Anyone else dislike .270 Win & .300 Magnums??

I don't hate any calibers, I may not have any use for certain ones (7.62X39 comes to mind), but I don't hate it.

No the 270 is a differant soldier altogether, It in a Model 70 is an American Icon but then there are those out there that don't like Apple Pie too.

The 270 is my elk caliber (in a Model 70 of course). Don't hunt with a 300 WM but I do use it on my 1000 yard any rifle and sight and any rifle iron sights (again a Model 70).

I can see one not having a use for one or the other, or both, but to hate is silly.

Don't be concerned.
This is America, you can openly
dislike or love what ever you want.
(for no reason at all)

I just hate people from Kodiak, Alaska I dont even know why they just irritate the **** out of me........................lol J/K.............

To each his own!!!!!!

I own and regularly shoot .270 win and .30-06. The former is a Weatherby vanguard and the latter a T/C venture. I have killed deer with both and keeping them both sighted for 200 yds wouldn't hesitate to take a 300 yd shot if one ever presented itself in the Missouri deer haunts I hunt.

I shot a 300 Weatherby mag once. Don't care to ever do that again. The only case of scope bite I have ever had in 50 some years of shooting. Since I don't have a need to take 1000 yd shots and will probably most likely never get to hunt a grizzly or brown bear, I have no need for the cartridge. Oh, if I ever did get to hunt the dangerous bears, I would probably look for a .375 H & H. That is what my ph in Africa uses for their big 5.

But, as I said, to each his own:D

P.S. Except for the "Big 5" the most used calibers in Africa are .270 Win and .30-06:)

While I am at it, the 7mm-08 has been widely praised, and for the life of me, I can't see it being as good as the 270 win. Probably a great caliber, but how is it any better than a 270? Some writers and some gun owners talk like the 7mm-08 is the best thing since rolled toilet paper.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that the 7mm-08 can do everything the .270 can do but it does it in a smaller package and less recoil and if you want you can even use it in competition target shooting.

Longdayjake

See what I mean? You are right. The 7mm-08 is about like the 270, only in your opinion a bit better. There are probably a dozen calibers that are very similar, and depending on what you like, any one of them may be better than all the others. :D Ain't it great?

I personally love the .270. My favorite hunting cartridge.

What he said.

Maybe my fondness for the cartridge is because it is what my first high-powered rifle was chambered in, or because it has always gotten the job done, or because I don't like belted cases and large amounts of unnecessary recoil. My Model 70 in .270 Win is still my go to gun after 20 years of hunting big game, even though I also use my .30-06, .30-30, 7.62x54R, .22 Hornet, and .358 Winchester. The .270 goes with on every trip, regardless of which of other rifles go, or are designated as the primary rifle for that hunt......because I know it will get the job done.

In school a .270 once punched me and took my lunch money, then gave it to his friend
.300 MAGNUM....they both laughed. 3o years later I ran into them again.
Both worked at pay-less shoes. I laughed.

they took my blackberry, my lunch money, and threw me in the dumpster behind the store.

Ohh, how I love my .270 Win. Course, she was my "first", I guess; I had been hunting with a sporterized 98K with see-thru mounts and a "30-30" scope reticle that looked like a pair of binos or a 1950's TV screen.

I bought a Spanish Mauser 98k, had the "Mauser hump" ground off, the "ears" for stripper clips removed, target barrel attached, Timney trigger installed, bolt bent, ground, and welded, trigger guard re-worked, scope mounts drilled & tapped and custom cut for the receiver, and a walnut stock blank inletted and custom made for me.

About 1000 1989 dollars later, I was a happy 15 year old, can't say so much for my Dad...:p

So, yeah, I like .270win.

WOW...

I did not expect to get this many responses in 24 hours. I'll do my best to respond to the posts that stick out to me...

Can you tell I'm not a .270 fan? Why? I get sick of a bunch of guys pushing a caliber on people that really isn't all that fantastic. You see it at gun shops, you see it on the internet, and you see it at the range -someone claiming that the .270 is the best round in the world. The .270 can kill as well as most hunting rounds, but it really doesn't do anything that special. It gets way more hype than it deserves.
Hmmm... I hear ya! It might be that I dislike the "hype" surrounding the .270 Win more so than the actual cartridge itself....

Since you are sharing your opinion on what you don't like.. Tell us what calibers tickle your fancy and why?
Okay, here's a couple.
.260 Rem is my favorite centerfire and the only one I have used for big game hunting in quite some time. It is my ultimiate hunting rifle. Does everything I'd ever need in a medium-big game hunting rifle in a really small package.
I like the .25/06 Rem, but it doesn't really do anything I can't accomplish with a .243 or .260...
I like the .35 Whelen, but if the .350 Rem Mag didn't have that silly belted case then i'd like it more than the Whelen.

Seriously, I am looking hard at getting a .260 Remmy ..... hopefully in a model 7, though I'd love to take Ruger's new Scout Rifle and re-barrel it to .260 with a 20 inch barrel threaded for a can...... What? I can dream can't I?
Now THAT's a Ruger I'd spend money on!!!

