9mm or 40cal

So... I prefer 9mm because of cost, and because modern 9mm rounds have great stopping power for concealed carry.

I would, and sometimes do, trust my life to even a lowly .32 acp. A 9 mil would certainly be fine but as long as the difference in accuracy and follow up times is small, I prefer bigger and faster projectiles. The only exception being for pocket carry and night stand duties. .32 or .380 are the only real solutions to pocket carry. In my house I like a plain Jane big and slow .45.

Now for edc in a full size or compact pistol 9 is fine... but 10 is better (.40 if you need a smaller grip size)

The difference in cost between a 1,000 round case of 9mm and .40S&W is somewhere between $30 and $40. To me, that's just not significant enough to be a determining factor. Instead of going out to dinner with the family, eat at home just once and there's the difference.

I prefer the more manageable recoil of 9mm in polymer guns, so I mainly shoot 9mm. But if I preferred or trusted .40 instead, I sure wouldn't let the cost difference deter me.

I'm always going to shoot 9mm, I keep my P226 in .40S&W in case 9mm ammo becomes scarce on the shelves again. But I think the real comparison is between .40S&W and .45ACP and in that case, I'm always choosing the .45!

9mm
I have never shot .40 though.
I have mostly 9mm and .45

One of those mass shootings at school I think, the killer had a ruger .22 and yes he killed people with it.

9mm is plenty except if there was a bear in your house!

I own both. It's wise to own both. I prefer 180 grain JHP. The primary reason for the reemergence of the 9mm is first cost and second because we are a poltically correct world where everyone gets a trophy. If you can't handle a .40, you don't meet the physical requirements.

Right. I forgot that shooting a 40SW was the measure of a man. Guess I better get rid of my 357 magnums.

Wow. Why do people get in such a tizzy over caliber. People were stopping each other with .32 caliber black powder fairly effectively at one point. Tech changes people don't.

9mm gold dot fairly proven in the real world
.40 S&W gold dot......fairly proven in the real world
.45 gold dot ..... Fairly proven......
.38 +p gold dot ............
Do I need to run through the federal r Winchester offerings as well, hint ...... Fairly proven in .......

Point is all of them have pros and cons but those pros and cons largely fall into the statistical noise. Pick one, and as a much revered shotgunner once said BA/UU/R. OR buy ammo, use up, repeat.

Point is caliber is the most insignificant piece in a gunfight. The fight is the most significant piece. After that luck, skill, resolve and maybe reliability play a much larger role the a mm here or there.

I like .40 and .45. I have NO illusions of them being hugely superior to 9mm. In some minute ways they absolutely are but at the cost of capacity and recoil.

Hell they are all handgun rounds that pretty much suck in general.

My two cents. But I am not a leoswatteammembergsg9sealteam6boyscout nor did I sleep in a motel six. I have been around the block enough to know that .40 is a perfectly effective and proven round.......like .45.........like 9mm........like .38........like well you get the point. If you think a gun fight is about caliber I think you are paying too much attention to the word gun and not enough on the word fight.

High drag low speed internet commando signing of.

9mm is .45 set for stun or sum such crap. :p

Do you think a SEAL/SAS/ROYAL MARINE ETC. is more or less deadly with a SIG P226/HI Power/ Glock 19 vs a 1911/HK45c/Glock 22 etc.?

Hint it's a wash. Give them a broken Raven .25 and a rusty spoon and ........ Well again it's the fight not the gun.

I shoot for fun. I don't have illusions of martial combat. Hence I like pulling any trigger for fun and have been behind damn near all of them. If you told me hay here is a Glock 17 or Glock 22 or 1911 or HK USP or Or HK 45 or Smith 686 etc. etc and said you are going to war/need to use this for serious social reasons. None f them would matter I would BA(lots of it/UU/R and I would be hell n wheels with it. Run whatcha brung.

Sorry rant/sermon over.

I am just as much of a gun nut as everybody else and I have my "pet calibers" but when the rubber hits the road and t gets real none of them are Enough and all of them are enough and frankly the minute a bullet whizzes over my head nothing short of fire for effect or tac air danger close will seem like enough.

For a caliber war thread, this one trundled along pretty well for a while there. To all who participated, thank you for remaining civil. Still, I think this one is beginning to creep towards that seemingly inevitable end of all caliber war threads: the various sides screaming at each other.

Let's put this one to bed, until next time, on "Let's Pick a Round!"
