Why Should I Buy a Glock

M16:

Believe it or don't, s'truth. Not only have none of my 4 G23's ever jammed, neither has my G29 or G33. Also, the only Glock kB! I've ever seen w/my own eyes was a tired G19 with the original recoil spring that suffered early unlocking with a round of 9mm subgun ammo. The shooter, a certified Glock armorer, broke down the gun, looked it over, reassembled it, and resumed shooting.

I'm not some sort of Glock propagandist. I've owned, and do own, many other types of pistol, including several 1911s of various styles ofer the years. Heck, my favorite handgun is the P7M8, not the Glock. The Glock is just the dull, utilitarian tool I carry every day because I trust it to go *bang* every time I pull the trigger and shoot where I point it. I'd be the last to tell everyone they *must* carry, or even own, a Glock. What a dull world such conformity would create. Use what works for you, practice to become proficient with it, and remember that these are pistols and not religious denominations- there's no 'one true path to enlightenment' here...

BTW, I have had 2 ammo related stoppages on my own reloads: one dud primer, one squib load. Both were the fault of the bimbo operating the reloader, not the pistol. Besides, since both of those resulted in a normal-looking pistol with the slide closed, I still don't know what a jammed Glock looks like... :D

I'm with Tecolote on this one. :D Get yourself
a Sig P229. Why drive a Cadillac; when you can drive a Rolls Royce? :)If you don't want
a Sig; then get yourself a Browning Hi-Power
Practical model in .40S&W!!!

I'm not going to convince you of crap.

Your mind is made up - Glocks suck.

They're ugly. Crappy trigger pull. Goofy goal post sights. Plastic frame. Ugly finish. And besides, those Glocks shoot to point of aim. Wouldn't you miss trying to adjust those sights over an dover again?

You don't get to tweak them like your 1911s. Man, don't you like your local gunsmith?
With only 30 somthing parts, you can do the repairs yourself. But that would be selfish, how is Bud going to support his family without your income to his gunsmithing business?

And how are you ever going to practice basement gunsmithing on these stupid Glocks.
And what in the sHELL was my local police department, state troopers, the FBI, DEA, CIA, DOD, DOE, DOI, EPA, ATF, Customs, and other federal agencies thinking when they bought Glock?

They must have been abolutely stupid. Must of been the cheap price Glock gave them!

Man, I am so glad I hate Glocks. You should too. They really suck big weenies.

Remember - Glocks suck and you would never want one. You're a tried and true 1911 buff. Paying less than $750 for a gun offends you.
And what would your friends say about you carrying one of those polymer thangs.

Oh my . . .

Run and never say the word Glock again.

Now I can buy that Glock 22,Glock 27, Glock 35, or Glock 23 for my collection. I' m lazy. I hate to clean my guns. I shoot cheap Russian ammo, and gosh darn it. I am so tired of shooting sub 1" groups at 25 yards.

If you only knew how easy it is to stick the Glock 27 in the waistband of your jeans and let it sit there all day, hardly remembering it is there, but still having the peace of mind that you can take care of business should the need arise. Now the 1911, how long can that be on your side and you forget abouty it? I think about a nanosecond. I have both. I prefer to carry the Glock 27, but still like my 1911.

Sounds like you don't want a Glock though. Don't buy one. Buy one of those new Springfield ultra-compacts or a Para .40. Heck the options are endless.

What's a jamb? ;)

Glocks like anything made by man can and do fail. I had a second generation Glock 19 that wouldn't feed any type of JHP no matter what. I had a third generation Glock 19 that never once gave me a problem. If you like Glocks buy more and shoot them often. (They deserve your business for standing up to HUD.) They don't work for me because they don't fit my hand, point poorly for me, and balance badly for me. They just might be the cat's meow for you, however.

So many pistols, so little money.

If you do end up getting a glock, I agree, avoid the .40S&W. Most Kb! are in the .40 due to the HORRIBLE barrel tolerance, as evidenced by the brass bulge compared to Sigs. Sigs are by far the sweetiest guns to shoot.

