Why do we have guns?

I have guns because I enjoy shooting them and I enjoy the fine control of good marksmanship.... hopefully, I'll have some of that control myself one day...

They are also "boys toys" to a degree...

A morning at the range is fun and a distraction from life's little irritations, and the thought of finding a quiet field somewhere with a soon to be owned .22 and silencer and plinking in peace would also be nice...

Right now, if I'm honest about my motives, that is pretty much it...

Two of my Uncles have ties to the Holocaust. I knew the answer to this question as soon I could speak.

How true it sadly is.
Where would we all be without firearms? Here in the "new world" we could very well be under British rule if not for firearms. Thats what they were after on April 19, 1775 right?

I enjoy shooting. My nephews and a few nieces enjoy shooting. I get to spend quality time with them.

Reloading for the different firearms are interesting and challenging. Some of the kids reload with me. (OK, I supervise, they do the work.)

It is surprising the stuff I find out about these kids. So, it is also a family hobby/past-time we all can enjoy.

Self-defense.

Hunting.

All the standard reasons plus - I enjoy developing my skills. The skills of shooting well, reloading, understanding the mechanisms that make the guns work, etc.

Just like I enjoy the skills of riding a motorcycle, flying airplanes, tying fishing flies, building radios, fixing my cars and so on.

Knowlege is good. And you have to do your homework to really know. (Reading about it isn't usually sufficient)

I originally had guns to hunt. Now it's too hunt and have fun with too. I do have a gun I use for home defense purposes, but it's also my squirrel and rabbit hunting gun. And if something were to ever happen and I needed my guns to defend my loved ones, me, and/or my home, let's just say I have enough to be considered prepared. But my guns aren't intended for that, they are used for hunting and range toys.

We have guns because of the way the British treated its American colonial settlers. They burned American towns, conscripted unwilling soldiers, forcefully quartered their soldiers in people's houses, and searched and seized whatever they wanted or needed from civilians. If the British treated the American colonies fairly, didn't over tax them, provided them with true representation in England, we would be British and therefore wouldn't have guns.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss....but our forefathers saw to it that at least we would still have our guns..........and Bibles.

The Second Amendment of the US Constitution was not included in the Bill of Rights in order to protect guns rights for deer hunters. Hunting is a given. The Second Amendment first and foremost protects our right to bear arms in the event they must be used to threaten or dispatch enemies of said constitution. It is another check on tyranny. Understand, when the US Constitution is at stake, defending it by armed rebellion is always, always "on the table."

YES !!

also the Constitution is meant for restricting the governments actions against the citizenry.., in other words the Constitution says what the Gvmnt. can NOT do, the second amendment is to insure we will always have the right to protect our selves from a tyrannical Gvmnt. and foreign enemies.

Sporting implements. I like shooting competition, guns are needed just like golf clubs are needed if you play golf, bowling balls are needed if you bowl.

It's a sport, sports require equipment. Guns are required in my sport.

Why do we have guns?

That is a good question actually and one I can only answer for myself. I don't own guns just because of the 2nd Amendment or exercising some constitutional right. As a young person, I took the right for granted but have learned that this right is not to be taken for granted. At first I owned guns because I used them for hunting, target shooting, plinking, personal defense, etc., then as time when on I just like guns for the sake of the guns. Hence, I don't feel the absolute need to shoot something because I own it or feel I need to justify to someone else why I enjoy firearms.

I have had the need for a gun when I didn't have one, that's why I carry one now. Fool me twice... The average response time is also several minutes where I live and that's living a mile from a Police station!

As for why I have more than one? Well a 9mm is good for a bad guy but no good for Squirrel hunting. A .22 is good for squirrel hunting but no good for deer. A .30-06 is good for deer but not squirrel and not for badguys up close. That's 3 that I need right there!

Having a cohesive collection and being able to tie that collection to historical events is also very satisfying and a damn good reason to have guns. So much of history is tied to guns.

Also, the high school I went to in the 60s had an NRA sanctioned rifle team. We shot competition with other high schools in south Florida, and it taught a sense of sportsmanship. Smallbore competition also teaches discipline and patience to become proficient with firearms. It is a sport in every sense of the word.

Other reasons for gun ownership is to have a means of protecting your life and the lives of your loved ones. In addition, like Will Beararms, I, too, had relatives who were murdered by the Nazis in Italy and Poland. If they had been armed, it might have been prevented.
