22 for ccw

A .22LR at realistic range with good shot placement (the result of lots of training) could be very effective.

A larger, easier to control pistol in the Walther PPK or TPH size would be easy to control and easy to conceal. If your wife is OK with SA then the aluminum alloy Beretta 71 is the way to go. So reliable, the Mossad/Shin Bet used it as well as the Israeli air marshalls.

Google Mordechai Rachamim if you want to read about what a determined fighter with a .22LR pistol can accomplish.

I will confess to entertaining the idea of a .22 semi-auto as a carry weapon.

Specifically, the S&W M2206.

I've had one in the past, but sold it to a friend. I recently decided I wanted another one, which I luckily won in an online auction. I should get it Thursday.

I just think it would be neat to have somebody make a leather horizontal shoulder rig for this gun. Something to wear while walking trails, etc.

I did. Damn you. Now I want one of those Beretta Model 70s too.

As a completely off-topic aside, I couldn't help but notice this sentence in the story about Mordechai Rachamim:

"The three surviving male Palestinian terrorists received 12-year jail sentences for attacking a commercial airliner with machine guns and explosives that resulted in the killing and wounding of several passengers and crew."

Man, don't mess with Switzerland! You attack a plane with automatic weapons, kill a pilot and wound the passengers and they'll put you away for 12 whole years.

Yep, 12 years. For murder, assault, and terrorism.

It's normally not the best choice, but if that's all you can manage it is acceptable.

There are more than a few .38s, 9mm, .380, and even .40/.40s that are designed specifically for CCW. I'd look into them first.

OR, if the carrier cannot handle something like a .380, there is the .32ACP.

Hello Punt,,,

This has probably already been said but I will second the motion that if a .22 is what you decide to carry,,,
Get a good snubnose revolver instead of a semi-automatic.

Smith & Wesson 317 is an 8 round snubbie,,,

Even a Charter Arms Pathfinder would be a nice choice.

I would steer clear of the taurus Model 94 snubnose revolver,,,
I own several Taurus handguns and like them well enough,,,
The model 94 has been plagued with Q-C issues.

The main advantage is that you can afford lots of practice ammo,,,
What you will lose in power you just might regain in accuracy.

Just my thoughts,,,

I have some small caliber guns such as 22lr & 25 acp ,but they are mostly for pinkering or when I walk our puppies.
I preferr calibers such as 40 cal, 380 acp, & 38 spl more for ccw.
Heard a joke once about a 80 year old man tha tdecided to shoot himself with a 22cal. in the head, after doing so , he waited or the pain, walked his dog , fixed breakfast, read the newspaper, watch tv etc .... , s far as we know today, he is still ticking ..... :D

Can someone quote reliable statistics where in a civilian SD shooting, BG shots with a 22 continued the crime at a statistically significant greater rate and with a reasonable effect size that makes a difference.

The issue is whether such data exists to the extant that it would suggest that you don't carry the 22 at all?

Also, is there any data suggesting that since guns are mostly used for deterrence, there is a differential deterrence rate? I've asked experts on this, and they don't know any from the criminological stat literature or the prison interview studies.

So, it boils down to the issue of whether the 22 is the gun you are going to carry and it gives so much benefit as compared to being unarmed that the rate of failure (if proven in civilian crime incidents) that it isn't worth carrying.

Given concealability, expense or recoil characteristics - they work for people.

A question:

It's late at night. You hear the bad guy. By whatever circumstance, you can only grab one gun (that's the scenario rules). One is a 1911 with one round vs. a Buckmark with 11 22 LRs. Which do you grab and go?

Interesting question Glenn,,,

I wish you would have said small .22 revolver with 6 shots",,,
Then I would have no problem leaving the 1911.

I do believe the saying about "all other factors being equal, a bigger bullet is better",,,
However I have seen firsthand the damage a .22 round can inflict,,,
I do not discount it as "worthless".

But the fact remains,,,
Some people are not going to use even a .380 or a .32.

My ex wife was an anti-gun advocate,,,
Until someone tried to break into the apartment,,,
It took the cops 14 minutes to respond in broad daylight.

Interestingly enough her profession was Public Safety Dispatcher,,,
She knew better than anyone else how long the response times can be.

Long story short she became a believer and wanted to learn to shoot,,,
My .357 Magnum was way out of her comfort zone,,,
My .38 was uncomfortable for her to shoot,,,
We found her an SP 101 in .22 LR,,,
She could (would?) shoot that.

She practiced shooting it and got very proficient with that revolver,,,
She used the Police range and got help from her sergeant,,,
Yes, I wish she would have used my .38 at least,,,
But it was the .22 or nothing at all,,,
That was the situation.

I worked out of town 4 nights a week,,,
I felt better knowing she had the .22 by her pillow.

Would I have felt better with her sleeping next to my .357 Mag?,,,
Actually no, because she would never hit anything with it

Given the option I would now get her a S&W 317 for an 8 shot cylinder,,,
Because 8 rounds of high velocity stingers in the clavicle,,,
Beats the alternative of nothing at all.

Dang I wish I would have gotten that SP101 in the divorce!

would only trust a .22 in a revolver. Rimfire primers and heel-based bullets don't make for the most reliable ammo in the world so I want a misfire to be cured by another pull of the trigger.

+1

Consider this: self defense where the assailant never intended to kill you and self defense where the assailant is bent on killing you. Is the .22 equal in both cases. I would guess most would say no. One should never assume that the sight of a handgun will turn someone away. It's that mindset that may get you killed. Face it most BGs have more nerve than brains. Back in the wild west many of the shootings were done with small calibers. Often the receipient of the bullet died......days later of infection. The goal of self defense is not to kill but to STOP your assailant. In this day of drug hyped BGs trying to scare them or punch them full of pin hole size holes may get you dead. Use a .22 if you like but make sure you have a "plan B" cause there is a good chance you will need it.

Hello Dakota,,,

I understand all of your points,,,
As for me personally, you're preaching to the choir.

A .357 Mag is my preferred SD tool,,,
A .38 special is my 2nd choice,,,
A .22 is never my choice.

But again I state the reality of the situation,,,
In some cases like with my ex wife,,,
It was a .22 LR,,,
Or nothing.

There was not one thing I could say to convince her otherwise,,,
By some of the statements I have read in this forum,,,
Some would rather the nothing than the .22,,,
Surely you aren't advocating that.

There is an old Heinlein saying,,,
Women and cats will do as they please,,,
Men and dogs should just relax and get used to it
.

If a woman (or anyone for that matter),,,
After all of my best counseling and exhortations,,,
Makes up their mind that a .22 is what they will to carry,,,
I will help them obtain the best one available and teach them to use it well.

Some would rather the nothing than the .22,,,

Kinda crazy, but a 22 is a bullet and a bullet can kill, I know cause I killed a lot of large animals with one. 1500 lb steer, one shot down he goes dead.

Every farmer I know carries a 22 in the truck or tractor for killing critters.

I know a few gals carry .22s and I for one wont mess with them.

Some of these guys give me the impression they have no fear of a 22. :) that is a bad thing. Lots of folks been killed by a 22.

the reason im asking is it was brought up to me as a option for my wife

Ok well that changes things. The best handgun for your wife is the one she picks out for her self. While that may end up being a .22 of some sort it also might be a 1911 Colt
Use the search function and you'll find scads of threads that deal with the wife or girl friend getting a gun. The majority of them will contain this link.

That's a web sight written by a lady that post on this forum and it's full of excellent advice for a female shooter or any other shooter for that matter.