Might I recommend a Steyr M40 if you are looking for a 40? It's more glock than a glock. I'm waiting for the M357's to ship. But the Steyrs have all the glock goodies, (simplicity, use of use) plus they have an external safety if you so choose to use it, a lock down feature, and cool triangular sights. Tenifer finish, polymer handle (without that weird grip bulge that feels so uncomfortable) lower axis bore compared to a glock, and it's Austrian as well. What more can you ask for except maybe Claudia Shaffer to go with it...

The Red One,

Keep stuffing that little Model 27 in the waist band of your jeans. Eventually, you will get that long awaited try out with the Vienna Boys Choir. Why? Glocks are meant to be carried in holsters and are unsafe to carry in the Mexican Carry Mode.

Back to the question, Glock triggers do take a long time for an experienced shooter to adapt to. Once you learn to adapt to its trigger they are totally reliable.

Richard

I love the point made about all the government agencies that issue the Glock. It reminds me of the government buying claw hammers for $600 each. sub-inch groups at 25 yards from a Glock? Maybe so, buy I'd have to see that to believe it. Are we talking one shot groups here? I own five Glocks and the only one I like is my Model 20 10mm. And the reason I like it is because it is a 10mm. I do give the Glock credit for having the best finish and the price is decent. Reliabilty in my opinion is no better or worse than say the Sigs, HKs etc. Now if HK would put that tenifer finish on the P7M8 that would be the ultimate 9mm.

I handled a number of Glocks, and didn't like the feel. Kept reading more and more about reliability, etc. and bought a .40S&W. Did not reload for the pistol, never had a KB. Did add a .357SIG Bar-Sto barrel, and a long slide ported upper. Very reliable, reasonable accuracy. I fired about 2500 rounds through the various combinations, and never got used to the feel of the grip or of the trigger. Traded the whole thing in and got another 1911, which I am very fond of.

I like Glock's. It did take a long time to get proficient with it. I don't much care for the .40sw. If you're afraid of these Glock KB's go get a Sig 226/229. They may make you put your 1911's aside for a while. Don't have experience with the Steyr, cool sights though. Glock's are great combat weapons. I have seen my SEAL buddies putting .45 bullets(G21) in or close to the same hole at ten yards, instinctive shooting(NO AIMING). Well to be fair they did it with Sigs, and an HK USP also. You should of seen what they did with repeated double taps.

Well, boys and girls you have done well, take a bow. Of the 28 replies only one cranky reply and it wasnt that bad either. It appears that the general consensus is to forego the Glock 40 caliber altogether. Thats fine I can do that. I dont Need another handgun but that is not the point.

I want a 40 caliber and if its not a Glock then it looks like Sig is up next. Since I shoot lead reloads 99% of the time maybe I should forget the Glock. I'm not a Glock hater but I dont love it either. I have tried the Glock and it just does not work for me, some folks might have a hard time with that, but thats why there are Fords and Chevys too.

I thank you all for you replies and will continue to ponder this 40 thing a bit more. There's an evil gunshow in town today, I think I need to make a run, my bride is on a cleaning tear and I need to give her some well deserved space.

Okay guys (and ladies)...

I didn't see anyone suggest one, so I will...

HKUSP40 or 40C!

I had a Glock 27 for a while, and liked the lightweight polymer, but missed my safety, and didn't like the trigger pull. So I looked around until I stumbled across the HK, which does have the safety, external hammer, cocked and locked option, and a much more "real gun" trigger pull than the capgun feel (personal opinion) of the Glock. I traded my 27 for a USP45, and have never regretted it. I've currently got a USP40C on layaway as well, because I just love the feel and confidence of the HK's.

Glock is a great gun, dependable, widely used, etc.... but I grew up being told that external hammers were the only way to have a gun, and my first pistol was a Taurus PT100, so I can't STAND the "no manual safety" and internal hammer of the Glock.

HKUSP40 or 40compact.

Just a personal opinion, so check one out for yourself...

