45 COLT: Please tell me what I am missing...

I just started loading 2400 that Scoville kinda hinted around about in Handloader a 270gr SWC gc for my Uberti and Lee's flat point at about 260 using the same amount of powder in each. The bullets were picked because of the different throat diameter for each shooter. Pretty snappy, not bad accuracy and very clean except for unburnt 2400 as usual. I'm also loading a grain more with the Lee bullet for my 1873 Winchester replica. I think the wiggly Marble tang sight is keeping it from reaching its full accuracy potential. I have a barrel mounted ladder sight I will try next time. I like the .45 Colt.

About Like Gettin Shot with a 357

If you look at the upper end of what a 45 Colt can do... I'm looking at a commercially available Buffalo Bore 325 grain bullet loaded to 1,325 fps and packing 1,267 ft. lbs the words ballistically inferior aren't what crosses my mind.

I'm thinkin that's about equivalent to getting shot with a 357... twice... OUCH!!!... Your gonna feel below average.

Cowboy action shooting is why .45 colt is still popular. .45 colt can be loaded to much higher energy levels than it is normally shot at. F=mv. People forget the v part all the time and only focus on the m. So, perhaps in standard loads the .45 colt is inferior. But, the same can be said for every caliber save maybe .44 magnum and more powerful. 9mm, .40 and .45 aren't impressive until they are loaded hotter. And, even then, they don't hold a candle to magnum rounds and hotter .45 colt loads (as other posters have shown).

i don't know much about the 44 magnum or the 45 colt. i have been back and forth about which one is for me. lately i have been leaning towards the 45 colt and this is why. when i look at the local classified ads, i see a lot of 44 magnum guns for sale. rarely do i see a 45 colt gun for sale. there has to be something to this. maybe people are buying the 44 and finding out they don't like shooting it, i don't know. but i tend to think it's because people, handloaders in particular, like the 45 colt. i'm buying into the statement i hear so often, it's a handloaders dream. any thoughts?

I think the 44 Mag is more popular, but you can't get lighter loads for it. I think people buy it and a box of ammo and go shoot it to find out that they don't like the recoil so sell it off.

Media hype makes them want one and the recoil makes them not like it.

Pelo, the 44 mag CAN shoot 44 special cartridges which are much lower in power and recoil, but I guess not everyone knows this. It's never been too hard to find very low mileage 44 mags for sale.

Yes, the 45 Colt can be loaded to more power at lower pressures than the 44 magnum. But these hot loads are only safe for use in Encore single shots and the overbuilt Ruger revolvers.

They can also shoot .44 Russian for those wanting weaker loads, but that doesn't matter to me. I'm a .45 LC person. I like it and it works.
