Are 1911s just a fad?

Scott, I believe the wheel is a great example of an item that's been a fad longer than the 1911. The wheel will be replaced any day now, as soon as the patents for its replacement can be worked out.

Yes, in 200 years nobody will seriously consider a 1911 for CCW. Most will be only kept as antiques. Although some 1911s may be used at soldier/Marine action shooting competitions. ;)

Oh yeah, sure, just like that newfangled 98 Mauser thing... ... probably never catch on. ;) :p

Now the pointy stick or a good thowing size rock, well now that's a well accecpted and fully developed weapon system! :)
Maybe, just maybe even more reliable than that 1911 thing.:D

They were with me. I think I'm finally over my fascination with this relic. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the greatest designs of all time. But, IMO, it's better left in the Smithsonian. It's a little like this. Every now and then, I get this urge to ditch my late model vehicle( I won't say what it is, as to not start another arguement) and get me some old classic. Of course, for nostalgic reasons! Then, my better judgement takes over and I remember why they don't make them like they used too. Technological advancements!
Same reason we don't use sling-shots and black-jacks anymore. By the way, to me, technological advancements don't mean beavertail grip safeties or front slide serrations. It's other things. But, it's all about personal preference. Go with what you are comfortable with, whatever the reason might be. It's going to be fun to see who this rattles!

By the way, I'm not trying to suggest that the only advancements in the new 1911s are beavertails and slide serrations, I just used those as examples. Lest anyone think I'm oblivious to what is out there.

Trigger ensures 1911 popularity

Fad? No. Perfect?--Not by a long shot. But until somebody makes a really exceptional DA/SA pistol with a short reset and clean break, shooters will always be tempted by the 1911 family.

Just spent the afternoon at the range. Put about 300 rounds through through a Glock 34. Rested, I could put 5 rounds in an inch at 12 yards. But, offhand that $@#! trigger is just really hard to master. I love my glock... simplicity, durability, reliability, but I have to say I shoot better with just about everything I own... Sigs, HKs, revolvers, you name it. With the Glock I have to really, really concentrate to keep the shots in the black.

At the end of the session I kept thinking how much better I could have shot with a 1911, even though the potential accuracy of the Glock is very good.

HK--bring out the p7 in .45. Then there may be a real reason to call the 1911 an antique.

Of Course this MUST be a "troll"..

As this pistol has been around for well over 80 years, and still garners new enthusiasts every year (me included, having just acquired a Kimber Pro Carry)..certainly YOU must

a) ignorant

b) Joking

c) Just wanted a ton of replies...

Technological advancement? Okay, how to you improve on the first shot and repeat hit potential of a 1911? By using a gun with a spongy plastic trigger? Or better yet an expensive German one with a gritty 12-pound DA trigger?

Some guns are simply designed to be carried. And then others are designed to be carried into Dark Places. Guess which one the 1911 is.

GlocknSpiel,

If you'd read Ellery Holt's (the thread originator) post on p.2 of this thread, you'd realizie that your choice (b) was the correct one. ;)

So I'm thinking they're just a passing fad
IMHO, I would have to agree. From 1911 to around 1984(?) (73 years), as the official sidearm, it cannot be considered a fad, since it was THE standard. After Beretta replaced the 1911, it became one- a fad that has lasted 17 years and still going... A collector's must have, a classic.

Again, JMHO

This is an easy subject to get people riled up. I think I might say something outlandish like, 1911 fanatics are like cultists, worshipping their pagen god. Bow down to your god!

Interesting that the slide is about the same proportionally as the 9mm version. The .40 version has a slide that is very tall. Frankenstien's forehead tall and distorted looking.
Oh, the .45 version is only worth 10Kbecause it was never in production. I would guess they would be priced around 2K if they had a regular run.
