a reminder about why we shouldn't forget to carry!!!

The dog in this case is secondary.

I do not understand why your LE friend did not arrest this guy on the spot.

In WA State, what the shotgunner did when he pointed the shotgun at the dog is known as brandishing. When he pointed it at YOU, he crossed a BIG line into felony territory.

He committed Assault in the First Degree with a firearm. This is (in WA) a Class A felony, and carries some serious jail time.

I encourage you to press charges.

Pointing the gun at the dog may have been justified if he thought it was some stray attacking his dog. However, pointing the gun at humans in this situation was WAY out of line and there really is no justifying it. Even if the dog should have been on the leash why the heck would you point it at the people??? Its crazy to argue that his actions toward the people were justified.

It's easy to point a shot gun at anything.... heck if the guy knew it was unloaded

then he might have been using it just like most folks would have a walking stick to get the dog to back up....

all dogs must be kept on a leash... yep, we need to keep those hunting dogs close.

My personal observation is a lot of dogs act totally different when on a leash than when running free. Most dogs when free if they meet another dog will work it out pretty quickly.

But then it's obvious to me that some folks in this discussion don't like dogs.
I have to go to people's homes every day and often deal with their dogs... I discovered the best way to make a dog your friend for life is let them lick you in the face.

I think somefolks don't understand that in someplaces it's not unusual for a person to appear with a gun. I arrived at a house last week early for an appointment and was standing on the front porch waiting to see if someone would come to the door after I knocked... even though I was pretty sure there was no one inside (after 25 years of doing this you can tell)... something moves over to my left... there is a guy standing there with a rifle.... didn't faze me a bit. Why?, because I wasn't doing anything wrong, of course him being dressed all in woodland cammo and it being about 10 in the a.m. had a little to do with it. :-)

A LEO as a witness is always nice as well. Idiotic hunters who endanger others seem to multiply like rabbits every year, and legally removing one from the herd would be a benefit IMO.

And maybe we should remove all the Idiotic gun owners; idiotic drivers; idiotic cell phone users; idiotic __________; or maybe we should think before making IDIOTIC statements,,,,,ya think????????? :( :(

Now to the situation,,,,it seems that you ALL have forgotten the FIRST rule of firearms,,,,A GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED!!!!!

When your dog comes on my hunting dog in an agressive manner,,,,you can bet your bottom dollar baby that I am going to assess your dog's mannerisms IMMEDIATELY and I WILL act accordingly,,,,control your dog as I control mine and there will not be a problem!!!!

Mr. Shotgun as he is being referred to seems to be completely in the wrong,,,,I don't think so. You have 3 people screaming and yelling at me,,,,also figuring the LEO (I assume he is not in uniform) is like many of them, built like a tank,,,,I may have just been in fear for my life,,,,3 against 1 kind of puts me in this mindset,,,,did you ever think about that?????

As far as carrying,,,,when the wife and I walk the dogs,,,,on a leash,,,,through our neighborhood,,,,I have mine for dogs, hogs or what ever MIGHT be encountered!!!! In my motorcycle realm we have a saying, "ATGATT"; All The Gear All The Time,,,,you don't plan the time when you are going to have a wreck any more than you can "plan" when you will "need" your gun,,,,if you could you would avoid that time.

It's NOT a question of not liking dogs.
I love dogs and own several. It's a question of doing the right thing and that is keeping your dog on a leash because: 1) it's the law--at least everywhere I have lived, 2) it's showing consideration for anyone who may meet your dogs---most people would not like my two Rottweilers to come running up to them unleashed---most people avoid them like the plague when they are on the leash---they're afraid, and even though I know it is unjustified, I RESPECT them and their fear and keep my dogs leashed.
3) leashing my dogs PROTECTS them and myself---leashing your dog is just a part of responsible ownership.
4) My insurance is high enough already, if I let my dogs run free and something does happen---it's going to be expensive for me all the way around.

PLEASE, PLEASE!! don't ever let a strange dog lick you in the face--don't ever put yourself or a dog in that position.
That is a true recipe for disaster.
Some dogs are "fear" biters and leaning over them etc. can cause them to bite and they often times don't give warnings they just bite.
Some dogs are dominant and don't like to be touched on the head or have a stranger in such close proximity to their face and WILL bite.
My male Rottie is such a dog ---very friendly and outgoing but doesn't like strangers to touch his head or try to hug him---that's for family in his mind.

Letting a strange dog lick your face goes against everything I ever learned or witnessed in dog training.

I think that all the juicy firearm goodness has gone out of this thread. When I squeezed it to see if any was left all that came out was a few drops of dog saliva...
