22 for ccw

I wonder what ya'll think about 22.mag? Like say the Taurus Model 941 Ultra-Lite?

Perhaps better than a .22 LR, but by how much out of handgun barrel? If it's all you got, you have to make do with it, but I wouldn't choose a .22 mag if other more potent options were available. That being said, there was a guy in South Africa who used a .22 Mag NAA mini-revolver to fend off and armed gang, though the little revolver actually blew up in the process (if my recollection is correct).

This is a picture of four different types of ammunition fired into calibrated ballistics gelatin from a walther P-22 with a 3.4 inch barrel. The only CCI round used (velocitor) penetrated the roughly the entire block, over 15.8 inches. The p22 used in the test was the short barrelled version. There are 5 inch barrels.

Well sorry to hear about that. But not everyone finds their .22s to be unreliable. My Smith 2214, Glock AACK .22 unit for the 26, and Smith 34 2 inch J frame .22 are all very reliable. My daughter, an accountant, has my Ruger MK II 4 inch stainless .22 as her gun. We've shot it for years with no problem (she didn't like any of my, uh, vast selection of 'powerful' carry guns so she preferred the .22 and could hit very well with it.)

Me too, sorry to hear that!

I got my first 22 handgun about 18 month's ago, a little Beretta Bobcat 21A, it turned out to be a jam-o-matic, that was OK, it was a range gun and helped me clear a chamber faster, which I appreciated.

But after firing it about 1000 times it almost never jammed. I've stated in this post. Now I would actually carry that gun if I had a CCW for it, but I can only carry revolver. Don't ask!

Here's a possible reason for carrying a 22lr, or maybe not...

yesterday morning I had to run up to the store and bank real quick... for some reason I saw the little Beretta 22 I had stuck in one of those cheap elastic velcro ankle holsters stuck over in the corner of my dressing shelf.... So I figured what the heck... just strap it on for this quick trip...

got home, did some yard work... ate lunch, walked the dog... went to the gun range for two hours, shooting prone and sitting.... on the way back home did some other business... got home, ate a sandwich watching TV, fell asleep woke up and remembered I needed to walk the dog again... got ready to go out and started to go down stairs to get my normal carry gun... but didn't feel like it... got the dog, headed down the street and then realized... I still had the 22 strapped to my ankle... I had completely forgotten about it once I headed out in the morning! I'm still trying to figure out if this was a good thing or bad.

"SD rimfires are for the timid or infirmed. Able, trained shooters do not even consider them unless circumstances require."

Hehehehehe...

Yeah, right. You keep thinking that.

wow seams there is a war starting over my question lol. That was not my intention I got all the opinion I was looking for my final conclusion is I dont see why a person cant consider it aproprate to carry for a ccw if they choose to. Seing pics of ballistics gell shots and reading what nay sayers and those who are pro 22 carry id say no porblem. Personally ill stick with my 9mm but i would feel comfortable with my wife carring one if thats what she decide's on. Staff feel free to lock this thread or let it continue to your amusement lol

To answer the OP; YES

I have and will again CCW a 21a Bobcat in 22LR. There are a whole lot of folks under the ground because of the 22LR. Is it the best CCW? No its a compromise but any Handgun is a compromise for self defense.

This is an unusual thread. People have different opinions on carry guns and calibers and they've been expressing them. That never happens here normally.

Agreed...

I'll have to agree Star... usually it turns into a bickerfest of people's prejudice and insults. There has legitimately been some real exchange of philosophy and info here. I have personally been visiting this one thread several times a day for several days now, wondering who else is going to put in their .02. I for one feel a bit richer for the experience.

I think we lucked out a little.
