642 Club @ TFL

it's time to replace my grip screw with a stainless one. probably hex if the head isn't to tall, but every 4 days it gets rusty and i have to clean it off with a piece of denim.

New to the Firing Line

Hi I'm Dennis and I'm new to the Firing line. I spend time on a few hg forums.

Live on the Gulf coast side of FL and also spend a few months a year in E. TN.

I am new to handgunning but not guns. Grew up in a hunting family from MI.

I earned a CCW permit 6 months ago and about a year ago began a quest for the ultimate carry handgun. :p I am not particularly enamored with the KelTec although maybe someday when I can't afford a Rorbaugh I may pick up a P3 AT and put it through its paces.

Living in FL and the lifestyle I lead for business and leisure I prefer a pocket carry except perhaps during deep winters and hiking.

I started my quest with a BERSA BT 380. It is a bit to large and too heavy for the pocket. It has performed admirably and has become the "traveler" it goes in whatever vehicle I'm traveling in and has become an addition to whatever the carry de jour is.

Next I purchased a Kahr PM 9. I have had issues with it unfortunately. Seems like they are somewhat hit or miss. I like the caliber and format for carry well enough that I will work through its issues until it is right (just got back from its first trip home). In the interim to my lack of confidence with the PM I began looking at revolvers and read alot of articles and came upon the 642 Club (everything S&W snubby really) on THR. A great group of contributors and almost 500 members strong and over 3000 posts of mostly good information.

Hence I now have added a 642-2 to the lineup. I recently put a set of CT 405s on it. There is a great deal of discussion regarding the reliability and out of the box success with revolvers. The new 642 failed after 60 rounds and numerous dry fires and had to have its sear replaced. That event has given me the patience to get the PM to "perfect".

My wife was using the S&W 686 CS-1 3 inch while I travel but it's too much gun for her, so she now has the 642. I am about that far away from an M&P 340 when I find the right and reasonable buy. Losing a couple ounces over the 642 will be better yet. Would still use the .38 Speer 135 +Ps or COR BON 110 DPX.
Might try some Buffalo 158s they have developed for short barrels one of these days.

Holster wise the PM 9 and the 642 will ride nicely in a De Santis Nemesis interchangably. I just ordered a Mika round cut which is due in a week or two.
Robert Mika is slammed with orders due to the (renewed) interest in S&W wheelers for concealed carry. THR had a great deal to do with that.

Next on the buy list? Probably a S&W M&P 40c or the new Beretta PX4 Storm ultra compact might be worth a look see vs the S&W. It's hard to beat S&Ws warranty. Lock is optional on the new M&P SA. They are coming around slowly.

This post would be totally worthless without photos.

Carry duo that will both fit in the same DeSantis pocket holster nicely.

Best Regards.

Have 442 & 642 Now...

I bought a 442 today for warm weather, stylish, fashion, attire. My wife has a 642 that fits in my pocket just great but I didn't want one just like hers so I bought the black beauty. Can't wait to get to the range to try it out. The J frames aren't fun range guns but unbeatable as a ccw, especially in the hot summer.

I started with a 296 as my first revolver CCW - it requires BIG pockets!

I finally found a deal on a LNIB 642-2 and added it - here they are together - in and out of the R. Mikas holsters - great pair! Actually, the combination of gun & holster is easier to pocket!

J frames can be fun range guns if you shoot light target loads. I currently have 5 of them: 2 642s, 1 442, 1 60 & 1 36 (all of them pre-lock).

Excuse the poor pic - I bought this about 2 weeks ago & took the picture in a hotel bathroom with the available lighting & a digital point & shoot:

This is replacing my Colt Mustang PocketLite as a CCW piece (the little Colt is being awarded Safe Queen status!)

642

Can I join!?!?!? I picked up a brand new 642 two days and ago and haven't even shot it yet. I hope to get to the range this week.

Kevinch,
Have you been playing with your 642 in the bathroom again. You know, you can go blind doing that...

M&P 340 In the House

Swapped out the CT 405 grips to try some Hogue Monogrips on the new 340.

What a difference. Still conceals well and there is a whole lot more to hold on to. Those of you with large hands might want to give these a try on your 642/442. $13 and you can always return them if you don't like them. Pachmyar has their version as well.

Here are some pics.

In the DeSantis Nemesis
I think these grips improved the performance of this holster as it is a rather tight fit. The longer grip provides better leverage for breakout.

The ubiquitous Robert Mika round cut.

I had a pair of CT Laser grips on my 642 for a while. I liked the idea of the laser but the activation button never seemed to be in the right place for the way I held the grip. Finally put the CTs on a gun I was selling and went back to the boot grip.

Here's a pic of my only J frame...

one with Pachmyers, and one with factory grips.

I couldn't take the rusty grip screw anymore. I replaced it with a stainless hex screw. I guess the factory one is metric or Home Depot doesn't carry screws in 1/8" increments. The 3/4" inch screw was too short, and the 1", which i used, had to be dremelled down about 5 or 6 thread revolutions. The size is #8 head, 32 threads per inch i reckon.
