Who makes the best overall automatics?

I've owned them all at one time or another. I currently own only Glocks and an HK P7. The P7 is a sweet gun, but I still grab a Glock when I carry. I've never had a problem with any of my Glocks (5 of them) and that just gives me the warm fuzzy feeling inside. Oh yah, Wild Turkey gives me that warm fuzzy feeling too. ;-)

Any Browning hi-power or clone of the original 1935 design is about as good as an out of the box pistol should be. So many modern pistols are based on this design.

Inglis, Mauser and FEG all have made excellent HP clones, they aren't as pretty as a pre-war FN.. but they will shoot.

80 years of Colt 1911 shouldn't be sneered at either, nor for that matter should 100 years of smith and wesson model 10 M&P in 38 special. (ok its not an auto)

Best "new" pistol i've seen fit and finish wise is the Sig 226 but I've heard rust nightmare stories about the sig.. (you never hear a Ruger owner bitch about rust) so really...

there is a LOT to be said for "staying power" in a pistol the Colt 1911, the Browning 1935 Hi-Power and the SW Model 10 M&P have the LONGEST track record compared to other "premier" makes.

What's the BEST?? Whichever one YOU shoot the best and weill clean and maintain the best.

All that said.. if Sig Made a 10 shot .45 cal 226 sized pistol in all stainless I'd say it would be a top contender for "best" overall

Only 3 mentions for a CZ? Comon guys!

I own a EAA Witness PS 9x19.. being a polymer copoff of a CZ75 and as excellent as it is.. I can only *imagine* what the real thing would shoot like.

My vote goes to CZ.

Dangus,

You didn't mention Ruger. They make the best guns for the money... but I think Sigs are probably the finest firearms.

As I said, YMMV. I have owned/seen shot (on mil/pol, public/private ranges) as many SIGs/Berettas as Glocks since about 86, and I've had the most reliability probs w the Glocks, the 19/23 more so than the G17/22.

Have never seen a broken Beretta slide or locking block (yes, I know it happens), have seen several broken trigger springs, guide rods, locking blocks on Glocks. Have seen SIGs w cracked frames, but they still worked OK. Have seen kBs in all three, but have only seen catastrophic kBs (ruptured barrel, cracked slide/frame) with factory ammo in Beretta 40s, Glock 40/45/357s.

I like Glocks, think they are great, but nothing is perfect, and I don't think they are the closest all the way around either. They are often my first choice, but not all the time and/or for everything.

Obviously, the rest of the world disagrees. They are kicking everybody elses butt in sales. Gotta be a reason? :)

Every time I go looking for a hi-cap magazine the name Bill Ruger pops into my head. I would never give that man one dime of my hard-earned cash. That company was omitted on purpose.

I've owned just about everything out there at one point or another. I think the best handgun would depend on how you intend to use it. for me personally the best gun in the world is my Sig 220 I carry it on duty and when I need it to it performs flawlessly. I dont need to change my grip to decock or drop the mag to reload (cant say the same for slide mounted decockers) I've always thought that it more difficult for MY thumb to gain solid purhase on the slide release for the Glock(s) for off duty and around the house I keep my Kimber ultra CDP (in condition 1)it's light, pretty and it reminds me of my military days. My last chance gun is a Glock 26 light, small, VERY concealable! all of these are in my opinion the best gun for their respective job!

Another vote for the Browning Hi-Power & clones. Standing on soap box now...

Quoting from the _American Rifleman_, April '99, page 54-55 (Wiley Clapp):

"...the Hi-Power will continue to fire when other guns have long since failed...One Hi-Power fan who works on hundreds of different pistols every year is Wayne Novak. He states unequivocably '...the Browning Hi-Power is the most reliable automatic pistol in the world'"

"Its important to understand how very shootable the Hi-Power pistol is. It rests low in the hand, with the bore axis just above an extended trigger finger. Combined with an ergonomically excellent grip section, this makes for a fast-handling and quicl pointing semi-automatic pistol."

"While I have emphasized the inherent reliability of the gun, its ease of use is also a factor...fast repeat shots are a breeze, and the gun behaves beautifully in the hand"

Search TFL for "Hi-Power" and you will find a thread titled "Which is better--sex or a Hi-Power?" Granted, this may have been an overly enthusiastic gun owner, but I ask you, has anyone ever compared a [fill in the blank]in this way?

Off soap box now.

Put me square in the middle of the Walther camp. The P-99 is as innovative as it is handsome. Mine shoots the equal of any Glock or Sig I've shot at the range and when I made my decision to buy the Walther, I chose it over H&K.

No regrets.
