who loves the .44 mag?

S&W 629-4 Classic DX. My "wild" load is 23.7 grains of H110 under a 240 gr. JHP. Tends to get a bit of attention at the range ;)

Put one in for me and all my friends.

Just love both of mine. From roundballs at 500 fps to 310 gr wide flatnose gaschecks through my new model blackhawk at jolting speeds.
I will say I have met a few critters that didn't like them so much. I have put more meat in the freezer with my 44 than any of my buddies have with their deer rifles.

I havent started reloading the .44 mag just yet but I plan on it soon. for plinking I just shoot the Remington UMC 180gr. For hunting I like the hornady xtp 200gr.

If you handload, which I don't, you might as well have a .44 special instead of a .44 magnum.

I handload, and have both .44 Specials and .44 Magnums. My .44 Specials are a medium framed Ruger and a medium framed Uberti, I wouldn't subject them to the .44 Magnum level ammunition I use in my magnums.

My pet loads for the .44 Magnum use the 180 gr. Sierra JHP @ 1715 fps, and the 240 gr. Nosler @ 1410 fps. At times I've used the 245 gr. cast #429421 @ 1512 fps. No .44 Special comes close to matching these figures.

The .44 Magnum provides the extra power at extended ranges, and that velocity gets the bullet to the target quicker, leaving less time for wind and gravity to act on it.

My .44 Specials:

And a couple of my .44 Magnums:

The brass butted Ruger has had over 17,000 rounds fired through it!

This is my only 44 Magnum.

Interarms Virginian Dragoon.

Tempted to try loading up some Black Powder 44 Mags (44 Russian XL?? :) ) and running 'em through this one.

I've owned a few different flavors of 44 mag. over the years. My current ownership envolves a Ruger Super Redhawk 9 1/2" barrel with a Sightmark Ultra Shot red dot. I have some 240gr. SWs loaded up for it, that produces some very impressive accuracy.

This will be my first year deer hunting with it.

Versatile

The 44 Special and 44 Magnum are both versatile rounds that can be loaded mild, medium,or hot.I have some relatively light loaded 44 magnum that I use in my S&W 29-2(no endurance package)and it's pleasant enough to shoot.I also have some hotter loads for my Marlin carbine and my Ruger Vaquero.

If you were talking to me, then thanks...

Spalted Maple from my wood pile...Taught myself to make grips last Spring...

Those grips on the .44 really have an antique look to them, like they belong on a Colt cap-and-ball revolver.

Meaning this as a compliment, by the way.

I LOVE the 44 Mag. I've had my S&W M29 with 8 3/8" barrel since the mid '80's. I have to sheepishly admit that I had never shot 44special through it. I bought some Mag ammo from Underwood recently and thought I may as well try some Special, just for the heck of it. At the range, my buddy and I could not believe how mild 44 special is out of this size handgun. He said that it seemed like a pop-gun, yet out of this length of barrel it is fairly powerful. Lots 'o fun. I have a box of Buffalo Bore 270gr JFN for any big stuff (and will probably have the rest of this box for a looong time), Underwood 240gr JHP for any normal game taken in Texas, and for general plinking/target shooting, any inexpensive Magnum or Special will do.

And from you that is indeed a compliment...

I admire your taste in guns, and pay attention when you post...

I do. My EDC on the Prairie.

Purchased one (S&W 629-6) for a trip to big bear land. I found out that I actually like shooting it. Now it's one of my favorite guns. With the cost of ammo I had to turn to reloading and as luck would have it I found a load that grouped pretty darn good too.:)

I agree with Redhawk5.5. If you're not a reloader, the best BANG for your buck is Remington UMC 180gr SP. Usually can pick 'em for $25-35 in 50rd boxes. Lots of slow-burning powder under a lightweight 180gr bullet makes an impressive fireball and overpressure sound, especially if you have a short barrel or muzzle brake/compensator. Nearly as loud as the deer hunters scoping-in their 12ga shotguns with 3" magnum slugs at the indoor range..

My favorite 'shooter' .44 Mag is my blue 1994 Taurus M44 with 8" compensated barrel.

I have owned three .44 Mags over the years. Great hunting gun and have taken several antelope and deer over the years with that caliber. The first and second ones I had were Ruger NM Super Blackhawks, both with 7 1/2" barrels. The third was a NM Super Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel. I loved them all. The last one I sold a few years back and recently have been shopping for another. I have it narrowed down to a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan. I want something with a short barrel that's stout and of course stainless. It will be my grizzly bear tamer when I venture into the hills from my house.
