At what point does being prepared go overboard

There is no reason to turn a scuffle with an unarmed subject into a scuffle with an armed subject because everywhere he grabs you he comes up with a gun.

Very well said.

Everyone who drives slower than I do is an idiot.

Everyone who drives faster than I do is a maniac.

Everyone who drives differently than I do is a moron.

There, summed up the thread.

Heard the following quote last night on Personal
Defense TV ....

"You cannot purchase proficiency."

the sheer number of tools isn't as important as what
the user can do with them within various circumstances

certainly something I need to be reminded of and
continue to work on being more proficient.

Cremon, apparently you are or were "the man" as you understand exactly what I'm talking about. Around here we're also referred to as 99s or tro (short for metro) 99 started before my time so I'm not sure of the origin.

I've got to go meet with some long time buddies in a month or two

actually play poker all night... and I was thinking about seeing how many handguns & knives I could conceal on my person just to entertain them at some time...

I've come up with a minimum of 8 handguns and 4 knives so far.

Six pages of talk about rights. And on the web, in the media, a lot more...but few bring up the responsibilities of being a citizen. If you want the rights...demand the rights...feel you're entitled to the rights; then be ready to shoulder the responsibilities of citizenship:

Obey the laws, challenge those you disagree with; in the voting booth and public forums.
Teach your children...demand that the schools do likewise...and volunteer your time to make it so.
Spend your time and wealth in the pubic good. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H.
Treat your fellow citizens with respect.
Honor your veterans, your police and fire personnel, their families, their widows and orphans.
Study your government, its employees, it's legislative efforts, its judges.
Vote on all of it; then accept the results, and work to change those results with which you disagree.
B----hing does nothing, my friends, get off the couch and participate. Others have paid for your "Rights", it's time for you to anty up as well.

Blume357 - Don't forget the knife hung down the back of your neck! :D

I have a buddy who carries, in his car, a military back pack, crammed full of ammunition (9mm), three large ammo cans full of ammunition, four pistols, two carbines (all 9mm), a rifle (.308 I believe) and a 12 gauge shotgun with at least 100 rounds.

He has a gun in almost every room in his apartment and the Good Lord only knows what he is carrying on a daily basis.

I keep telling him he is an accident waiting to happen. What happens if he gets his car stolen while it is at work? He has been involved in three attempted carjackings in four months, but thwarted them when he showed one of his pistols.

He has some concerns about some people he use to work with and an organization he was a member of (Not government) in which he exposed a lot of misconduct and let it be known that the money these people "donated" was being used for other than it's intended purpose. (It caused the 'company' to eventually fall apart and cost some of its leaders millions of dollars and jail time for some of them.)

He occasionally still gets death threats in the mail delivered to his apartment building, despite using a P.O. Box and moves about every six months.

I do not know where the line between paranoia and self-defense is drawn, but I feel he is close to it. He does not. It is his life he is concerned with. He probably is capable of using most of these weapons very proficiently, but not all at once.

When you have a trauma plate in the back of your vest so you can take hits from a .270 while lying on top of your partner...........
Sorry. I couldn't resist.:p

Can you say "over-kill"? Wow how does he move around with all that hardware? IMO one gun and one folding knife should be plenty. Practice enough with your weapon to be proficient and confident and I don't think you'll be likely to go the three gun, light saber route...

Sounds like certified 180 Proof Mall Ninja. :o

Ever notice how most Mall Ninjas are also in terrible shape? As in they throw 3 punches and they're winded? No wonder they feel so inadequate, most of them probably couldn't take out the average teenage school boy in a man to man fight.

Avoiding seedy areas and having Situational Awareness when you have no choice would be more valuable than the extra mags. :o

Don't hate on us gamers! I love video games like Modern Warfare 2 but my EDC is usually just a pocket knife and either my 1911 or Glock 17 since I sold my PM-9, I have a J frame .38 but it is my fathers that he more or less handed down to me so I don't carry it. Been looking for a nice HK - P7 to get refinished and slim down my carry load. No reloads either.

Well I mean those are on the days I'm not carrying the sniper rifle with a thermal scope and a Glock 18 suppressed of course!:D

I think most people who aren't LEO's don't even need to carry a BUG, let alone two. I could see having a gun in the car and one on your body if anything.

Not to defend those who spend their nights playing video games, but the gunner on an M1 tank very nearly is doing little more on operations (other than helping to maintain the tank). He sits in the basement of the tank, in a manner of speaking, with no windows and connected to the rest of the crew electronically; he sights his target with the closest thing to a video game the army has. Moreover, the crew is unlikely to be carrying pistols anymore but most likely has a multi-tool. And he's the only one who doesn't get to ride with his head sticking out of the tank. Not a bad job, all in all.

Well, clearly it's too much when you have your wife sewing in another pocket to your plate carrier so you can have two strike plates on your front and back, and then duct-taping a third on so you have a better chance of surviving multiple .338 rounds to the chest.

any time survival or prep etc comes up i think of mel tappan. i used to buy into all his monthly articles in guns and ammo. all the dough he spent lol. he died of natural causes in his eighties. we should be all so lucky. fwiw, bobn

You guys are all wrong. The OP's friend has the right idea. One gun (polished nickel with pearl handles) is for show - "this man is one mean dude". The other gun is all business - Glock .45 - it's a killing machine. The third gun is just in case is in case you run up on a gang of 10 - you will need to do some dual-handed shooting. The knives are cutting tools, that's all. And, the baton is to keep your friends in line.:D

Seriously, anything more than one gun and one magazine is "too much" in my opinion. I've got 20 rounds of 9mm in my Glock. What the heck am I going to need more rounds than that for? If I found myself in the middle of a Katrina-type natural disaster, I would carry one pistol, perhaps an extra magazine and maybe a very compact carbine or "assault" pistol.....maybe.

I carry an M&P9 full size. I don't even carry a spare magazine with me. Once in a while I will carry a Smith 442 in addition, but rarely. That being said it sounds like overkill to me too. I would however prefer not to step onto that slippery slope and say it to loudly. I would hate to find myself in a situation where public perception dictated what was acceptable and excessive in regards to my choices.

I fail to see any reason to question or second guess what any other person carries, or does not carry.

None of us are so omniscient that we can pass judgment on another's carry habits.
