41 vs 44

I wanted to get a .41 for my camping/trail gun about a year ago but could not find one to fit the bill. (that was sold in california) S&W only had a .41 in a long barrel. So I own a .44 4 inch (629). A year later now and BLAM, S&W comes out with the .41 MG. EXACTLY, what I was looking for. Ah well thats the way it goes.
By the way, as far as kick goes, it seems to me that the way people load .41s they must be getting the same kick as a .44!
a bullet in the 210-250 range going 1200- 1400 + fps? 240 grain going 1180-1200 seems to be standard factory for the .44 mag.
Wouldn't the .41 have the same is not more kick as the .44 with factory ammo??

The recoil can be similar to 44 once you start working it up, but for anything normal it is going to be a good bit less IMHO. I've hit 100yd targets with some pretty mild loads, no chrony, but I figure it must be moving well enough to get that far. If it's as super heavy duty as a 44, I could care less. I think it is way more fun overall to shoot :) Not to say I wont have a 44 mag ever...but for now I got my fix with the 41.

1600 fps is pretty fast stuff. Must kick good.
Some of the posts a couple pages back were talking about how the .41 never took off as a police cal. They were talking about how it would go through most of the car and then the person they were shooting at.......well I kinda think thats probably why the police didn't get behind it. Its just too much power, too dangerous to use in places where a lot of people are around.
Any how I need to shoot that S&W .41 MG to see how that feels. (Great I'll bet) May be I will have 2 camping/trail guns to choose from, ya know just to keep things interesting. :D

I was shocked when we chronographed stuff. Then again, I realized that was probably why my hand throbbed for a week afterwords. My grandpa said he saw 2 foot flames shoot out the barrel when I was shootin' it.

I want to get a .41 mag.. just at this time in my life, I can't justify the cost/benefit area of it.. I'll probably just get a redhawk in .44mag to save on ammo  instead of having 2 calibers that are spendy.. though, the mild recoil is a selling point.

.41=more consistant hits (for me)

I just read through this thread on the 41 vrs 44... Several years ago having owned both, I made the choice to carry my .41 Mt. Gun as my berry picking gun because I could dump a triple tap in the vitals zone a lot more consistantly than I could with a .44. For me being able to hit my target is more important than carrying a bigger bullet. However, now the .41 is relegated to beign a back-up to a 12 gauge loaded with Brenneke Black Magic... I pick berries in grizzly bear habitat

dumb question for an interesting post

.44mag can shoot .44 special.........357 mag can shoot .38 special.......Can .41 mag shoot a non magnum round?

I would just forego all this brain-burning thought about .41 and .44's and get the best handgun round ever made..... the .45colt and be done with it.
You will never have to buy another reloading die or differant brass and you can sell all the other calibre handguns to buy more guns in .45colt.
The .45colt is the best round ever invented for anything.
There ya go, I'm glad I helped to put an end to this talk about the inferior calibres of .41 and .44

:p

Can .41 mag shoot a non magnum round?
Kinda,,,
some .41Mags are setup for .41mag/10mm by having a different cylinder.

Other than that, no, not really,,there isn't a .41 Special ala .38spl/.357mag.

Pity really, a .180 gr .41 doing 850/900 ish would be a great round for a medium frame revolver.

eh?

41 Magnum = .410"

10mm = .400"

?

(I'm with the 45 Colt guy, except I ain't selling off my inferior 41 and 44 Redhawks.)

I see that Georgia Arms - www.georgia-arms.com - is developing an "enhanced performance" 44 Special load that looks particularly intriguing...and lending more credence to the flexibility of the .44 Mag/.44 Special combo guns (i.e., pretty much any .44 Mag).

I've owned one of those Taurus snubbies in 41 mag for 3+ years now and I love it. I have bought and sold many different pistols and revolvers, but this one is going to stay in my collection. IMHO the only drawback in compared to the big 44 is the price and availability of the ammo. If you reload (which I haven't been personally able to do yet) you will spend a mint on ammo... but it is worth every penny. I've tried both the 41 and the 44, and I would take the 41 handsdown.

.41 & .40
Yep. Any semblence of accuracy would be,,,difficult.
I swear I saw mention of it,,but can't find it anywhere on the web.
Elusive as the :
.41 Mag Python
.44 Spl Python
.44 Spl Model 19

Trim some cases to the length of the other specials and voila! .41 Special! Less unused case capacity for a more effecient cartridge. On the police issue; if someone would have loaded the 210 gr. police load @ 1000 FPS with a JHP, instead of lead SWCs, would the .41 have declined to begin with, considering there was the model 58, specifically for the application? Does make you wonder, especially if bullet technology had been more advanced in the 60's and 70's.

Then of course there is that .45 LC thing! ;)

Frankly, I doubt if the 41 mag would have caught on for police use because of the frame size (ie BIG revolver). Not many police use 44's these days or revolvers for that matter. I love the 41 mag and can consistantly shoot better with it than the 44 magnum guns. But, I can shoot the 44's okay or at least as good as most. Shooting the 41 mags loaded to 800-900 fps would be a dream to shoot accurately and would make a great home defense round.

Picked up another Model 57 over the weekend. Those critters are getting a little pricey. This one is a 4-inch nickel. I still may order one of the new (to be released) Smith Model 57's that may be coming out later this year. I want one that I can carry comfortably in the woods and the newest one is too darn nice to shoot.

ooh! ooh!

Someone mentioned my favorite hole-maker, the 41 AE.

THAT's a winner. Too bad cases cost $69 per hundred now! (Good thing I have a few....) :D
Uses 41 Magnum-sized bullets, and can send the Sierra 170g JHC fast enough to expand (see, I got this stash of Speer's discontinued 180g Gold Dot built for the 41 AE :D ).

See how happy I am?
