A small percentage of 44 mag guns are small with short barrels. A lot of 357 mag guns are small with short barrels. A big gun is always more pleasant to shoot, but harder to carry. A small gun can be quite unpleasant to shoot, but is easy to carry.
I have a 2" Ruger SP101 in .357Mag, and a Taurus 4" 44mag.
In the Ruger I only shoot 38 spl +P. In a short barrel there is a slight increase in velocity with the 357 mag, but the price you pay for it is quite high, (Recoil, noise, flash). If I had a 4 or 6" barrel, It would probably be a different story.
The 44 mag is a much larger gun, and has a more manageable recoil.
for the city it is the Ruger, for the woods, the 44 mag.
