Why every law abiding citizen should be armed?

I also think that at someplace we have to draw a line? What say you sir?

I think you're still using question marks instead of periods and not getting my point.

Based on the observation of your post and ignoring the question marks, I think shooting someone in the posterior when fleeing the premisis is an unlawful act and you wouldn't want me on that jury panel.

Tuttle8,

If I ever have to take another English exam, I would surely appreciate your training and assistance. If ever have to go to battle, I suspect Buck9 would be my choice. Mind you, I have no prejudice against pacifists - some of my best friends are pacifists!

And it's my job here to oversee posts are at least at an 8th grade level. Read the rules of the board.

And one item of note: I take orders from Rich seriously and carry them out the best of my ability. What kind of soldier do you want to watch your back? (Rhetorical question. No need to answer.)

You gonna shoot someone who sneak thiefs your car to steal an IPOD?

He didn't say that. Could have just as well been the house with his mother home alone.

Before you shoot someone that is breaking into your car you may want to save up some money for a good lawyer because you are going to need it.

Sure are some folks on this thread real good at putting words in folks mouths and and admonishing them based on assumptions.

I don't know where and when that line will be drawn - I will probably not live to see it, but I will say this. Each of us have a breaking point to where we would say, "If I have to live like this, I would be better off in jail." To be able to live with dignity and without fear is what allows mankind to live in social structures that benefit all - and those two things are not just "stuff".

Having worked in a jail (not as an actual jail employee, but working inside the jail), I can tell you that I could put up with having someone steal something from me everyday and never figure I was better off in jail. I'd rather live in a cardboard box behind the Safeway with nothing but the clothes on my back.

But really, while there are areas where people may live in fear, I don't think most Americans do so. Even if one is the victim of a property crime such a burglary or a car break in, I don't think that person will be reduced to a quivering wreck living in fear of it happening again.

I think you paint a much bleaker picture of the current situation in the U.S. than it actually is. But if it is that way where you live, you have my sympathy.

That may be true, but in this case, it isn't. The OP posted about his car being broken into. And he clearly states:

I had a pistol but was asleep and unable to do anything about it.

Any reasonable person could infer that he meant had he been awake he and his pistol might well have attempted to stop the theft.

I think too many folks judge on the OP's comments. He wasn't saying he would have shot anyone or any such. Just that he didn't feel safe. If they bust a car window today, will it be a house window tomorrow? People get emboldened with success, good and bad alike. I would worry about escalation myself. I hope justice is done in this case and the bad folks are caught and learn their lesson.

As to a good pistol for your Mom, I am a huge fan of the airweight j-frames by S&W and would highly recommend the 637/638/642. Only five, but five for sure. Throw some laser grips on it and you have a fine tool for your mother. :)

No, Don. Actually, based on statistical data, I live in one of the safest areas of the United States. I do not live in fear, except for maybe a fear of what "tolerant attitudes" toward crime can do for society. I have grandchildren that will have to live in that society and I wish for it to be a good life for them.

I do have one question - what is your attitude gonna be when someone decides that the box and clothes, that you claim as your own stuff, now belongs to them? (Although, this may be an area of agreement - I guess even I would choose to freeze rather than kill another for just a cardboard box!)

This is really two different threads and I'm not up to sorting them out tonight.

I'm going to close this one and suggest that the OP start a thread about how to deal with car thefts in Tactics and Training and another thread about what home defense gun would be suitable for his mother in General Handguns.
