Why do we have guns?

Well being a Canadian I have the privilege to own fire arms, some I own for there historical value: N01 MK3 SMLE built in Lithgow Australia around 1939, M91/30 Mosin Nagant built in Izhevsk Russia around 1944, 98K Mouser built around 1940, still looking for more info on this one.

I also have a Savage in a .223rem for Coyotes and general target shooting.

And lastly I have 2 Cooey's a 39 and 75 both of which came from my grand father.

I can think of all the political reasons and they're all good and valid. But, I started collecting and owning firearms because of their historical contributions and because I can reload for them and shoot them. For me, there is no hobby which is now more fun, since nerve damage has robbed me of my left hand (50+ years of playing guitar and bass are now over for good).

My days pretty much revolve around some aspect of firearms in one way or another. If I lived in another country or in a number of less enlightened States ... my hobby would bee severely curtailed

With absolutely no disrespect intended, your wording brings home a very valid point. In Canada you have the privilege, while in the United States, we have the right.

Protection from the government, then protection from crime.

Then hunting and shooting

I find guns so intriguing because they are mechanical marvels, many of them have so much history, but most of all, shooting perfection is impossible.

The foremost reason is because I understand that the only person who can always be relied upon to protect me and my loved ones from evil, violent people is myself. A firearm remains the most effective commonly available device for defending my life and the lives of my loved ones against a violent aggressor. Because I view the defense of my life and the lives of my loved ones not only as a basic human right, but also as my own moral responsibility, I feel that it is only prudent to procure the most effective possible tools to help me fulfill that responsibility.

The preceding, however, is not the sole reason that I own firearms. I also find recreational shooting and hunting to be pleasurable activities and I cannot enjoy them to the fullest unless I own a firearm. I also have a great interest in history and many of the firearms that I own have some historical significance due to either the time period in which they were made or their past users.

I enjoy shooting, I use to enjoy hunting immensly, and still do it on the rare occasions I can take the Lady Friend hunting, her father wants to go sit in a duck blind, or Pops invite me to a dove shoot.

I enjoy the history of firearms. Despite the advancements in weapons, at the end of the day, it is still a guy on the ground with a rifle, carbine, machine gun, or pistol that often decides the day.

And finally, if melodramatically, my rifle stands as the ultimate force to gurantee the Constitution, be it against foreign or domestic threats.

I have guns because:

They were the tools of my trade for over 20 years.

I hate golf.

I love rabbit, quail, and Venison.

There are evil people in this world and I am a good guy.

Peace. Shooting is a form of meditation. The skills required force me to eliminate all distractions and focus on shooting. When I have completed a shooting session, I am at peace with myself and the world around me.
