I know... You're all :eek::rolleyes::mad: and stuff...

But I just can't get over how much I despise the .270 Win. No, I've never had any type of traumatic experiences with it, nor did the .270 I had many years ago ever fail for me...

I have no idea why, but in my mind I have vehemently decided against ever buying a .270 Win. Ever.

I have no problem with my MkII BARs in .30/06 & .25/06. Love my A-Bolt in .25/06. I'm actually planing on building a 6.5/06, so I definately don't have a problem with this family of cartridges... But I think I actually hate the .270 Win.

I have no idea why??? Maybe because I've fallen in love with the .260 Rem? But that doesn't make sense because I like just about every other cartridge. the only cartridge I despise more than the .270 Win are .300 magnums. All of them, any .308 caliber that ends in "Magnum", I immediately dislike...

Maybe I'm just weird??? Thoughts?

Interesting rant. Not even sure where to begin.

I've never been a big fan of the .270 Winchester, but I have to admit that it's a very useful cartridge. Those folks I hunt with, who use the .270, seem to like it well enough, and Lord knows, the gun writers seem to like it. I've just never seen the mystique that seems to surround the cartridge.

Likewise, I've never been a fan of the .300 Magnum, of any flavor. Maybe because I don't personally need the extra power it provides. My -06 gives me all the power I can use in my limited hunting venues and without the added recoil that comes from the magnum. There are those who love the magnums and the .270, and I've got no problem with that. If it works for them, so much the better.

I'm sure that if I were hunting Africa, I'd have a magnum in hand. Perhaps if I were hunting elk in the mountain west I'd have a magnum. Maybe not.

But hate them? No. I can't hate an inanimate object.

"Hate", "despise", vehemently against".....strong words.

They're only cartridges you "weirdo". It's like saying "I don't like to eat fish". You still eat other foods just like you still shoot other cartridges so not liking a certain caliber sounds normal to me.

I don't despise the 270, I just have no use or interest in it. I only use the 300 mag when I'm shooting past 1000 yards, otherwise it's the 30-06 or the 284. I get a good clang on the steel at 1000 with those.

You like what you like and we are all different.

I've got no great love for the .270 or the 30.06 although they are two great cartridges. I prefer the .308 and 7mm Rem Mag although neither of them can really do any thing that the first two can't.

Some like Pepsi, some like Coke.
However, I fail to see how a cartridge as well rounded, if not "stellar", as the . 270 could inspire "hate"...
Interesting.

it all boils down to personal preference really, so to say you 'hate' a cartridge just because makes no sense to me. I have a .270 win and the reason I chose this cartridge is because it suits the type of hunting I want to do, nothing more. I have no interest in magnum cartridges but I can see their usefulness in hunting - a .300 win mag would make a great elk hunting cartridge and should I ever get to go elk hunting i'd love to own one

I sure appreciate the reason for this post. Without this kind of logic, we'd be a lost bunch of inquiring minds. Thanks for posting such a wonderful forum question/opinion.

My next rifle will more than likely be a .270----love em.

.300 mag?---not so much---the .300's have the most wicked recoil of any gun I've owned or shot----I'll never own another one---even my .338 was never that bad.

I broke my nose shooting a .300 Win Mag. And the Remington it was chambered for was inaccruate as all get out.
My conclusion, don't get a .300 Win Mag unless you've got a precision built Rifle meant for 1,000 yards or more. Otherwise stick with the .308, 30-06 or something along those lines.

270 shoots good, but I am a paper puncher and don't need more recoil than a 308. Don't need 308 recoil but I am living with it.

300 Win Mags: Ouch! Too much recoil and it is a belted cartridge.

I really dislike belted magnum cartridges. Headspace is controlled at the belt, the base to shoulder position is not standardized, unless you buy special cartridge case head space gages (Sinclair sells Wilson versions) and set your die for that particular rifle, then your case life sucks because you are always oversizing. And then you have to segregate brass by rifle.

And belted magnums jam. I have had the belt on the top cartridge jam on the rim of the next cartridge. Had to take my thumb and push down on the cartridge stack to clear the interference. I am glad nothing more dangerous than a paper target was in front of me.

I consider belted magnums in the same category as drum brakes. A technology that had its day, and the sooner it is gone, the better life will be.

Some people don’t like ANY guns and for the same lack of reasons. Some have no guns, and have not ever had a bad experience with any guns, but hate them anyway.
We usually call them liberals or progressives.

But they are just people who have no grasp of logic, and that lack of logic is not even considered by them.
They just don’t like guns. They HATE guns.

At least you have only a small percentage of that condition going on within yourself.
:D

once again, making inflammatory comments that have no basis in fact don't belong here. I'm a liberal/progressive and I LOVE guns, so I guess that means you have no grasp of logic by making generalizations against those who don't share your opinions. believe me when I tell you, that are a lot of us Lefties that own guns, love guns and believe in the 2nd Amendment. leave your conservative bias at home where it belongs

*sigh*

Folks, there's a reason that the old Legal & Political forum was replaced with Legal & Civil Rights, and Political was tossed out the window. Take a wander through that old forum and you'll see why, but make sure you have your hip boots on ;).

Let's keep the politics out of this.... please!

Maybe I'm just weird???

I think U hit the nail on the head..................

If the 270 was a brand new cartridge today..It would be an instant hit.......
U say..U like the 30-06 and 25-06.......This cartridge is actually falls right in between the 2.........so..uh..refer back to quoted statement.......:D

Um nope. There are so many other cartridges out there that can do what the .270 can do without such a long casing. The .270 was nice when it came out because bullet construction wasn't what it is today and there weren't as many "flat shooting" rounds out there as we have today. The .270 is what it is because someone's grandpa had one and killed a bunch of deer with it, so his dad bought one and killed a bunch of deer with it, so all his kids bought one and killed a bunch of deer with them, and then all of his kids kids bought one and talk about how awesome .270 is on the internet even though they have no real world experience with it.

Can you tell I'm not a .270 fan? Why? I get sick of a bunch of guys pushing a caliber on people that really isn't all that fantastic. You see it at gun shops, you see it on the internet, and you see it at the range -someone claiming that the .270 is the best round in the world. The .270 can kill as well as most hunting rounds, but it really doesn't do anything that special. It gets way more hype than it deserves.

As far as the .300 wm goes, if you want something that is going to beat the heck out of you, you might as well buy a .338 and take advantage of some higher bc bullets.

Being a "caliber collector" I just had to have a 300 Win.Mag. Let me tell you I have never had so much fun shooting feral hogs as I have with this gun/caliber!

None of my other guns have ever put as much devastation into a pig as that 300 does. I've shot hundreds of pigs through the years with most every available caliber and there is NO OTHER caliber that can do the damage that my 300 does. I'm talking cutting 150+ lb. pigs in HALF! I've shot smaller hogs (head shots) and physically separated their head from the rest of their bodies.

You might not like 300's, or 270's, but part of that could be that you just have not found a good use for them yet. I'd never shoot a deer with my 300.. But everytime I go for hogs-that is the ONLY gun, and the ONLY caliber I'll be using.

Since you are sharing your opinion on what you don't like.. Tell us what calibers tickle your fancy and why?

I think you hit the nail on the head. different cartridges serve different purposes. I would never use a .300 win mag on a deer but I wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk or moose. different strokes for different folks
