"The fact that folks dont buy HKs due to its price skews the polls. Otherwise, I am really not sure what 9mm beats P30 and what 45 beats the HK45."-- Quote

I'll take the bait. I think the HK P7 is a superior 9mm to a P30 and a good 1911 is a better .45 acp thrower than the HK45 (Although they are all excellent handguns and it's purely a matter of personal taste; I'll take any of them. And this is the internet. We're supposed to argue). I'm sure I'm not the only one that would think that way since it is a matter of opinion, and both have a very loyal following for a variety of reasons.

Back to the topic, I think the S&W M&P should be the "2008 Handgun of the Year." The reason is purely due to the fact they have finally offered an excellent polymer, low maintenance, and inexpensively made (akin to the other polymer pistols) weapon that law enforcement should be able to purchase and trust. It also incorporates some things (i.e., good sights, ergonomic design, ambidextrous abled mag release, ability to field strip without pulling the trigger, safety in some) which may be considered weaknesses in other polymer pistols.

I don't remember any revolver introductions this year that really caught my attention.

Well you may prefer a 1911 over hk45, but if you think M&P takes the day I beg to differ since XDm is far superior product that MP.

Why bother voting here? It's already been decided:

"" The Shooting Industry gave the 2008 Handgun of the Year Award to Ruger for the Ruger LCP (Keltec clone.)" This sort of has a Blagojevich-gate scent to it, same as when MotorTrend always gave GM cars the BestOfYear award. S&W is ahead by 1/2 % (12/25/ 11:00) My favorites now (owning 4 Glocks and 2 Keltecs) would be between the S&W M/P platform-gun, and the "Revolutionary" Sig 250 multi-cal gun. This should have been invented by Gaston! And it still may be! It will be my next buy, if the buyer-reviews on the unofficial sites prove it worth it. ( I mean testing by US, not some slick rag.) The next choice of gun to buy will be the S&W M/P model in .45ACP. Fits my hand as well as any of my Glocks and is made in USA. That means something to me.

where is the Glock, Walther and HK crowd?

Whatever the different industries and magazines decide is not material here since this contest is to see what the TFL members think.

So far:

SW is in lead with 60, Glock with 55, Ruger and Springfield are tied at third position with 49.

I am surprised that Walther and HK did not do well in this poll.

In 2008 I only bought two new handguns, a Korth and a SIG P210. Both are currently my favorites and it is a tie for 2008 in between them.

hmmm. The best of '08. All of my guns were made prior, except for one g17 gen 3. I'm not sure if anything new came out in '08. I did buy an M&P 9 last year.....I'm confused! My 1851 navy ball and capper would be out of the question then. So, I forgot my Bushmaster pistol. Its my Bushmaster Pistol that wins.
A Bushmaster carbon 15 9mm pistol. It wins hands down for fun factor.
Although, some wouldn't call it a pistol. It's considered one here...and i've never seen a Korth. I hear they're pricey man jewelry.

PzGren...how do you find workmanship on your Korth?

Mine is a .22 l.r. made in 1969 and the workmanship is absolutely amazing! Those guns were basically handmade in the small Korth shop, calling it a factory would be an exaggeration.
They made some changes in the production and use a barrel sleeve since many years but the finish is still the same high quality. Ever since I shot a Korth Combat of a friend about a dozen years ago, I was looking for a good opportunity to get one.

PzGren, I am also looking for one, but here in Pakistan we dont have a wide selection. I have applied for a special permit to import three handguns. When I get it, I want one Korth in 9mm, one Korth revolver in 357, and one small one if availavle in .22 lr.

I am also looking for a 1911 but dont know which is absolutely the best. I have 6000 dollars budget for a 1911, but still cant decide.

Korth very over rated and outdated.

In which respect is a Korth overrated, in performance, or in quality? The only revolver manufacturer close in quality is Freedom Arms/ Casull.

Can you explain in complete sentences how it is outdated?

"Sorry, In my opinion they are not a really attractive pistol or revolver. Not a work gun for sure. More of an oddity or collector piece. Kinda like my Semmerling but not as rare or atractive. I just see nothing to love."

Rogertc1....your comment does not explain how Korth is an outdated handgun. Lets not even talk about your reference to it being over rated.

Compared to my Smith & Wesson 327 Performance Center .357 Magnum snubbie revolver it is outdated looking. Compare them. Now the Korth pistol is a gun only a grandmom would like.

Unlike the investment cast Freedom Arms M83, the Manurhin MR73 is machined out of forgings. Unlike the Korth, it has acquitted itself internationally in constabulary service and bullseye competition. By my lights, these qualities make it a better sidearm than either of the foregoing.
