Who makes the best overall automatics?

For me the best overall would be Ruger. Glock is right up there, but the ergonomics aren't for everyone. But in the end if you go Ruger, Glock , H&K, Sig , they all work as long as you do your part.

Broken Arrow,

"The G19/23 seem to be the most problematic of their bunch. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, I have seen way too many that did not work as they should, needed several trips to Smyrna to get right."

Can you please provide information for this claim? I've handled plenty of G19s and G23s, and I must say that in my experience the exact opposite has been the case.

Glock, H&K, Sig, whats an IMI? Only reliability counts, the rest is shooter or ammo dependent. I only say Glocks are the best because I have fired about 45,000 rounds thru my 2 G21's, and about 3,000 to 7,000 each thru the G19, G30 and G17.

I'm gonna say Glock. They have the highest capacity of most modern autos and have very good accuracy. Durability and reliability are also very high with these guns. Glocks are very good overall and I really like 'em.

That said, I'd prefer HK. ;)

I like Glock too! Glock gets my vote!

Its impossible to say, it is entirely subjective.

Pick what kind of trigger, action type, features, and then go from there.

I've helped lots of my friends choose their first handguns. No two has picked the same gun.

I'm going to vote for Glock too.

I've had 1911s, which are nice but finicky w/ anything other than hardball in many cases.

I don't like SIG's trigger pull (too much takeup, even and esp. in SA mode), but it seems to vary a lot and may "break in," but I don't and never have owned one b/c of that.

CZ seems pretty good and I got a Swiss made clone that has to be the best feeling DA trigger I've shot, or rather the SA is the best of any DA I've shot.

Berettas are okay after you fool around with the poundage on the mainspring, but I wouldn't have traded my Glock for my Beretta 92 (an Italian version) on the basis of trigger pulls (the DA is actually better feeling than the SA). I haven't shot the 92 enough to really give it a reliability check, but I'm not expecting it to be a lemon after around 200 troublefree rounds.

No experience w/ HK, but I imagine I'll be getting one of those, or two, maybe.

If I were to categorize by bang for the buck, I'd recommend a Glock or a Makarov.

Being of a contentious nature I feel duty bound to ask:

Best at what?

For short range accuracy we cant leave out Pardini, Hammerli, Walther etc.

Sam...autoloaders are for those who can't figure out a cylinder latch.

Glocks will outlast anything else, especially guns with alloy frames. If you want the most durable, reliable and rust proof, combat pistol made it is a Glock. Next would be 1911s, which are also great guns.

I didn't know John Browning manufactured any pistols except prototypes. He designed some pretty good ones, but he never actually mass produced any.

In the context of the question about a manufacturer's overall line, I have to go with Glock (though I am not a Glock fan).

I think I would have to say the one that You shoot and Like the most :)

I'd have to put guns in quality categories rather than make any assertations about which is best. The quetion is like asking which is best, a Mercedes, BMW, or a Lexus. Here goes:

Manufacturing Quality: Best: H&K, Sig. Middle: Glock, Beretta, Ruger, CZ. Worst: Taurus.

Design Quality: Best: H&K, Ruger, CZ. Middle: Beretta, Sig, Glock, Taurus. Worst: Most modern designs are good.

Political Correctoness: Best: CZ, Sig, H&K. Middle: Beretta, Glock. Worst: S&W, Ruger, Taurus, Colt.

I'm leaving several off here. Some good manufacturers are Para Ordnance, Kel-Tec, North American Arms, Kimber, Mauser, Browning, etc. IMHO, most of the time when somebody buys these guns, there are making their choice for other reasons like capacity, concealment, etc.

My opinion, I own and carry three weapons primarily. One is the Kel-Tec P11. Another is the Para Ordnance P-14 Limites. The third is the S&W model 66. I also often carry a pocket 25 auto as a backup or last-minute thought when going to the store.

Glock, H&K, Sig, whats an IMI?

I was referring to the original creators of the Desert Eagle line.

I'm suprised to have gotten this many responses so quickly...

GLock is the best over all in my opinion. It has great durability, reliability and good accuracy. And extreem ease of use and simple trigger system.

Sig is my next choice with great reliability the best accuracy and good ergonomics.

Hk would be my next choice running neck and neck with sig. HK has good accuracy great durability and reliability and fair ergonomics.

Beretta would be my next choice as its got good reliability with good accuracy. The only flaw is the large size of the pistols in relation to the caliber and magazine capacity you get.

Walther's p99 is a good fire arm that had some teething problems.

I don't care for IMI. They seem like an off brand that has not earned trust yet.

I would have to say that it is a toss up between Glock and Ruger.

"Glock 26: 17 rounds of concealed carry DEATH comming your way from out of nowhere!!! THAT'S FIREPOWER, BABY!!!"

Define "best"! IMHO:

Best in terms of reliability, simplicity and product line variety is Glock.

Best bang for the buck is Ruger.

Best concealability/firepower ratio is Kel-Tec.

Best pure accuracy (unmodified) is Beretta.

Best overall is the one in your holster when the bad guys show up. A Lorcin that saves your family is better than the SIG or HK you couldn't afford.

Glock gets my vote, but I admit that I have never tried an H & K USP nor a Sig. I am happy with my Glocks (all seven of them).

For ME it's a reputable 1911 maker such as Kimber, Springfield, or in hi cap, Para or STI. These guns fit me, which others don't to the same degree. But 1911s aren't always for your avareage person, as it takes a good amount of repetitons to be comfortable with this arm(I dry-fire every night for IPSC)

For your average person I would have to say Ruger, followed very closely by Glock. The only reason I pick the Ruger over Glock is the price and the fact that the Ruger is easier on fired cases, especially in 40. Hard to reload Glock 40 brass more than 3-4 times before it splits.
