I was out walking the power lines near my house about a month ago and ran across drug accessories. There were pipes, papers, bent (and scorched)aluminum cans, and broken beer bottles. I don't want to walk in to that group unarmed.

Interesting.

About a month ago, my wife and I went for a drive. While on our way home, we passed 4 Hispanic males with huge, fully loaded backpacks. They were maybe 10-12 miles north of Mexico, obviously waiting for a ride...

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I were on our way back from Phoenix when she noticed a bundle beside the road of maybe 3 cubic feet in volume...

A friend of our's who drives a school bus was on her route when she spotted 8 fully loaded backpacks beside the road.

These were all along well traveled, paved roads. It sorta makes me wonder just how much is coming through more remote areas?

IMO, each and every person who buys illicit drugs of any kind contributes directly to the murders and other crimes that happen because of it.

Yeah, the area I live in is another reason I carry a gun when out in the hills, but I'd carry one anyway.

Daryl, I don't live on the border. However, I do live close to US Interstates 40and 85. I-85 runs from Montgomery Alabama to Petersburg Virginia. It is an alternative route for smugglers trying to avoid the heat of I-95. I-40 runs from Wilmington (an ocean front city with plenty of fishing boats) to Barstow California.

US Route 70 also runs near my home. It runs from a small town on the North Carolina coast that serves as a ferry terminal for some outer banks islands. It runs all the way to Globe, Arizona. Along the way it runs through Memphis and Little Rock. So, it has also become a secondary conduit.

I think the spot I stumbled upon was more of a place for consumption. However, it wasnt to long ago that the police, in the next county, had a shoot out with several members of the MS-13 gang.

I've been out on Jeep trails and noticed folks on the other side of the valley watching us with binoculars... And they are in an area that is very remote, and where there's not supposed to be people on 4 wheelers. Certainly not watching my comings and goings...

I've also been on private land Jeeping and found orange juice bottles set up in the sun "cooking." I looked up some meth production procedures and think that's what it was all about. I wish I had a gun to #1 dispose of them and #2 protect myself after I did #1...

The more I go out into the country the more I think this country is full of nothing but criminals, illegals, and drug labs. I know that's not the case, but it's hard to go places that are safe- thus the pistol (or more).

Because I can, mostly, or sometimes for plinking. But I've also hiked and camped unarmed in wilderness areas, and I haven't been overly concerned about not having a firearm with me.

I backpack in a national forest on a regular basis, probably ten months out of the year, and I've done it both with and without a gun. We (the group of guys that goes) are all pretty familiar with the area and what's there, and we've never had any problems with predators, either two legged or four.

If I'm going in woods that I'm not familiar with, I will without a doubt have my handgun with me.

Plinking and the occasional edible small animal.

Camping, hiking, and hunting for many years and the only time I've seen bears were the ones the idiots in Yellowstone were feeding.

I carry in the woods for the same reason I carry in the city. I just carry a bigger gun in the woods (and in reference to a different thread; No, I do not pocket carry in the woods. OWB.) :D

I marked every thing other than bear. I guess if I was attacked by a bear I would use it...

but I doubt my 357 snubby with 125 grain SJHP would do much even to the smaller black bears.

I have shot a lot of squirls with it.

In the woods ill often carry my .44 blackhawk in a shoulder holster as well as a 3" gp100 at 4 o'clock. .44 for big predators .357 for 2 legged critters..

But often ill have a 12 gauge Mossy loaded with buckshot or slugs because bears are common where im from and ive had some freaky close encounters with them. I feel undergunned even with my .44 when i see a big ass bear...
