Why not the .22Mag

Welp, I checked out Remington's site and looked up the 597 Magnum.

5 minutes later, I called my dealer and asked her to get me one in synthetic/stainless. You guys don't want to know how much (little) I'm paying for it. It should arrive next Monday or Tuesday.

Just what I needed... another rifle. Damn you, Kevin! :D

ps: $20 rebate on all 597s bought until the end of June. That'll get a couple-three boxes of ammo. ;)

LMAO Coinnech you poor guy. Let me say you are getting the best .22Mag autoloader That I have seen. It has curves like a beautiful Woman. Feels dreat in your hand. Good site picture.... Hmm I need to go guys. I uhh.. see ya.

Copy of some of what I sent to CCI some time ago.

The Maxi Mag +V shows what can be done with the .22mag.
The Aguila cartridge reviewed below also proves that point.
Compared to the .22LR, the 22mag might be improved enormously.
The opportunity exists for CCI to take advantage of it being "only"
a .22 by slipping under the coming ammo restrictions with a .22 mag.
(.22mag handguns already beat the .38 in energy and if the .22 mag
can be improved as much as the .22LR, then it could beat the 9mm!)

Among rifle ammo there is a huge gap between the .22 rimfires and
the smallest centerfire at 100 yards: 180 ft lbs (50-grain Federal 957)
versus 1420 ft lbs from the 22-250 (40-gr Federal P22250V).
The .22mag, if improved like the .22LR, could decrease that gap
with a 50-grain boat tail delivering over 300 ft lbs at 100 yards.
THAT would make it a serious hunting round!

I would prefer a hot .22mag in a 50-grain boat tail since it retains
velocity and energy much better down range. I admit to evaluating
ammo from a hunting viewpoint rather than just punching holes in
a paper target. Remington's 33grain PR22M1 V-Max Boat Tail
though starting at 2000fps, may lose more by 100 yards than a
50grain BT which could be superior at 200 yards. The shorter bullet
may not be able to bring out the full potential of the boat tail design.

The 22-250 is one of the big boys of .224 caliber centerfires. A much better energy comparison would be a .22hornet and the .22 mag.

I have to say I love my Mossberg "Chuckster". Easy sub 1" 10 shot groups at 100 yards. I do wish the ammo was about $3/50 though instead of $6/50.

Willy I have a Chuckster that I picked up at a gun show for $70. Great shooter. Do you know when this gun was produced? Mine doesnt have a serial number on it anywhere that I've been able to find. I wouldnt mind having a small pistol chambered for this round either.

One thing to make note of Coinneach. The 597 is a Wonderful rifle. BUT.. It is perhaps the hardest weapon te reassemble that I have ever had the displeasure of working on. It took me about an hour the first time I tired to put it back together. THe problem is the dual recoil Guides. on the Mag Model they have have dual recoil springs over them (one inside the other then both slip over the rod) Now this isn't so bad right? WRONG! the springs are about 4 inches long and you only have about an inch and a half to work with. So you must work them into the bolt and then over the rod at an angle as you feed it in without getting them kinked up. It is kind of like trying to thread a needle while wearing heavy winter ski Gloves. But it gets easier after a couple times.. Sorta.

TOTALLY AGREE WITH KEVIN! (yes, I know its all CAPS :))

DOCSpanky,

You didn't MOVE did you (when you were spoiling aforementioned jerk's concentration)?

I was thinking exactly what most of you are saying.
My hunting area keeps shrinking. The rimfires are much more acceptable in these areas.
I have a Marlin 25mn that I only have about 200 bucks in total. I put a BSA 3-9 scope on mine. I really like this gun.
For my uses, the .22 mag is the perfect round.
BTW I really like the 22lr version of the 597. Yes, a bi&&h to reassemble the first couple of times, but what a great gun overall.

And if you hear from my Louise, won't you tell her I love her so?

Gopher,
I am not sure of the production dates of the Chuckster. I do know that it is in the 1969 Gun Digest book. I couldn't find a serial number on mine, either. I will keep looking for the dates.

And for ammo choices, here is a great page:

It seems some folks have tried. See this thread over at reloading and the link therein.[/quote]

While some people tinker around with it, it's not a very realistic option for volume ammo production. I can load centerfire ammo that's better than factory, I can't do that with rimfire.

Wow! A production gun without a serial number? How could "they" possibly allow that to go onto the market? Where do I get one?

Can anyone tell me what other autoloading .22 mag rifles are available, besides the 597 Rem and the 10/22 mag Ruger?

Marlin makes a fine 22mag auto!

I've that Marlin semi-auto .22 mag - the 922M. I'm really pleased with it. It has fed reliably any and all and the hottest ammo from about eight different loads from different manufacturers. There is no blowback of gas or burnt powder. I can close the action on either an empty or full chamber. One complaint though. The puny FIVE-ROUND magazines. Sheesh! Now if somebody could come up with a drum with the capacity of a brick - 500 rounds ought to be enough for a few minutes of shooting

Marlin has redone their webpages and dang but they load slower than molasses in January!

Semi Auto wise those are the only 3 I know of. I think the Rem is the best of the 3 followed by the Ruger then the Marlin. I think the ruger is a lot more expensive than the others and the Marlin is the cheapest. You really cant' go wrong with any of them though.