.300 Weatherby Mag said:
If I hated the .300 mags, I would not have one for my handle
The .300 Weatherby mag is the one that I specifically dislike the most out of the entire .300 Mag spectrum. Had one once, will never ever ever again. That thing was brutal.

I guess the real issue for me is the hype surrounding the .270 Win, which I could've been a little more clear about in my OP. Lots of good responses here and it's been interesting. I just can't stand the following conversation:

NewGuy: I'm looking for a deer hunting rifle.
OldTimer: Here, this is a .270 Win, the greatest cartridge ever to be created. Jack O'Connor even said so, you see. So there's no need in looking at any of the other cartridges which are more efficient, equally powerful, and come in rifles that weigh over 1lb less.
NewGuy; Oh, ok. Thanks for your help Mister! Now I have a .270 Win, the greatest cartridge in the world, and some fella named Connor said so.

It bugs me that the .270 Win gets the nod from the whole world, to the neglect and demise of many cartridges that are either equal to it or superior in just about every way.

And I never said I wasn't crazy...;)

I'm a big fan of the .284 diameter bullet and don't feel one way or the other about the .270 or the .300. I actually owned a .270 for about 5 minutes before trading it for something else.

jgcoastie quote: .260 is my favorite centerfire and the only one I have used for hunting for some time. It's my ultimate hunting rifle. Does everything I'd need in a medium-big game hunting rifle in a small package.:rolleyes: Well that pretty well sums it up don't it?;) Your .260 is just the "LADIES" version of the "worlds greatest cartridge" the .270 win. !!!:D:p

The 270 win was also my first proper centerfire (besides a 222 rem). It was around 1988 and I was 13. I was going mostly pig hunting just about every weekend with my sisters boyfriend and I saved for ever to get enough money to go to the gun shop and get me a proper hunting rifle. Went in one thursday afternoon and was going out west hunting for two weeks hunting the next day anyway I wanted to get a 243 or 308 but the guy behind the counter told me the 270 was the only gun I would ever need and would kill just about everything I pointed it at so I walked out with a nice blued/synthetic Parker Hale in 270win with 200 rounds of PMC 130 grain Barnes X bullet ammo. I wasn't that impressed with it and didnt keep it long, I think I swapped it for a Remington 30-06.

I don't miss the 270 at all and I can understand what you are saying I don't hate the 270 but I do think it is one of the most overated rounds ever, the way some people have talked about the 270 you would think it was some sort of magic round and I am with you I think the 260 rem is one of the most underated rounds, IMO it is a real goer. Just look at the range of bullets you get with the 6.5mm (.264) and the superior S/D and B/C compaired with the .270 (.277) range, S/D and B/C. I have wondered how popular the 270 would have been if the 280rem was around 20 years earlier and Jack O'Connor talked it up like he did the 270.

Now the 300 wm I am not a big fan of it like someone said give me a 30-06 and if I ever did own a 300 mag I would probably try it in a short action (300wsm) but for here in Australia for me the 308win does pretty well and I have taken a number of Brumbies (Feral Horses), Scrub Bulls (Feral Cattle), Camels, Donkeys, to many pigs and goats to count all with the 308win. Someone said "you should see the damage on pigs I get with the 300wm it almost cuts them in half" well believe it or not I get the same damage with the 308 using 150 grain SP. If I need anything bigger (for Water Buffalo) I would probaby get a 338wm or I have my fathers 375 H&H mag. Although I have never really considered it a big game cartridge I know alot of guy's taking Water Buffalo with the 45-70 loaded pretty hot with Woodleigh 400 plus grain big game bullets.

Kind of like it myself.

3 shots at 100 yards as fast as I could shoot them. Wouldn't want to do that very often but shooting slowly and carefully I get similar groups at 200 yards. Love my Weatherby. It could be your gun didn't fit you, stock fit is important with a thumper and if it don't fit even a .308 can make your teeth hurt.

I love the .270 Win, it was Americas first Magnum performing cartridge even if it doesn't say it in the name. 3100+ fps was amazing for any cartridge in 1925. The .270 Win was my first dedicated elk rifle, and it has done a fine job of bringing home the meat on pronghorn, deer, and elk.

As far as .300 Magnums go I'm not too fond of them as well. However I do own a .300 H&H Magnum and that is just a cool old cartridge. It will probably be the only .30 caliber magnum I'll ever own as I tend to not like many magnum cartridges as well from a reloaders economic stand point.

I don't like to many cartridges that I can't get at least 800 loads out of 8lbs of powder. However I wouldn't turn down a grand old .375 H&H and I love my .375 Ruger as well. If I ever go above a .375 bore then 70+ grains of powder is the norm for most modern cartridges.

I have the .25-06, original .260 the 6.5x55, and .35 Whelen as well. I love those cartridges as well. The bullet diameter I seem to like the least is the 7mm. I've got a 7mm-08 and have owned a .280 and 7mm Rem Mag, and I just can't drink that Koolaid. I especially love the .280 AI owners and how superior their round is to the .280 and .270 and how it nearly bests the 7mm RM.
