Ya' know, I sure see a lot of model 1911 style pistols for sale... So I'm thinking they're just a passing fad. Anyone agree?

:D :D :D

Ellery,

M1911s may be a fad but they are the longest lasting fad we will ever see. Some will always believe a bigger caliber is better and M1911s have a place in history. M1911s should be in museums so more people can appreciate them.

Fads are things which do not last-me thinks you may be confusing fads with classics, and the 1911 is deservedly so. There has been a great improvement in ammunition and double action weapon systems, but when it all comes down to it, the 1911 is a very competitive design even today. The trigger pull is or can cheaply be made to be something a lot of newer designs have a tough time following, and I find nothing out there which combines the concealability and power that 1911's are capable of. The accuracy is there, and the design is timeless. I might see the demise of the 1911 design in my lifetime, but I doubt it.

Ellery, as a newbie, I thought the same thing there for a while, until I started shooting one, and appreciating their design elegance. Browning understood the concept of 'ergonomics' before that term became a fad.

Fads don't last almost 100 years, and keep on tickin'. Other guns have come and gone, but the 1911 has withstood the test of time. The reason you see more of the 1911s for sale is almost certianly because it's proportional to their popularity, not because it's a bad gun.

Ellery,

WAAAAAAHHHHHHH! I'm going to hold my breath and pound my feet till you remove your heinous post. And no, they are not a fad. Last time I qualified my Kimber outshot the Glock 21 next to me on each course of fire. But that Glock sure held a lot of bullets for second trys!

If it's a fad, other gun designs wish they could be as lucky.. I wonder if any of the Beretta, Glock, Sig or HK designs will be around for nearly a 100 years and still hold the popularity the 1911 design has enjoyed over the decades...

A mere 100 year run of unbroken production, distribution and sale by dozens of different manufactures world wide.

Hum …

I am trying to think of another item that represents so well what a fad is not.

Nope, not a fad. Fads come and go, never to be heard from again. The 1911 has come, stayed and made itself comfortable. It has set standards by which other manufacturers have tried to improve.
Nice way to get everyone's attention though

I believe the poster is just providing a satire of the "Is Glock Just A Fad" topic. It's just a just a joke.:p

maybe it is a fad, you know how fashion is cyclical, maybe guns do that same thing. Maybe we as 1911 owners and gun nuts don't want to believe the fact that there were times between 1911 and today when our beloved sidearm was the bane of the gun world, but then again maybe i am just trying to get myself in trouble here.

1911 is definately not a fad, but if you think that it is and want to get rid of your 1911 let me know

Are 1911s just a fad?

That is a simple question and gets a simple answer. NO.

Think of it this way. If they where just a fad then why have they been around for so long? And more importantly why will they stay around forever?

John

I don't know about it being a simple question, but it sure is a stupid question!!! Obvious lack of knowledge on firearms HISTORY!!! The 1911 is not a fad, nor is the Glock a fad. They are both superb firearms designs that made a difference in the way people use, carry, and perceive handguns. A fad that I can think of to use as an example would be the 10mm's use in law enforcement. Very short lived and only spurred by the decisions of a certain federal agency. Notice, that I am not condemning the cartridge, just its use in history.

To say the 1911 is a FAD is just like saying the Mormon Church is a CULT.
To say either one within arms reach of Kodiac is a surefire way of getting your arse handed to you.

The 1911 .45 was developed in the war the US was in involving the Phillipines because the standard issue revolvers could not stop charging Philipinos (who were wielding machetes) from arriving at the shooter and hacking him pretty good. At least, that's the story the history books tell. So, they wanted a small cannon with a big hit. In the process, they accidentally developed the best auto ever made. It has been refined (but basically changed little) since then. The big plus is that because there is so much demand for 1911's, manufacturing advances give the buyer a gun with fit and quality that far exceeds other auto pistols of similar price. Compare the fit on a Kimber Classic to your basic Glock or Beretta.

Mr. Holt uses three "big grins" [:D] and more than half of the responders don't get it.

You guys sure are a serious bunch.
