Well, fwiw I own 10 1911's: 6 Colts, 1 SA, 1 Kimber, 2 ParaOrds. Of the 10, only 2 - 3 cycle reliably out-of-the-box even with FMJ ammo. The rest had to go back at least once or twice each to get various things fixed under warranty or be sent to a smith for tuning. Problems ranged from jamming/feeding problems, failure to return to battery, down to that SA that would drop the mag out after every shot to a Para with a trigger that wouldn't return forward after firing.
Most were fixed and work reasonably reliably, although a few need to go back for a third or fourth trip to resolve chronic cycling problems.
Guess I'm a lemon magnet, as I've had problems with almost all brands of firearms I've purchased. However, I do seem to have a higher ratio of 'problem childs' with 1911 designs. Once they are running right, though, they're my favorite platform.
Fwiw, I also have 8 Glocks and only had problems with one. 4 Sigs and 2 Berettas w/ no problems.
