.22 handguns

Thinking about getting a 22 LR

My recommendation is a Ruger MK-2.
I have not had a MK-3 in my hands to shoot, yet.
The Ruger is a good solid gun but is HELL to put back together, after cleaning. The muzzle must be UP to get the pigtail to work right.

I have two favorites. The S&W K-22 and the Ruger Single Six.I've shot a bunch of others but these two are the best bang for the buck IMHO.tom. YMMV.

My little brother just got a S&W 22A semiauto for his birthday and in 50 rds of Remington .22 Thunderbolt it had 2 failure to feeds and one failure to fire.

On the feed failures I guess the extractor just slipped over the round or something because we just racked the slide again and started shooting, my grandfather's 22A does this as well, what's the deal?

As for the failure to fire I think it was the ammo because there was a nice big dent in the rim of the round.

BTW what do yall do with rounds that get hit but don't go bang? I just ripped the bullet out with some pliers.

CZ 75 SA with .22 Kadet Kit

I take my CZ to the range with the Kadet Kit. I can shoot either 9mm or .22 with the same grip, same trigger, same safety, etc.
CZs are well built, easy to field strip, reliable, and accurate. You just can't ask for more.

Conversion kits are fine for training but I don't care for them as a substitute for a standard .22 for fun shooting. The conversion kit usually has all the good and bad features of the host gun, plus it is usually heavier and bulkier than a good .22 has to be. Accuracy and reliability may be OK, but conversions are not noted for either compared to a regular .22.

Have had a 22A for about 6 years and have had no problems. Except after many many round the firing pin broke. I would try something else other than Remington. Mine likes the federal in the bulk pack:)

My experience has been the opposite. I actually prefer the heft and the "bulk" of the CZ. It feels like I'm shooting a gun and not a toy. That is why I sold my Ruger 22/45 and now shoot the CZ instead. I find I shoot the CZ much better than I shot the Ruger. There was nothing "wrong" with the Ruger, I just do better with the CZ.

I would also note that CZ sells the Kadet as a dedicated pistol (not just a conversion).

I really enjoy the Walther P22, and my CZ Kadet.

I'll echo Hanno's statement, had two 22/45's and really couldn't get into either. The Kadet kit feels like a 'real' firearm used for SD, and it's good practice.

What's your favorite .22 handgun, and why? I've thought about getting one.

That's a tough call. I have a small collection of eight .22s and I really like several of them; a venerable Woodsman a nice Buckmark and a neat little TPH. For sheer fun value, ease of use and overall quality factors I have to say my newest, a Daewoo DP-52 gets the top marks because it is so reliable, has great ergonomics, and is quite accurate. It is a Walther PP clone, so it also has a bit of sex appeal.;) Hard to find but not all that expensive, the little Daewoo has turned into a real keeper.

My first love will always be my Woodsman, but it's a grand safe Queen these days.

S&W models 18 and 41

Both of which are a bit difficult to find.

M18 is a 4", .22LR version of the M15 Combat Masterpiece. Target hammer and trigger, adjustable sights. Drives tacks.

M41 is the S&W semiauto .22LR target pistol. Excellent accuracy.

I have an M18; I shot military-provided 41's in competition, but I don't have my own M41. Wouldn't mind acquiring one someday, though.

I have a Beretta U22 Neos and love it. Haven't had much experience with any others so I will not comment. I am currently looking at getting a Ruger in .22 lr but haven't decided which one yet.

I just got a Browning Buckmark 5.5 bbl with fiberoptic front sight. Range trip was Friday. 200 rounds and not a single problem. First time shooting it, and ive never shot such an accurate gun. I was shooting Aquila high velocity HP's that I got from Midway recently. I wanted to be able to go to continue to go to the range without spending a fortune on ammo. I paid under 300$ at academy. Alot of fun to shoot. I also used this gun to introduce my Mom to shooting Friday. She has always been scared of guns, so this gun was ideal due to recoil. Anyway, Good luck

I had a single six a few years back, and it always shot to the left no matter what. Could that have been the gun, or was it me?

I only have 1 .22 handgun so i'll just vote for that. It's a Taurus 94.A double action revolver for $290 new with a lifetime warranty is hard to beat

My favorites depend on my mood:

smith 41, HS Hamden Victor, HS Hamden trophy, colt match target, smith k-22 are five that I always love to take with me to the range. They don't get any nicer than them!!

But, as a plinker it is hard to beat a buckmark or a MK-I or MK-II ruger.
