.30/30WIN a hard kicker?

So much depends on the shooter. I am 5' 10", 215 pounds or so,
fairly muscular, shoulders well developed enought to function as a recoil pad. When I shoot a CF rifle I make sure I get in there TIGHT !

The old 94s are the absolute worst for me, but then anything with the old style curved "rifle" butt is painful, unless everything is done just right, and then its only uncomfortable. For me. I never could understand why that shape was popular, other than after you fired your one shot from your flintlock, it made a better war club than a "shotgun" style buttstock.

IIRC, the crescent style butts would allow a mounted shooter to put the stock on his upper arm and turn in the saddle to shoot behind him. Not practical with a gun with the potency of the .30/30, but in older BPC guns like the 1873 winchester in milder loads- .44/40, .38/40 or .32/20 - would be right handy.

Probably .30-30 had a plastic butt plate and the 06 had a very soft recoil pad. Havign said that, for some reason, some rifles just kick like mules. I had a .300 Win. Remington 700 BDL that was freaking vicious. It had a good recoil pad, but I was scared of the rifle. I have a Savage 110 300 Win that has half the perceived recoil on my shoulder that the 700 had. I have shot .458 Win, 416 Rigby, .35 Whelen, .338 Win mag, .340 Wby, .300 Rum, .375 H&H, 8 Rem Mag, and a whole laundry list of other rifles without a brake and none of them have the perceived recoil of this particular rifle. The only thing I have ever shot that hurt as bad as it was the first model of 3 1/2" magnum shotgun that Mossberg made.

We grew up in the 50's and 60's shooting 03's, K98's, M1's/M14's, etc, and didnt know they were supposed to kick. We didnt know any different or better, and it was what it was, and you were taught how to properly and comfortably shoot them.

We used to shoot them in our tee shirts too, steel butt plates and all, and rarely a bruise the next day.

Exactly. A hot loaded 30-06 with a steel butt plate doesn't kick much at all. A 30-30 doesn't kick enough to even notice.

Maybe for you, but not for me. I might agree that a .223 doesn't kick enough to really notice, but not a .30-30.

Long ago, I watched one of our Basic Training DI's fire an M16A1 with the butt on the tip of his nose. He also fired it with the butt on a sensitive male location. Now, I know DI's are tough, but I wouldn't do that with a .30-30, OR a .30-06.

Would you?

My father said when he was in basic, his DI shot the m-14 off his forehead, emptying an entire magazine, in semi auto of course. .308 vs .30-06, but still close.

i have a model 94 and the recoil with super x 150 grainers is negligable.

i however shoot heavy recoiling rifles on a regular basis. to compare it though the recoil is about equal to my remington 783 in 308. but my model 94 made in 1960 weighs in at 5.98 pounds. it is bare bones cause i shoot it with open sights. my 783 with scope and mounts tips just over 8 pounds.

shoot the 30-30 without optics and the rifle recoils considerably less.

My DI shot a full mag from an M16 off his scrotum. Like Hawg Haggen said, those model 94's don't kick, but no I still ain't shooting one that style.
I was surprised by how much more impulse Hornady 225gr 44mag have in my 94 Trapper.

Maybe it's just my perception, but I have always felt like my Marlin had much less recoil than the .270 Remington I used to have. One of the reasons I like the .30-30 is that it does a good job at reasonable ranges without beating up the shooter. If you want ballistics close to .30-30 with less recoil, get an SKS-you can shoot it all day and not feel abused.

I think it's the individual's perception.
When I purchased my Mosin's, I was told by many that they kicked like a mule. I thought recoil was minimal with them, and was surprised. My uncle then pointed out the fact that I have been bludgeoned by 7mm Rem. Mag. And .300 Rem. Mag. for years now, and my perception of recoil has changed. But, I have been shooting a 12ga. since I was 7, and I'm almost 37 now.

"kicks like a mule!" I have heard that a lot. What's not said is mules come in different sizes!:D

You can calculate recoil energy from the cartridge energy and weight of the gun it is fired in.

But the FEEL is an individual matter. That's a matter of stock design, stock fit to the shooter, the way the recoil impulse is delivered, and the expectations/experience level of each individual shooter.

Firing .308 out of a 9lb semi auto gives one feel. The exact same ammo shot from a 6lb bolt gun gives quite another!

Also a rifle in the 12ft/lb range for recoil energy can feel like one in the 20ft/lb range, if the stock and the shooter (and how they hold it) aren't a good match.

As with the .30/30, I think that depends a lot on which Mosin, and how it is loaded.

A 91/30 with a 150ish grain bullet launched @ 2800? Not bad at all in my experience. One of the M44, or M38 carbines, loaded with 181gr soft points? That'd get your attention!

30-30's kick?

I have to agree with AK103K's comments on this 30-30 discussion. But, just for my personnel opinion; if someone thinks their 30-30 is uncomfortable to shoot, try a slip on recoil pad. That might help. Just a thought.

Being under the age of ten or thereabouts?

I think Pathdoc got it right from the very beginning or it could be assigned to stock fit, the loose nut behind the stock.

The 30-30 doesn't have a heavy recoil. Get a 30-30 in your favorite lever gun and enjoy. As stated earlier it has about the same recoil as an AK, or less.

JD, you are telling me that was a service round out of that Mosin pistol?

Maybe it was, but you can call me sceptical .....

Most of the carbines produce a pretty good fuzzle flash with full powered ammo. That that thing should be making a pretty good fireball.

I'm callin' shenanigans.

Someone told me a 300 WSM was a hard kicker and I told my father who was in nam about it and he laughed saying it wasnt and to tell them to put the stock between their legs and fire. haha
