Your First Handgun & Do You Still Have It?

Ruger Blackhawk in .41 mag (1971), a high school graduation present and High Standard Sportking .22 (with lever takedown, 1953) that I inherited from my father which was the first handgun I actually shot. I still have them both, although I don't shoot the High Standard much. It has no "slide hold open" and I've already had to have the chamber swaged once from it getting "pinged" by the firing pin. So I shoot my Ruger MkII bull barrel instead.

Mine was a Charter Arms .22 semi-auto pistol, I dont rememnber what they called this particular model, it was the AR-7 rifle action with a pistol length (4" or 6" I dont remember) barrel and pistol grip. Looked like a broomhandle Mauser.

Traded it, after about 500 rounds it turned into a jam-o-matic.

Great post!

Back in 1994 I got my first apartment and figured I'd need some personal protection there. I bought my first handgun a Russian Makarov with adj. sight for $129.99 (.380ACP-at that time I had no idea what a 9x18 was!) Yes, I still have it. It now wears a walnut grip or Pearce rubber grip depending on my mood. I have probably put about 1500 rounds through it with no problems...once I figured out it didn't like UMC ammo!

When I turned 21 back in 1975, I promptly bought a Walther P-38, which I had lusted over for years. I sold it after a couple of years to get something I don't even remember now. My second gun was a S&W Model 60, from which I later became divorced. I've had many other handguns since then, but wish I had the Walther and the M60 back.

Ruger Mark I .22 auto, 1975 when I was 15 years old. It is long gone. Somehow, although sorely tempted, I resisted the temptation to shoot up the school. Of course, they didn't have video games back then or, under their evil influence and the availability of "massive firepower," I surely would have gone berserk and become a mass murderer. ;)

S&W Model 10 with a 4 inch barrel. Bought it from a friend in my church for $300 about 3 years ago. It was LNIB, and still stays loaded with 2 Glaser Safety Slugs, and 4 Federal Classics. Don't think I'll ever sell it.

Browning Hi-Power, What went wrong during 65 years?

Jennings J-22 - bought it when I was 21. It was only $59. It actually shot really well if kept clean and well oiled. Traded it in on a Swedish Mauser M-96. No real regrets.

My first handgun was a kit that I bought mail order when I was around 12. It had a 22 barrel, and a wooden base, that looked like a cut down rifle stock. You pulled the plunger back, the trigger popped up and held it back. The firing pin was a solid piece of drill rod that was pressed into the round stock that served as the bolt. When you pulled the trigger, the bolt slammed forward firing the gun, and the recoil blew the case out of the chamber. If I remember correctly, the kit was around 4 dollars back in the 50's. It came in a cardboard tube. I do still have it, just for S&G. I used everything from broken drill bits, to pieces of nails for replacement firing pins. Although incredably crude, it did work.

German (RG) 22 cal relvolver. Mid 1960s

It wore out long before my knees, waistline, teeth, hearing, wrists, and other body parts.

the first pistol /revolver i had was an old rg 22 with a 2" barrel, you talk about loud, lousy accuracy, this gun' got all the bad attributes. still have it, haven't shot it in 25 years.

High Standard model Sport King in .22, I bought it brand new in 1978 as soon as I was old enough. I will never sell it and it performs as good today as when I first got it. It has some wear and rust but what a wonderful gun. It was (still is) instrumental in teaching quite a few people the shooting basics.

I still have it in the gun safe behind me. It a old Ruger 22 combo (three screw) that my dad bought me back in 1971. He bought the super blackhawk with a 7 1/2" barrel at the same time for himself. I have both of them now and I pull them out of the safe from time to time just for old times sake.

Oh the memories they bring back.

A S&W model 29 .44 mag. That SOB was accurate as he!!. I traded it for a Glock. I like the Glock but I will never sell or trade another good firearm again.

Mine was a Colt Python, bought it in May of 1978, it had gone through the Colt Custom shop and cost $100 more than the standard model. And I still have it.

Mine was a CZ75. I had just ETS'd from the Army in Germany (1987) and bought the pistol at the Augsburg Rod and Gun Club for $375. I love it and wouldn't give it up for anything! :)

A 4" S&W Model 19 with all the factory target goodies about 20 years ago. Alas, about two years later I was "between jobs" and we needed money for rent worse than I needed a .357, soooo... (I keep looking at used 19's, and may have to pick one up if the right deal comes along - the 66 just isn't the same.)
