.30/30WIN a hard kicker?

It's a combination of stock design and weights of the guns being shot

.... and the load used- 170gr bullet at 2300 f/sec will not be anything like shooting a 100gr practice load at 2300 .... I've done both, and even in a fairly heavy rifle, the former is a "beater" (gun, brass, shoulder) .....

I have been a proud owner of a 30-30 lever action Winchester since I was 10. It is my bread and butter and I love it dearly. Of course, when I first started shooting it, it kicked like a mule. However, at that age I am sure everyone would agree with that assessment. As I got older, I tried numerous calibers, as high up as a 470 nitro express, including a 30-06. Maybe its not fair for me to give my opinion because, as I said, I have used my 30-30 since I was a child, I know it better than any gun I own, and I am very much aware on how it handles. That being said, my experience with a 30-06 has shown me there is much more kick behind that trigger. I can't say it was a specific bullet cause Ive tried numerous. The 30-06 had a noticeable increase in the amount of kick.

Reasoning for someone saying otherwise?

Well, as was said by an earlier post, the 30-06 may have been equipped with a butt pad where as the 30-30 may not have. I would think even with a pad, the 30-06 would still have a noticeable amount of kick to it, but maybe the pad was just that good. I think I would want it next time I picked up a 470 nitro.

I am not one that uses scopes often. All my guns are buckhorn or ghost ring. When I'm shooting, I like to be snug against my gun. I don't give it a death grip, just a firm hold. I keep myself snug so I move with the gun rather than against it when fired. Guns that I have shot with a scope, some sit so tall I need to lift my cheek from the gun. I feel I have less control and I have a harder time finding my center. Being off the gun, I also feel more of the kick. With the 30-30 having a reasonable amount of power, this could very well have been the cause for their conclusion.

People shoot their guns differently. I try and stay consistent with every gun I shoot so I can give a fair judgement. This person might have been new to a 30-30 and was just uncomfortable with the handling.

I would have to disagree on their opinion.
