Why should i get a CWP?

Ok I am still in the process of looking for a gun and most people I talked to asked me do I have my CWP yet? Well I don’t and right now don’t see I need for it. My question is why should I get one? I don’t plan to carry it with me but maybe I am not looking at it at all angles. Also I talked to a retired military guy and he told me to get it not because they are trying to make it harder to get them, anyone heard of that? Please help.

Even if you don't plan to carry...

It's not a terrible idea. Some jurisdictions are making it more difficult to get them and "shall-issue" or not I believe you can be denied based on something as arbitrary the sheriff's mood that day.

However, should you get one, going for mine this Saturday, it can streamline the purchasing process quite a bit. Still gotta do the 4473, but most dealers will pass on the NICS check if you have a valid permit and you can walk out with your shiny new boomstick same day.

Reasons to get a CWP, off the top of my head:

First, on principle -

1) Because you can, and in most places in this world that is not true.

2) Because the more permit-holders there are, the less likely it is that politicians will think Gun Control is a viable political platform.

3) Because rights not exercised tend to atrophy.

Next, for practical reasons -

1) It simplifies the issue of transporting a pistol to and from wherever you normally use it. (SC isn't difficult, but try transporting a handgun in an SUV in a state that requires transportation in an isolated compartment... and ask for local PD's interpretation of what that entails...)

2) If you ever find yourself in a scenario where you wish you could legally carry, you won't kick yourself because you haven't even started the application process.

3) Application costs, even if one includes a training class, are typically less than the cost of a pair of hiking boots, shorts, and a moisture-wicking shirt from REI, for example; for those who are less outdoors-inclined, the net cost is typically less than two or three dinner dates at a decent restaurant - and the CWP is good for several years.

ok well i am on the fence with it right now. i do not have a SUV or truck right now but plan on getting on in the near future so i guess that can be an issue?? i will look into the riding laws. I dont see myself carrying one unless i feel there might be some danger like if i am out of town or shopping around christmas?? I guess i need to know where i can and cant carry at also. thanks for the replies.

It's a nice thing to have in my state because you can buy your pistol and not have to wait to actually possess it. I don't know the specifics in SC, so it may not matter to you.

As an aside, do you not feel comfortable with the idea of carrying, or is it just that you don't feel you'll ever need to?

I'm one of those guys who makes a strong effort to carry all the time, it's not always possible or appropriate, but I do my best. I'm so used to it now that if I don't have a pistol with me I feel like I forgot something.

Right now I don’t feel the need but i know when i buy something i want it that day and not a few days later lol I am like a kid.

Next question I have if I was to buy one at a gun show the only way i can leave with it is with a CWP? Is that different or the same as buying it from a gun store.

SC CWP

Jonesh529,
In S.C., if you buy a handgun or long gun from a licensed firearms dealer, a form 4473 has to be filled out and a call made to the FBI NICS system. The sale can either be approved, delayed or denied. If you possess a CWP the form has to be filled out but no call need be made and the sale can proceed. For sales between private individuals, no formal procedures are required, only an honest effort to make sure the buyer is 18 years old and is allowed to own or possess a firearm and for a handgun, is a resident of S.C. A CWP does reduce the worry that an action or location may or may not be covered. Your CWP class will explain all the ins and outs. You may carry a loaded handgun in any closed console (center console, glove compartment, etc,) of your vehicle with out a CWP. Bill

With all of the clamoring for various types of ID that are needed for all sorts of things ( and unfortunately, I'm sure that more is coming,) it doesn't hurt to show that you have an ID showing that you've been cleared through a criminal background check.

Believe me, if you can, you should. Never take this right for granted. Living in a city where it is almost impossible to get makes me realize how lucky others are...

Probably not !!!

I'm having a problem with this post, for if you can't come up with a reason why you should, I sure as heck can't come up with one for you. Besides being a serious decision, it's a personal and private one. Kind of like whether or not one should get married. .... ;)

There are folks who are carrying that should not and there are those who are not carrying and should. But then again, that is only by my measure of what I am seeing. ..... ;)
There are always consequences from the deicisions we make and this is certainly yours to make. Personally, I want to see more good guns, in the street as the bads ones have too much ground .....

Be Safe !!!

Pahoo

I am trying to see if there is something i didnt know or didnt think about and yes i have recieved that. i will get it but i dont know how much i will carry

Here in Omaha Ne. A concealed permit means I do not have to register a hand gun with the authorities. If I buy one within the city limits that means I can walk out the door and not have to take the paperwork downtown, register the weapon and then return to the store to pick it up.

That was reason enough for me. No one in the city needs to know what or how many I have.

As far as carrying... That is an individual decision. Whether I carry or not is my decision and not some one else who thinks I should just because I can.

i got my ccw a week and a half ago. im currently still a full time college student so for the most part 70% of my normal day is spent on campus where carrying would result in a felony charge if i was caught. however the ease of purchasing a new firearm, not having to worry about where in my car i can have my pistols while going to the range, and carrying it the other 30% of the time made it worth it to get for me. personally i think it is worth it to get if your eligible for it no matter who you are. just my 2 cents

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

Even if you don't plan on carrying right now, I would still recommend getting it. As others have stated, it eliminates wait time if you are going to purchase another firearm. Otherwise you would have to go the Sherriff's dept. and wait a few days for a permit that only allows you to buy ONE handgun. With the CWP, you could go in and purchase as many as you wanted and not have to wait. Another consideration would be if you ever plan to travel out of town or out of state. As long as the other states have reciprocity with yours, you can carry in other states. You can find this out on http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry_permit_reciprocity_maps.html

It's your God given right

it might help protect you if you ever travel w/your weapon(like out of state, or at least it will allow you to carry it less restrictively sometimes).

Also I talked to a retired military guy and he told me to get it not because they are trying to make it harder to get them, anyone heard of that?

there is no gurantee you'd be "grandfathered" if the laws for your CWP became more harsh, but there is a chance. Sometimes it is harder to gain an initial certification, license, etc. Once you receive it, you are renewing it everytime. I say get it, but there is no real right answer here. You can do either. Some people might say, "Nah, why pay the 50 bucks when I don't need it?" I say just get it and hold onto it. I helped my wife get hers: she had to take a firearms safety course one saturday. She has since received her CCW permit. She'll never have to take that course again; paperwork and fifty bucks every five yrs from here on out. She still hasn't exercised her CCW rights, butshe can if she chooses to. Also, some LEO's choose to get a CCW even though they can carry under LEOSA and it isn't necessary. Many just continue to renew their current CCW. My advice is to get it unless you absloutely no you will never have a need for it.

I don't plan on carrying all the time either, but I went out and did the paper work for my CCW yesterday.

The REASON YOU SHOULD GET ONE is it simply takes 99% of the guess work out of transporting your gun from A to B. Yes the permit dictates you use discretion, yes it comes with a expectation of responsibility and humility, but those are all good things if you ask me.

Not only that, what other country on this earth allows their citizens to carry firearms? The list is short, take advantage of the rights you have...

As far as whether you'll need it or not? I tell the same thing to new private pilots when they're debating getting their instrument rating. They may not plan on using it very often, but they'll sure be glad to have it when they need it.
