22lr handgun for self defense?

@TheDeuce: All this ranting has lead to this .. Getting shot with a bullet fired from a gun no matter the caliber will not be a pleasant experience and if all I had within my grasp was a Ruger Sr-22 .. I would not feel like I was unarmed .. Just saying !!

That is so. A .22LR handgun may not be ideal ballistically, but anyone who thinks they can't be dangerous or even deadly is mistaken. RFK was assassinated with a .22 revolver, and Reagan was nearly done in by a .22 revolver round that first ricocheted off his car.

Guns are dangerous. Even the "little" ones.

Yesterday at the range I had a missfire after shooting 140 rounds of CCI Mini Mags HP ammo. I removed the round from my Kimber 1911/22lr conversion and rechambered it (rotated 180 degrees). I still had a failure to fire with it. I removed the round and loaded it into my Ruger SR22P and it still failed to fire. Now with three well spaced pin strikes on the rim I retired it to the missfired round container that the range supplies for such rounds. I've been shooting for close to 40 years now and CCI Mini Mags have become my goto ammo for 22LR for a very long time. This is the second Mini Mag that has done this for me in the last 6 months and the ammo was purchased at a different location for each missfire. As I dont intentionally carry 22LR for SD and I dont think the odds stack up for the many 1000's of rounds that I have shot in my life it does concern me that the two missfires were so close together. This wont hamper my shooting of Mini Mags but it will be interesting to see when and if the next on missfires.

I'm thinking about a .22 revolver for my wife to keep in the house when I'm not home. She can't handle the recoil on a .38 or even a .380 too well. And she can't rack the slide on most pistols we've tried. She doesn't really like the Beretta 21A .25acp she tried, even though she can load it without having to rack the slide.

So I'll check some .22 revolvers for the best trigger.

Not a bad choice at all. Especially if she will practice with it. My mother (66), keeps a .22 revolver by her bed.

I tried to get her to keep a 9mm auto, but she had too much trouble racking the slide.

My brother gave her a .38, but she wouldn't practice with it because it kicked too much.

S&W and Ruger both make very nice ones.
