Why every law abiding citizen should be armed?

I live in metro Atlanta, and I woke up this morning to find that my car window was busted in and my Ipod was stolen. I just got back from vacation and was in Florida last week. So I got home went with my mom to pick up my younger syblings, then came home and fell asleep. My gun was only a foot away from me while I sleep (I am at home in the summer, in the fall I will return to Athens and UGA). Anyway, I woke up to a pretty crappy surprise. The worst part was that my car was in the driveway and it happened while my mom, younger brother and younger sister sleep ( and me on the couch). The thug who did this took my Ipod but he can have that. What he took is the security and sanctity of my home. I had a pistol but was asleep and unable to do anything about it. Anyway I posted a previous thread about a more powerful handgun for my mom and after this we will be going this week to purchase her a new pistol. Anyway Thank the Good Lord above that no one was hurt. Does anybody have suggestions about a good compact 9mm/.38special handgun that my mom could carry on her person. Before I am asked, yes she owns a gun (and is a Great shot), and yes she wants a gun smaller and more powerful than her Ruger Mark II to carry. Sorry about the book, in my defense I am a writer and a Literature Major at UGA.:D

I think I get the gist of the OP which is:

What he took is the security and sanctity of my home.

although the message could easily be interpreted as "everyone should be armed to deter thieves".

People often forget that unless you are military engaged in battle, a handgun or any firearm, really, is a defensive weapon. Call the police if you notice a theft in progress. Use your gun when your life or your loved one's lives are threatened.

Had a local man who thought the same as you, went outside to confront the kids stealing from cars...

Long story short...one dead kid and the " law abiding citizen " is looking at murder charges...

Don't defend property, it isn't worth it.

NO.1 You never leave anything of value in your car. It happens here a lot and most times is just local teens. But it was just your car not your home, try coming from from work and your home was broken into:eek: I did then you have something to worry about:mad:

I've had my car broken into everywhere I have lived. I never keep anything of value in my car, ever. As for "What he took is the security and sanctity of my home" Where do you live? Is it the suburbs? If so, then you have been struck by local teens. Crackheads don't get on buses to go steal i-pods from the burbs, they do that stuff in their own neighborhoods. Now if you live in the city, you never had security or sanctity to begin with :D

"why every law abiding citizen should be armed".

Couldn't disagree more. Many people out there have no business being armed, for various reasons.

Don't defend property, it isn't worth it.

...except in Texas where it's legal under certain circumstances.

Exactly. I'm sorry your car was broken into, but... it happens, and it's not worth shooting anyone over. It's worth looking at the reporting on that case in Rochester as an example of what NOT to do: there's a thread on that case (now locked) here, with many links to news stories.

A car alarm might be more of a deterrent than any number of handguns next to you while you're asleep.

Yes in Texas it is legal to defend property in certain circumstances. I won't complain if my neighbor shoots a thug breaking into his car at night.

But I would try a different route if I had a gun and caught them. I would not go outside I would call the cops and watch. If the thugs left before the cops get there I would take my cell phone and gun and start following while keeping the cops on the phone with me. I am going to do everything I can to get them caught. I might not shoot them but I am not going to just let it go.

WA is always looking for someone to sound bloodthirsty.

WA always finds them too....sometimes without even having to scoll, viz:

Im not talking about shooting anyone for breaking into my car. I understand why the thread was interpreted this way. Im worried about the fact that next time he could come into my moms house when she was alone, or when my sister is alone, to me that is unnacceptable. But yes I am ****** they took the Ipod, but would not shoot them over it. Also I do live in the suburbs. The security of my home being shaken is what Im mad about, not the ipod or the broken window, also my neighbor down the street had his car broken into today. I guess I was ****** when I wrote the first post. But the point is, what if they had broken in to the house and hurt my mother and sister?
Sorry the title was misleading, I would never advocate shooting over property only in defense of life and limb.

Also in Georgia we have more lenient self defense laws than some other states. Again I would never shoot anyone over an Ipod or property. Also these guys have been messing with my mother this past week when she was home alone. Im worried that next time they will go for the house and hurt my mom and sister.

Its not the title that is misleading.

What is disturbing is that you said in your post:
I had a pistol but was asleep and unable to do anything about it.
What would you have done if you weren't asleep? What would you have done with your gun if had been awake?

Cort Jestir hit the nail on the head and took away the message that I intended the post to have. Clearly I need to pay more attention to how I get the point accross. Sorry for the confusion guys. And Wildalaska, I swear I'm not blood thirsty. As I said they can have my Ipod, but these idiots have messed with my mom all week, and now Im worried they will get braver and go for the house when my mom or sister is all alone.

You didn't find anything accept another example of you supporting the criminal.

As I said they can have my Ipod, but these idiots have messed with my mom all week,

"Messed with" in what way? If they have been stalking, harassing or threatening her, you should have been making calls to 911. If the cops don't get there before they leave, at least you could report the incidents and set a history that would back you up later if a shooting DID occur.

They can steal from my car all they want, but if they take one step towards a building I'm occupying - that's a different story.

If you and your neighbors are all asleep when the bad guys are prowling around at night, then it won't make any difference if you have a gun or not.

Dude you were sleeping when this happened. If you had been sleeping in a battle tank the thief would have gotten your stuff. What you need is a car alarm which is much cheaper than another firearm.
