Why must everything be sugarcoated?

Yeah, the people we are at war with do hate us, but comments like that will make the entire population there hate us. If the entire population hates us, we will get no cooperation from them. If we have no cooperation from them, we will start having way more casualties. Most Americans are not offended by his comments because they are not politically correct. They are offended because we are trying to gain the trust of a population, and his comments are at the very least not helpful. I understand what he is saying, but I think many of the Afghan people will not.

Just for the sake of argument, how do you know this ? I personally have no idea, but find it interesting. In my own mind I would think that if the people of that country really wanted democracy and a change in their current government, they would be happy that someone is happy to help them achieve this. And by the same token be happy their enemies are being killed, because of: Secondly my imagination of the Afgan people would be someone a lot closer to the situation than the American people. I imagine them to be far less shocked by the sight of a dead body, the aftermath of a car bomb etc. I imagine that they have seen this kind of thing first hand and are nearly as sensitive as Americans.
I also have to wonder how many societies of the world talk a bunch of BS instead of saying what everyone knows you mean ?

Just some random thoughts. I don't know the answer to any of them.

Rascism in the sense that this attitude prevails that it's ok to shoot "towel****s" and brown people.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the women being slapped around by the referenced "towel heads" as you call them, are brown. Why would that racist bastard care about brown women's rights and freedom? Oh yeah, cause the statement had nothing to do with race.

I was speaking of the American people. I don't what all Americans are thinking, but it seems rational to believe many would think his comments would make the operation in Afghanistan more difficult. All that I'm saying is that comments like that are easily spun and used as propaganda to recruit terrorist. Not everyone would agree, but propaganda is a very powerful tool.

Calling a "spade" a "spade"

JEEZUZ H. KEE-RIMMINY, GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!!!!

Unforutnately, I have never experienced combat as has the good General.
I can easily see how combat would be an invigorating, intense and yes - FUN (provided, of course, one didn't get pieces blown off that one needs).

As the General said, "I love brawling." Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't this be precisely the outlook we would want to see in EVERY Marine, Soldier, Sailor and Airman???

Note to neutered, panty-wearing, socialist/leftist girlie men and man hating leftist/socialist ballstomping Birkenstock-wearing she-bulls: A Marine's job is to seek out, close with and KILL THE ENEMY.

Why? So that all of you who HATE Marines can live in the America you hate as FREE CITIZENS who are not in fear for your miserable lives from THE ENEMY that the Marines have gone forth to kill FOR YOUR BENEFIT.

The General's sin was this: He dared to call a "spade" a "spade," plain and simple.

Can't be said often enough.

It's funny how outspoken people are on message boards compared to in person. :D

Who hates marines?

No, the general's sin was to make retarded comments that will be responded with more insurgents and suicide bombers. I recently heard of a beheading video that started out with a comment very similiar to this one. Why would they add that in their propaganda execution videos if these comments don't work against coalition troops?

Hatred is akin, I think, to pregnancy. You are either pregnant or you're not...you either hate someone or something or you don't. Its not a state of mind or being given to half measures or ambivalent attitudes. It is the stuff of raw emotions.

That being said, our enemies in the world of Islamofascism hate us, period. They hate us for innumerable, insoluable reasons...our multi-cultural, ethnic and religious system, our insistence on equalty for women, our permissive, degenerate society, MTV, viagra, fast food etc...yada, yada, yada.

There is probably a specific target of hatred associated with us for each calander day of their year. If you accept that hatred is a constant then you must accept that they can hate us no more nor no less, regardless of what we do or do not do, say or do not say; only continue to hate us until we are dead, no more.

Refraining from speaking the truth in the plainest form possible will not cause them to suddenly stop hating us.
In fact, refraining from speaking the truth is a form of appeasement and weakness. It is a crutch that some folks lean on that supports them in the idea that 'if we just change our behavior' all this will pass. "if we show them how nice and understanding we are, they'll leave us alone'.

Folks, its a pipe dream. Our enemies would gladly kill each of us in our beds. There is NO appeasing them. Appeasing the Germans in the '30's didn't keep Hitler from murderng one less Jew. Negotiating with the Japanese in the '30's didn't stop the Rape of Nanking, nor Pearl Harbor, nor the Bataan Death March.

We are facing fascism here, cloaked in the garb of religion. It is a war to the death. The only way to deal with it is to give it swift, repeated and unapologetic kicks in the teeth.

Gentlemen,

I kindly suggest that we are not in an all-out war with a specific group of previously identified people, like German soldiers or the Soviet Union. We are in a war of ideas where we kill off the crazies so the normal people (Muslim or not) can get back to living normal lives. There are millions of young, poorly educated Muslim men sitting on the fence right now, watching the show. They are not terrorists, "death cultists", or anything else, yet. They will decide if the dream of world democracy and human rights (which we actually believe in, right?) is a worthy goal, or just an empty excuse we use based on OUR behavior. The things we do in foreign policy, the way we conduct our battles, treat our prisoners and the things our leaders say will either demonstrate our dream, or make us look like liars.

This General's comments might be a raindrop in an ocean. But I continue to be amazed that some of you see this Islamic terrorism thing as such a simple us/them military conflict that will end with a surrender or defeat, which it simply can not. It will end when the Islamic world has trouble recruiting new Jihadists because the young people would rather go into politics, start a business or go drive their Ford 4x4.

Facism needs a steady diet of propaganda to survive. I agree with Handy. There are a billion muslims. If they were all against us, we wouldn't be making the progress we are in Afghanistan or Iraq. There are extremist that have to be killed to keep America safe. We have to isolate these people the best that we can. There is a difference between strategy and appeasement. We have to strike out but not blindly. Call me what you will, but I don't want to see our economy crippled and have China as the next superpower.

i wonder if the leaders of aforementioned wife-beaters think it is fun to shoot at american troops? and why don't we ever see those statements from them in the news? sounds like a pretty one-sided story from the grass eaters to me. :barf:

Yes, I do believe we get exposure to the terrorists opinions on the US.

Where the hell have you been?

i just went to aljazeera.net and did a search for 'James Mattis':

looks like the only news sources that care about this are cnn and reuters

General: It's 'fun to shoot some people'
Commandant gives counsel, acknowledges wrong word choice

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A three-star Marine general who said it was "fun to shoot some people" should have chosen his words more carefully, the Marine Corps commandant said Thursday.
