A Challenge to the 870 Express Bashers....

Rational discussion is good. :D

With the admission that this may be a little off-topic, I'll say that I have recently been experimenting with a Nova. There is a lot to like about this shotgun, although it has some limitations, too. One thing I'll agree with you about is that I immediately noticed what I'd describe as better gun mounting and fit. Those are personal tool/body "interface" issues, not QC issues. The Nova (and SuperNova) obviously don't have the kind of aftermarket support (among other things) that the 870 (or Mossberg) have. So...different strokes for different folks.

Jg, shooting an 870 may not ring your chimes, but plenty of us hear them pealing every shot.

'Quality Oriented"? A working life of maybe 250K rounds and 10 million happy owners make the 870 platform's quality legendary.

The Browning and Benelli pumps are good guns, but not better. Just different...

J,fit is crucial. I'd rather shoot a Maverick that fit than a Perazzi that didn't.

The Nova's a good shotgun. Time will tell if it's a great one....

Why, copdills? Few 870s have been worn out in one generation, or worn out period.

Two here are older than my spouse of 33 years.

Browning and Benelli shotguns fit me better; therefore, they are better... For me.

How a shotgun fits is one thing; how well they work is quite another-and, of course, how well the 870 Express functions (or not) is the the crux of this thread.

I know that they function reliably every time we qualify at the range with them. I don't enjoy shooting them, but they work.

This whole thread is kind of a red herring... Dave McC; you know that nobody will "take you up" on your offer.

All of this seems like a personal vendetta against people who don't like 870's for whatever reason; reliability, shootability, etc... I'm sorry we don't all "love" your favorite make/model of shotgun, but that's the benefit of having choices. We don't have to like your favorite brand.

And just because you hang out at the trap range in central MD doesn't mean that you have seen all the "unreliable" 870's... Ten different people could shoot the same gun and each have a different issue with function, fit, or shootability...

Sorry, JG, no vendettas here. Nor scarlet smelts.

I will admit to a delight in seeing people put up or shut up. When folks get on the Net and try to make what they SAY is a problem they had into a general condemnation of a tool, well, it doesn't sit well. And when that runs contrary to my personal experience, time to get the truth out.

And the truth is that most Express owners are quite happy with their shotguns.

I never expected to buy or fix a lot of shotguns when I cast down the gauntlet. I did expect to throw some light on the fact that a few vocal folks with bad experiences were sterotyping the Express and some new folks were thrown off by it.

TFL is for the dissemination of real info and data about guns and shooting, not the pulpiting of anyone's biases, including mine.

BTW, PGC is more than a trap range though there are about 6 trap ranges in use. There's also 4-5 skeet ranges,a wobble trap, an International trap range (One of the few in the US) and both 5 stand and Sporting Clays available. There's even a patterning board, that most essential but underused tool in the shotgunner's toolbox. Stop on by if you get in the area.

If you let me know ahead of time I'll bring an 870 for you to shoot. It may be an Express, more likely an WM, but on the firing line there's little difference.

Pun intended.....

There is a contradiction of sorts here. Most 870 will function reliably and that's precisely the point of this thread. Every manufacturer of any product will have a certain % of their product defective. That is the way of things. You have problems when that % rises above normal.

Yep, but threads on internet fora don't tell us anything at all about a manufacturer's reliability record, especially when the same people post over and over again. All we learn is that there are some very vocal and persistent people out there. :)

Have I had a ton of problems out of 870's? No, but they handle like pure garbage for me.

My problem with 870's is not one of function (as indicated in the quotes of myself above), but one of fit....

I still have a fishy smell about the origins/intent of this thread (sorry Dave), but I reckon that could be the halibut I cooked for supper...

I think complaining, in general ("whining"?) is in vogue. The more public, the better. Sometimes, the more embellished, the better. (Oops, did I say what I just said? :( )