Jamb is a place for your door.

Jam either goes on bread or happens to non-Glocks.

Did I mention that my 10mm Glock's rear sight never came off. Hard to believe that someone shooting a fairy round like 9mm would have their sight fly off.

Maybe you shouldn't?

Try em and see if you like em; some don't. They be wundebar for most, not all.

Seen lottsa people who shoot em fine except under pressure, one handed, weak side, one-handed weak side, from odd positions, etc when they have no trouble w everything else.

Just get a BHP in 40? Very nice, and you are used to it. Or a 1911 in 10mm, and you can shoot 40 and 357 SIG too?

A USP might be a tad more familiar too. I like the compacts best of all the new wunderguns.

The largest (and toughest T&E) federal contract for 40 pistols and ammo to date is the INS/BP for Beretta Brigadiers and Rem/Fed 155 JHPs. Kicked Glock and SIGs butt in reliability during the T&E. They issue the Beretta, approve the SIG as an option. Liked the Berettas enough to renew the contract. When they wanted a smaller gun for plainclothes agents, they bought USP compacts, passing over the SIG and Glock again.

The feds have lottsa money and do some extensive T&Es.
There are about 65,000 armed federal agents (not military) and most carry Beretta 9/40s, with SIGs close behind.

Most (80%) PDs in this country have less than 20 officers, shoestring budgets, do little if any _real_ T&E, and carry Glocks.

Does this really mean anything? Who knows? :)

What would be the point? If you don't think you need a Glock, you obviously don't! I never try to convince someone they need any gun, if they're not already convinced, they don't need it.

The Glock idea is history. Went to the evil gunshow and bought a Glock #27 and five boxes of PMC and out the door. Called a young officer I work with and hit the home range to road test this beast.

The accuarcy is unacceptable, the grip is a joke, and the trigger pull is beyond description, I dont like it, not even a little bit. I really tried to like this thing, but it does not work for me. I tried the M 19 the other officer carries and it was no better.

I have always told the young officers to shoot and carry what they are the most proficient with, be it a Glock, Sig, S&W or Colt. It makes no difference what brand it is as long as the shooter can shot it well. I am a better shooter than the Glock will allow me to be. I can shoot rings around this thing with my Colt 1911 or any of my S&W revolvers and I see no reason to comprimise that just for the sake of owning a Glock.

The young officer I was shooting with had never shot a 1911, so I gave him one of mine to try, I am telling you now, he did so well and so much better with the Colt that he tried to buy it from me, and then wanted to know if the gunshow was still going on, he is going to trade off his Glock 19. I told him to keep the Glock, and get a 1911 if thats what he wanted and I offered the use of one of mine for as long as he wanted it.

Thanks for the time you all took to reply, I think I already have what I need, and will be trading this 27 off real soon. I'll be looking to get a Colt made up in a 40SW.

I own HP's, 1911's (full and compact), S&W revolvers, a Mak, Colt Govt. .380, Colt 1903 .32, a Daewoo .380, a Sig 239 in .357, and a model G19 and G36. I just spent two weeks trying to fix a jammming problem with my full size 1911 after a KB. I have a Colt officer and a Kimber ultra elite that I carry as my primary carry guns, but these require constant tweeking. This may change after spending some time with the G36. Why you would want a .40 caliber is your business. All I know is that I took out my G19 after not having shot it in a month and ran 100 rounds through it without a hitch and made one ragged hole. I have lost track of the thousands of rounds through it since 1988. Eats anything you feed it. Put 100 rounds through the G36 with the same result. No gun shoots like my Glocks out of the box. None! Ugly, square pistols that just do what I ask of it every time. Easy to clean and few parts to misplace. I will admit that they are not the first guns I show to my friends, but if you made me choose only one gun, it would be one of the Glocks. (If they made the Mak in 9x19 or .45, now that would be one tough choice) ;)

Sigs are nice. Especially the P226 and P220. The P239 is a little pocket rocket. Watches aren't the only good things the Swiss make!
