First I am not a fan of 223 or 5.56 weapons. That being said when it comes to the point you have to defend your self then the nearest gun is sufficient. First I would study your states view on the CASTLE DOCTRINE. In Ky you're legally allowed to protect your home, conveyance (fancy word for transport even a bicycle) with lethal force if you are "in fear for my life".
I own several rifles (most are Warsaw Pact country production) but shotguns and handguns are probably better for home defence. Next to my bed is a Topper model 48 sawed off 12guage. (19 inches) loaded with number 4 buck shot. In the night stand are the following: Taurus 7shot .38, Rossi 6shot .357, and a S&W 459 9mm with 6 15 round mags. On my wifes side a .25 cal 7 shot titan, a 6 shot .22 revolver, and a Nagant 7.62x38 revolver.
This is assuming an intruder makes it past our doberman and pitbull, and a very surly foul mouthed parrot.
I hope no one on this forum ever has to take a shot with a loved one in the way.
