1911's Suck!

especially after I learned to leave it alone and just shoot it. I believe my old one will make 100,000 rounds with ease, and the new 1991A1 is so tight I suspect it will go twice the distance.

One of these days, when I can scrape up enough money, I'm gonna get me a SA Mil-Spec with which to have a real good time!

BTW, I should have mentioned from the beginning that this whole thread was started in jest as a result of a god-awful long thread started by Wild Romanian. I really adore the classic lines of the 1911 pistol.

Sorry George!

I love to hear how poorly the 1911's perform, supposedly won't even make a good ashtray. Amazing we weren't driven into the ocean in 2 world wars and several other conflicts. Maybe the Italians would like a re-match. Certainly there is a lot of different manufacturers out there-some good and bad, but while there are a few different designs out there, and some work as well, I really don't see anything working better-price be hanged. I bought a 1991A1 and added a long steel trigger, steel mainspring housing, an extra 8 round magazine and a thin extended slide stop for 5 bills, and could have left the plastic stuff on and got it for 4. So much for too expensive.

My father swears by his aging 1911. It looks as if it were 60+ years old. But Dad loves it anyway, and he's never had a problem with it.

Now, I love the 1911, but it's not like the 1911 was our primary arm in kicking ass in two world wars. I'm sure all the bombers, tanks, artillery, battleships, rifles, etc, contributed just a bit too.

This afternoon, two friends and I spent several hours at our club. The temperature was low 60's, bright, bright sun, and a slight breeze. Between the three of us we had at least a dozen guns. There was one new gun in the bunch whose owner got to show off and brag about. We, of course, were invited to shoot and comment. Interspersing the shooting was some shared technical assistance, Comments about maybe the Redskins could win another game this season, a few new jokes we shared with other. There was of course good natured bantering with a few other member who came by. A new member brought a guest out who was new to shooting and trying to decide what kind of gun to buy. We of course let him shoot several of ours and, of course, gave him the benefit of our observations and opinions. After the guns were cleaned and put away, we enjoyed a temperate amount of adult beverages and parted company looking forward to the next time we could get together.

In a long-winded way, I am painting the picture of a perfect day under perfect weather, with good friends and like minded company doing what we enjoy doing. To me this is what shooting is all about. If we all were allowed to own nothing but rusty M-10 smiths, still, more of us die of heart attacks than shoot-outs. If we were limited to nothing but double barrel shotguns made before 1900, still more of us would get killed in auto accidents than being the victims of renegade KGB operatives, etc, etc.

I feel sorry for someone that has such a small life that he spends it flaming others over something as esoteric a the choice of a handgun. I cannot somehow get into H&Ks. But if a non shooter chose to buy an H&H and learn how to use, that is far better for me than him remaining a non-shooter. If someone has a passionate love affair with BHPs, it does not demean him to let me fondle whatever catches my eye this week.

Ease up guys, life is too short. Live and let live.

I think the question we're ALL thinking of is: "Is the Glock 9mm better than the 1911 .45 ACP?"

Also, I'm wondering if anyone here has given consideration to the very serious question of whether Sigs are better than HKs.

And I think we're long overdue for a discussion of stopping power.

Which "1911"?

The only real Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 established an enviable record for durability and reliability in two world wars and many smaller wars and "police actions."

Unfortunately, many guns which look like the Model 1911A1 have been made, many from inferior parts and using poor manufacturing techniques. Guns and parts have been made in third and fourth world countries, with the only object to get the guns or sears or hammers, or springs at the lowest possible cost. When a POS made from old beer cans fails, everyone blames the "1911", not the no-name parts maker or the cheap-jack assembler.

Then, users demand that the guns function with the most misshaped and misbegotten ammo ever seen, from "flying piepans" to handloads ranging from powder puff to extreme overloads of the ++++P++++++ variety.

The only true 1911's, the U.S. Army Model 1911 and Model 1911A1, with the ammunition for which they were designed, are solid and reliable. The clones range from quite good to complete junk. But let's call them clones or copies, not Model 1911's.
