In order for it to be called hunting there's got to be some ethics and moral standing that the hunter holds on to. As a true hunter we always hope for the quickest and cleanest harvest possible. We respect the animal that we hunt, whether it be a deer or a rabbit, elk or squirrel. We never take shortcuts, or shoot whatever walks; we always obey daylight hours and respect nature and are big conservation advicates.
If you are a hunter, you would not use a sub-standard equipment that isn't a proven caliber capable of easy clean kills. I for the longest time wanted a .357 lever (even though I a bow hunting nut!), but have since decided on .44 or .45lc as they are more proven to cleanly harvest the whitetail deer than the .357 (very capable though with proper ammo still).
Now if you simply want to kill things, not hunt. Then yes 9mm is a great round to inflict pain upon a deer or similar to larger prey which would probably result in death, which may or may not be close and timely enough for you to successfully recover it.
Just my .02
