Why should i get a CWP?

It keeps your options open. Is it inconceivable to you that you might want a sidearm on your person at some time? Might you ever be threatened by someone, or be called to help a friend stranded in a bad part of town, or encounter a shady character at a highway rest stop? If you have the permit, you have the option of legally arming yourself. And then you might find yourself carrying more than you now expect.

I'm a fairly new gun owner, and my interest in firearms came through a desire to be able to protect my wife and myself. I became more and more aware of seemingly increasing violent crime around me. I got my weapons carry license and carry every day. When I put on my pants, I put on my gun along with my wallet, keys, phone and knife. My perspective may be skewed, but I can't understand why any intelligent person who is not afraid of guns (especially a gun owner/enthusiast) WOULDN'T get their carry license and carry a gun all the time. You can't anticipate when you might need it, and if you do need it, you'll need it RIGHT THEN!

You have received a number of good responses. Posts 5, 6 and 26 particularly resonated with me.

Can you imagine the impact on State Houses and DC pols if every gun owner joined the NRA and applied for his CHL/CCW/whatever you call it in your state?

My best advice is to take the Concealed weapons class because it will educate you more about laws, benefits, and process of being able to carry a concealed weapon.

Personally I suggest you should get it anyway, if you were on the fence before. Even if you don't need it, its good to have the license to conceal carry. You don't always have to carry, but the more you do, the more you'll get used to it. Eventually you'll feel naked and unprotected without your firearm.

More importantly, its a Constitutional right to bear arms. having a firearm is also the best self defense weapon you can have no matter if you are a man, woman, an older (senior) individual, or handicapped.

Well I don’t and right now don’t see I need for it.

The "need" for it isn't necessaryly based on your general secure life style (as you see it) or the way it's been up to now.

The "need" can happen in an instant at a time and place chosen by those who would make you their victim. When that time comes, what you thought will make no difference.

OK, lecture over.

Although NV has an open carry law, I still like to ba able to come home with my gun in my pocket incase of a home invasion which is on the rise here in Vegas.

1) Because I can and because I think it's a good way to be "counted" when it comes to our 2a rights.

2) Take any ambiguity out of traveling with firearms... The vehicle breakdown example is perfect.

3) You can't open-carry in our local state and county parks and open spaces... You must CC if you carry.

Get it when you feel you might need it.

Every time I felt I needed it, it was too late to run get it. Like I said some where else, I lived 29.25 years without ever actually needing it. In the last 6 or 8 months I've needed it twice.

If I had waited for conformation of my need I might not be typing tonight. It is an insurance policy. When the need arises you will be covered. It is a lot like car insurance, health insurance, and home owner's insurance. It helps life return to normal when it suddenly get real unbalanced.

IMHO "Every person" that can legally possess a weapon should be carrying it.

I can think of loads of people who can legally obtain a license that I don't want anywhere near a gun. And folk who might post that may be on my list.

MLeake nailed it on page 1 and the OP was sold by PP2.

I think you make a valid and important point or two though

1). A concealed pistol is not for when you think you'll need a gun. It's for when you think you won't. If I thought I needed a gun to go somewhere- I'm not a macho tough guy- I wouldn't go there. And if I had no choice but to go there, I'd take a rifle

2). I don't "need" to be protected against unreasonable search and seizure at this instant. I also do not "need" my due process rights at this moment. Should I agree to not be able to access them?

Ok I am still in the process of looking for a gun and most people I talked to asked me do I have my CWP yet? Well I don’t and right now don’t see I need for it. My question is why should I get one? I don’t plan to carry it with me but maybe I am not looking at it at all angles. Also I talked to a retired military guy and he told me to get it not because they are trying to make it harder to get them, anyone heard of that? Please help.

If you don't want it why the hell ask people on the web you don't even know, Dont get it. For all we know your are a mass murderer.

The question isn't why should you; it's why shouldn't you? As a gun owner, the more rights you exercise, the better off gun owners as a whole are.

In Washington state and iirc some others, there is no handgun waiting period for permit holders.
The only other reason is because you want one.

If I may chime in:

I'm not going to get my CWP for the usual reason. I live in a really low crime area and the crime that does happen is almost never strangers threatening the lives of other strangers, unless it's in a bar over a lady. Even that is pretty rare.

Anyway, I plan to get my CWP because:
  • It provides a sensible choice for a first training course - I don't have to choose between SD and HD, for one thing; once I have my CWP I will know more about what my second course should be
  • Crime rates may spike at any time
  • As others have mentioned, it helps all gun owners - the number of CWP holders will be greater so those who would do us will have more people to intimidate / disarm / chase away before the achieve the unarmed
  • It simplifies transport of weapons.

Hey Buzzcook:

I'll be back home in Washington in August for a couple weeks. Do you know if my Florida CCW will exempt me from Washington's waiting period while I'm there? I know there is reciprocity, just not sure if it covers the purchase of a gun in the reciprocating state.

If I were not going to carry it, I would not spend a couple of days, and about $250 to get what I have no use for.
