Two words: crystal meth.

Those guys set up in remote rural areas, they're paranoid and unstable, and they tend to react in a rather impolite manner to strangers who might stumble into their "territory."

For all Lawful Purposes...

I spend a lot of time in the woods, scouting, exploring, moving cameras and tree stands, maybe just hiking with my kids - and can't be carrying a rifle or shotgun. So of course i have a pistol on my side. I'd much rather have a shotgun - i have a hard time imagining ANYTHING that wouldn't stop if hit in the face with a couple 400grain, 1900 fps hollowpoint copper bullets, certainly nothing where i live in southern New England - but during closed seasons, carrying that "hunting implement" would be prima facia evidence of poaching, according to our laws.

So i carry my .357 OWB and a couple speedloaders, all filled with Hornady Critical Defense loads. Since my state doesn't allow hunting with any type of pistol, it is clearly only for self-defense. And it'd certainly do the job, if god forbid it ever became necessary.

Still rather have a shotgun.

Friends,
I've been attacked by farm dogs, wearing collars, while taking photographs in the field, well out of sight of any farm or fence.
Without my revolver, I would have been, at the best, badly damaged.
I would not consider walking 10 feet away from my car in the field without being armed.

Not snakes-little need as far as defense;if you can shoot you can retreat.

The problem with everglades moccasins is that they can be very aggressive and will actually chase you, sometimes without you knowing about it; Had it happen more than once growing up in Florida.

Arizona is a bit different; Sometimes you can retreat from a rattler which tends to stand its ground rather than chase you, and sometimes you can't. I know one thing: You can't outreact a rattler.

Ladies and Gents,

The two rules of the woods:

#1. Never go into the woods without a firearm!
#2. Do not screw up rule #1.

I misinterpreted the question and
took it as "while I hunt"
I never go in the woods with out
a pistol because you never, ever know
who or what you'll meet
