Would a Python be worth it?

I have yet to hear from someone who has a stable of quality revolvers and yet still thinks the Python is the greatest DA revolver.

That would be me. But I cheated: I don't have a grunge against the inflated prices. See, here in Venezuela a 27 will usually be priced the same, if not actually higher than a similar condition Python.

Curiosly, my second greatest would be the K22.

Everybody has his/hers own favorites... and some are even based on experience.

I recall when the Python was a "status" symbol in small town LE. Worst story ever heard was a Chief who loaned his to a new office until his revolver came in and told him to keep it oiled. New officer did, with vegetable oil in which his wife had fried fish.

At those prices, I wouldn't want a Python for any reason. Well, maybe if someone GAVE me one......then I would unload it as quickly as possible (for the cash). In my view, owning ANY hand gun worth over $1000 is simply risking too much - that someone else would covet it enough to steal. Besides, I might scratch such a gun.....and give myself a heart attack !:D

I sez: That is the plain O.D. truth! Been there dun that and know the feeling. THAT is one of the BEST things about stainless pistols! That scratch on a Browning BLR and my BHP.. would have to be hospitalised on the "special" section on the top floor of the hospital if the Python were to be scratched!

Chesster sez: "Worst story ever heard was a Chief who loaned his to a new office until his revolver came in and told him to keep it oiled. New officer did, with vegetable oil in which his wife had fried fish."
I sez: Did the Grand Jury indict the Chief or was it ruled "Justifiable Homicide"?

I had a Python some decades ago...it was a nice gun but it didn`t wow me like it does for some...

When I determine the value of different guns for myself...cost and durability are the top things I take into consideration....And when I use the above.... the GP100 ends up on the top of the list...you can buy 3 GP`s or more for what a new Python costs....if you could find one... and the GP will out last the Python if you actually intend shoot them and use full loads...

If you found a new Python it would be very expensive and not really the gun to shoot.... you would be destroying the value...

My GP100 has only needed minor trigger work and it shoots beautifully.

Second on the list would be the 686 but that would cost another 25%

I have had three Pythons. Still have one.I also have a six inch 19-3 that has a trigger that breaks like glass. I have a 686 that is just as good. I recently found a 1970 Colt Metropolitan which is the 38 special version of the Colt Lawman. The single action on the Metropolitan is almost indistinguishable from the Python. The double action is heavier but I only paid $350 for the Metro. That being said there are alternatives to the Python. If you just want a Python then you should get one. If you are looking for a shooter there are cheaper alternatives. Good luck.

It's kinda sad how many people approach things (like Pythons) solely from a utilitarian, functionality, and cost tradeoff perspective while trivializing or completely ignoring things like design beauty, craftsmanship, and engineering ingenuity.
