.308 Win. for me. Dad's got a Remington 788 chambered in that cartridge, and I own a Savage 10FP. I think it's about the most accurate of the .30-caliber cartridges, and in my book accuracy is at the top of the heap when you're talking about hunting ANY game. But since we're talking about medium-sized game, then bullet energy and penetration isn't going to be that big a consideration.

Second choice in my book would be a tie: 7mm Rem. magnum or .270 Win.

.223 as I am a mid-brain shooter only.

I prefer military surplus and for my rifle have found the Austrian to be as capable as I can shoot from a comfortable sand bag, shooting bench with chair. In the field, of course, the rifle and cartridge are better than I will usually be able to utilize fully.

6.5x55 mm Swedish Mauser

Why it's so accurate that its bullets are best
described as "heat-seeking"!
Dependable, accurate, penetrating round that in
soft point delivers excellent bone-shattering
capability.
Has delivered one-shot drops so-far everytime.

I have and use the 7Mag & the 6.5X55 here in Texas but my favorite Texas deer rifle is the 250 Savage in my "Liberty" model 77 Ruger. I like the short action; deadly accuracy; and light recoil of this rifle. There's just something cool about being able to watch the animal go down through the scope after the shot.

6.5X55 Swede

For deer, it's excellent. I use the 156gr Norma ammo in my little 94 carbine in chaparrel cover in the foothills.
I was initially worried about overpenetration in deer, but turned out to not be a problem. 2 one shot kills in the last 2 yrs.

.303 British.

The 174gn Hornadys or 180gn Sierras or Speers for areas with a bit longer shooting range.

The 215gn Woodleighs or Hawks for those shorter shots in deep woods or thick brush when the ballistic medicine needs to be big, slow and final. :)

.375 H&H shoots flat hits hard mild recoil and you can eat right up to the hole. Just doesn't hardly do any meat damage. And I love the looks I get when I pull her out at the Praire dog town!

Another vote for the 7mm-08, great round, accurate, fast, loads 170 thru 100 gr bullets..... definately a midrange round, could take some large game witha great shot, accurate enough to take varmits. recoil is not tame but manageable....

7mm08. Great round, very accurate, mild kicking, good bullets, good short action rifles. 7mm08 doesn't have the history of some of the other rounds, but it is tops in my book. Good shooting, Weagle

6.5x55!

Gotta go with the 6.5x55 although I just got in and haven't actually killed anything, but paper with it!

"Heatseaking" would be a great way to describe the accuracy characteristics of my sporterized mauser 96!

7mm08 700 Rem Classic this year. I love it.
Good on groundhogs. Missed buck first day - my fault, not rifle!

Another vote for 7mm-08. Have already taken two deer with my Model Seven this season. First deer made it about 6 feet, the second one just laid down. Was using 120 grain Speer Spitzers. Shot one last year with the .30-06 and it ran 30 yards even with a beautiful heart/lung shot.

25.06, 7MM-08

Unluckily for me, everything here in Oklahoma seems to mid-sized, if that, so we tend to use 25.06, and 7MM-08 seems to be popular around this area.

The 308Win. is my favorite for several reasons.

1. It was chambered in the Browning BLR which is my favorite rifle.

2. The 308 is very accurate as a general rule in most rifles.

3. Recoil is less than the 30-06 or the 270 in my opinion but killing effect on game is just as good as long as the right bullets are used.

4. It can be had in a short action rifle which makes up into a lighter rifle.

5. Ammo is pretty cheap and can be found on sale quite often.

6. I presonally believe it is more accurate than the 30-06 in out of the box rifles and I also believe it hits game harder than the 270 at least that has been my expeirence and I have shot quite a few head of deer with the 270 which used to be my favorite for many years. However I will concede that this has only been true when using the right bullet of which my favorite is the Winchester 180grain Slivertip. I am sure there are other choices just as good but I have used this bullet a lot and I have a lot of confidence with it based on quiet a bit of use.
