your only gun: Bulg.Mak or Kel-tec?

It's time for me to decide. I don't have much $, I've done research on this site and elsewhere. It comes down to either the makarov or the kel-tec. If you could have just one of these as your only gun, which would you pick?

Kel-Tec P-11. The trigger will take getting used to, but ammo is more powerful and cheaper.

The Bulg Mak is a more reliable gun and for carry and personal defense, reliability is the most important factor. The fact that it's inexpensive and that ammo is inexpensive so you'll practice more and get better with it is just gravy.

I'd start with the Kel-Tec... it's lighter, holds more rounds of a more powerful round (I think).

But I'd shoot the Hell out of the Kel-Tec before relying on it totally. Put 500+ rounds of what ever seems to feed reliably and shoots straight.

enjoy and report back. If you don't like it, you can sell it and buy a Mak and use the rest of the money for ammo. If you look hard, you may be able to find BOTH for under $375.00

Go with the little Kel-Tec P11. Compact, light weight, potent PD cartridge(not that I couldnt say those things about the Mak). The Kel-Tec is made in the good 'ol US. Tough choice. From what I have heard the Kel-Tec is good, and Maks are good too...

I would have to go with the Mak and some corbon ammo. It is a proven design that has functioned reliably for over 30 years. I would trust my life to my Mak, I couldn't say that about the keltec.

I'd go with an East German Mak (like you can't afford the minimal price difference over the Bulgarian). Nearly 50 years and probably tens of millions made can't be wrong. 9x18mm preferred.

Try Cole Distributing for one ($139, $149 handpicked) or AIM Surplus ($159), then, assuming you don't have an 03 FFL, go to:

http://www.shotgunnews.com/fflguide/

and find an FFL in your area to transfer to you for a minimal fee.

Cole has 880 rounds of corrosive (just clean the gun after shooting) EG milsurp ammo for $85, and smaller lots for less $.

Buy a newbie kit from Makarov.com and get a Pearce grip (highly recommended), a mag loader , an owner's guide, and a couple RUSSIAN mags for ~$40.

Shoot the hell out of it until you get good. Total cost, $250, give or take.

It depends on the uses you have in mind for your only gun. If it`s to be used for just CCW get the Keltec,if you`d like to target shoot and plink with it too get the Mak. As a defensive carry pistol the Keltec has it all over the Mak. It`s smaller,MUCH lighter, more powerful and holds more ammo. However the Keltec is no target gun and just isn`t much fun as a plinker IMO. My best friend has a Bulgarian Mak,it`s a nice pistol and fun to shoot. Pretty accurate for a gun of it`s size. A good carry gun, just not as easy to carry as the Keltec. In SA mode it`s a great plinker. The DA is much heavier than the Keltec and the sights are smaller and harder to pick up but it`s still a better general purpose pistol. They`re both great buys but the Maks are probably more so. Some folks have had reliability problems with Keltecs but they`re much better now than they were a few years ago and FWIW I`ll put my P-11 up against ANY auto for reliability. I`m going on 5000rds. without a single jam (hard to believe, yes, but true)except for the time my buddy tried to fire it while gripping it with his palm *behind* the slide! Which ever you choose I think you`ll be happy with it. Marcus

I would not recomend getting the east german ammo from cole, unless it was about half the price it is. Granted most old ammo works just fine, but why would anyone want to go through the hassle of super cleaning their gun when they can get brand-new russian non-corrosive 9x18 from Dan's Sporting Goods for $105 shipped? (or $52.50 if you only want 500 rounds) This isn't the hot TCW white box either, rather it is the green box made by Novosbirosk, or something like that.

Forget the Bulgarian and go with east German. Fotr a one and only wepon I would suggest the Makrov. Some Kill-tec specimines are problematic, some are wonderful, but all makarovs shoot...

when you have more money you can chrome plate the beast and have a real nice shooter!

I'd get a Mak hands down. They're inexpensive but not cheap. Slim, although a bit heavy, with a really simple mechanism and reliability that's beyond rebuke.

Izzy,

Why do you say forget the Bulgie? Side by side Bulgies are as accurate and reliable as any EG Mak I've fired. The milsurp ones have the same deep blue finish and parts are smooth. I wouldn't discount them.

RCS,

Good call on Dan's. His ammo is much better than Cole's and at great price. Dan ships out orders quick and is very reliable.

So many pistols, so little money.

I didn't do much with mine after I shot Cole's save wipe it down and clean the bore out with a few patches, then run some BreakFree down the bore. No rust yet.

As to Dan's ammo being better, I'm sure it is, but I'm not up on all the sources. It works well enough.

Marcus,
As I understand it, the kel-tec has an 8.5 lb. trigger pull as DA. Is the DA on the Makarov really heavier than that? BTW, thanks everyone for your responses.

Marcus, not on my East German Mak, both S/A and D/A are as good as you will find on most pistols. This is a class act. I don't know if anyone mentioned accuracy but the Maks are awsome. Regards, Richard.

My disclaimer is that I've never shot a makarov or a kel-tec. However, all my guns are major calibers; major not meaning big but meaning something you can pick up at most gun shops (or wal-mart). For that reason alone, I'd go with the kel-tec. You may have trouble finding makarov ammo when you need it.

Do any of you guys know if Dan's Sporting goods has a web address, if not do you have a phone number? Thanks.
