I know I am late to the party, but my recommendation would have been a Ruger Gunsite Scout. Super handy, looks nice, accurate enough and a 308.
Don't let anyone knock a Nikon scope, I have had 2 prostaffs, a slug hunter and a buckmaster. One of the prostaffs stood up to 450 marlin recoil. I currently am using the buckmaster on my 450 bushmaster build, a combo I used to take a 3 point buck this year with. My current prostaff I have on my RAR 308 and it was used to take an 8 point last year. All of them are 3-9. I would tend to agree with lower power being better in the woods, but to each his own. I won't judge your choice.
That is a nice looking setup. If I wasn't big on keeping few calibers around I'd snap up a 243 bolt gun.
