Why should i get a CWP?

Also, some LEO's choose to get a CCW even though they can carry under LEOSA and it isn't necessary.

This is usually to get around harsh departmental regulations regarding off duty carry.

To the original question:

I lived 29.25 years without needing one. In the last six months I've needed it twice to stop robberies. Both times the assailants were threatening to use lethal force and brandishing their own weapon. One was a pocket knife and the other was a tire iron.

You never know when the moment will come, or if it will. It is better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Also, on a much less dramatic note. It simplifies purchasing and transporting.

I AM SOLD lol i knew if i asked i would get some great answers. Now i am trying to see where and what CWP to get. I live in SC and they have a reciprocity with these states (Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.) but not GA but if i get the FL permit i can carry in GA if needed.

I first got my CCW so I could transport guns back and forth to the range without having to worry about them being loaded or locked inthe trunk seperate from my ammo. I go tired of removing the rounds from my Home Defense pistol and locking it seperate from the ammo. With a CCW I could either carry it on my hip or in my car next to me in my range bag, loaded or unloaded.

Then I realized that it might be good to carry anyway.

In my part of the world you can't buy a handgun without one. Some stores won't even show you one without a permit or sell you handgun ammo.

If you travel with a gun in your car, even if legal without a CCL, what happens when you break down and maybe have to hike a few miles or hitch a ride to the off-ramp?Sure would be nice to carry a pistol concealed. That's why I first got my CCL.

Not as likely these days with cell phones but you never know.

I kind of went through the same debate myself. I got my permit last year. Even if you don't plan to carry everyday all the time, it gives you options.
I also have a passport. Not because I currently have plans to leave the country, but because if an opportunity or a need arises, I have the ability to respond to it. A CCP gives you the option to carry should your day to day needs change. plus it saves a few bucks at gun purchase time.

As a fellow SC person with a CWP, get it...

You'll spend less than 200 bucks(class, ammo, and the 50$ SLED charge), and it makes getting a gun a 5 minute encounter, and you'll also find yourself carrying everywhere you legally can..

I got mine a year ago, and I carry about 90% of the time that I am not at work..

Why not? Speeds up the purchasing process, makes it easier to transport legally, and so forth.

For me, above all of that, is cost. When I get mine, it is $50, then $25 renewal once every 5 years. This is less expensive than getting a handgun permit, which is $15 a year. I am getting mine at the end of the month, as is my wife.

Even if you don't carry, it is more than that... it is basically a "super permit to purchase" as well in many States.

I obtained my CCW after I was required to defend myself against charges made by a politically connected developer who was using elements of the SO and a member of the County Board of Supervisors to force me from my home.

Had I not been a CCW holder, I would have been charged with illegally carrying concealed because my jacket had slipped over the butt of my pistol while I was hunting.

A CCW eliminates technical violations which can be used by over zealous law enforcement officers.

Get the CCW it is cheaper than hiring a lawyer.

I hear Florida is the way to go, they're the most recognized. That'll be one of very few good things you'll hear me say about Florida!

I also have a need to carry in GA, so the FL CCW works well for me.

I currently live in Florida but I'm doing everything I can to move back to Washington State STAT. When I do, I will maintain my Florida permit as it will allow me to carry in many more states than Washington's will, but Washington's laws within the State of Washington are much more lose than most others.

As a pilot, the ability to carry in multiple states is important to me.

I've had guns for almost 30 years now. I've only had my Concealed Carry permit for about 3 years. Get it when you feel you might need it.

Where I live(d) they wouldn't issue a CCW permit. Unless you transport cash or own a business in the city, or have a job requirement for it, no dice. Even though my permit is a Class A license to carry high capacity firearms, they put a restriction on it- no concealed carry. Now I live in another town, and you know what? When I renew I will be doing lots to get that restriction removed. Why? Why the heck not? I'm law abiding, I have as clean- or cleaner- record as any cop in any town in the USA, bar none. My fingerprints were on file (job requirement) with the Feds years before I got an FID, let alone an LTC. I hold an FFL. I don't hurt people, I don't cause trouble, I'm a considerate, articulate, responsible adult. Why should I not have that permit with no restrictions?

Wait until somebody tells you that you somehow ain't good enough to have it, brother. Sure as shinola doesn't come out of a goose you'll want it then

you never Know

I am in my 50's now, the only time that I felt that I need a weapon was when I was in the military (got out at the end of 91) I live in the farthest west part of Texas, I can see Mexico and New Mexico from my back yard. for some strange reason, I do not know why, I feel that I need one (CHL), and have applied, that does not mean that I will carry, but I have the choice. Get it. You will have a choice / option to do so if you want to carry.:o

Since you are interested in the CCW laws of other states and/or how the other state's laws interact with SC, check out this site:

www.handgunlaw.us

I always plug this site, but it just has a lot of info + it is an easy website to work with.

It's a clever way for the gov't to infringe on the second amendment while getting even more "taxes" and meanwhile you're supposed to feel more "worthy" of having second amendment rights.

Having said all that, I have one, costs me $65 the first time and another $50 every 4 years (Oregon) but I hate all the subterfuge and restrictiveness. I feel very blessed compared to Kalifornia.

Knowledge is power. The class is about more than just having a card that says you can legally concealed carry, it teaches you about most situations you could encounter with a gun and how it relates to you legally. Go for it.

Because you can!

On a purely political note, it is my opinion that the more of us that carry legally the less likely it is that our right to carry will be challenged. Further more, if we become a large enough statistic perhaps Cook County will knuckle under and end Illinois' egregious status as the ONLY state in the Union which absolutely bans concealed carry by civilians. Yes, I know Springfield is where the honchos make state laws, but most of them are from no-guns-allowed Chicago.

Well i am not 100% sure i am getting a CWP now. everyone gave me alot of good reasons to have one and i now know why i need one.
