Just a little story, it happened to me last sunday.
My wife and my kids went for breakfast at a fellow LE friend. After the breakfast we all went for a walk in the country, a normal sunday where you go with your dog in the backcountry.
We were walking, none of us had a pistol, nobody thought a walk in the country a sunday morning with our dog could be a risky trip.
The dog of my friend suddenly ran after another dog and then showed up a hunter. The man pointed his shotgun at the dog and we ordered him to stop, there was no danger the dog were just playing, then the man pointed his shotgun at us! My buddy went directly against him and told him to point it down and the hunter recognized him as Police Officer. He then changed from agressive to sorry and opened the shotgun to show us that his gun was empty. he apoligized and said he acted like a fool.
Not a dramatic ending, but believe me this reminded me to ALLWAYS carry, even for trips looking "safe and innocent".

That's amazing. If you were carrying, that guy would probably be lying died next to his empty shotgun.

Yikes.

I don't go anywhere unarmed. Hell, I take a gun when I run my dogs in my own back field, you never know what might happen!

Seems to me your scenario presents a pretty good argument AGAINST carrying. If you had been carrying, the outcome might well have been tragic had you pulled your handgun and had the shotgun been loaded. I'm not being critical of those who carry at all times, but trying to pull a handgun on a guy pointing a shotgun at you is a good way to get yourself killed.

Mother of God. So what would the alternative have been? Run away? Are you saying that in any situation where an adversary has a gun, you wouldn't also want a gun? We should only have a gun for those situations where the attacker doesn't have a gun?

Don't we carry guns for those situations where an attacker/aggressor also has a weapon, maybe even a gun?

Maybe I'm missing something in your post...

The guy had an unloaded shotgun. If he pointed it at you, and you are armed, and pull, he probably would drop it like a hot potato. End threat.

Yeah, maybe you are...

Like when someone points a shotgun at you, what good is a handgun in a holster or in your pocket? As I stated in my post, I'm not being critical of those who choose to carry, but I fail to see how being armed in this situation would have led to a better conclusion.

In the end, I'm very glad the situation diffused as it did for you, but I don't think the mere presence of a CCW would have worsened the situation. Pulling it at an inopportune time or otherwise using it inappropiately could have though. I'm always of the opinion that the option of using a gun is always a benefit. Knowing how and when to use one is an absolute necessity though.

I would probably pursue legal action if anyone purposely threatened me with a weapon. A LEO as a witness is always nice as well. Idiotic hunters who endanger others seem to multiply like rabbits every year, and legally removing one from the herd would be a benefit IMO.

I would hope that someone would/did explain to him that he was playing Russian roulette. Different day, different folks, his empty gun pointed at them... One day someone else will have their own chamber loaded.

Ignorance and stupidity are both not really very bias. Anyone can be one or both. At least with education ignorance is solvable. And hopefully he has learned from this episode, and will not make the same mistake twice.
