Who Hunts Deer With Slugs?

I hunt deer with either a 2 3/4 or 3" slug out of either my 870 or 1100 Rems. The 870 likes Rem. ammo but the 1100 perfers winchester for God only knows what reason.

Winchester slugs for smooth bore!!

Get a bench rest! shoot remington sluggers and then fire winchester rifled slugs.Winchesters shoot more accurate by far.2 3/4 12ga out of my browning A-5, over 100YDS.= dead deer!!!Smooth bore with a scope. Why change I never missed?

slugs for deer. sitting in stand or on ground only.

i use slugs when i am sitting in a tree and on the ground. first shot is a slug followed by 2 #1 buck if i am moving around its all 3 buckshot in the gun. 870 12 ga. magnum with a 20" sighted barrel. rem. slugger slugs 1 oz regulars. the only rifle hunting you can do here in nj is muzzleloading type. or use all slugs or get a fully rifled barrel for the shotgun and use sabots. most of any of the shots i may have to take will be within 50 yards.

sabot slug rip-off

Here in Illinois, only shotguns. I use a Benelli auto-loader Super 90 w. a 3 by 7 Leupold scope. I shoot 2 3/4 Lightfield sabot slugs because they are the cheapest best performers. Sabot slugs are a rip-off - Does anybody out there load sabot slugs and do they work well?

Hi, being from Canada, I would just like to know if any of you know the actual reason or philosophy that your wildlife management people says you can only hunt with shotgun slugs and not rifles?
Has a common sense reason ever been provided other than "just because"
I ask this out of curiosity because with an 80-175 pound animal, how could a .30 cal rifle not be considered adequate?
The shock value to a deers nervous system with a .300 magnum certainly must be enough, and I know that the 2 deer I have shot with one died instantly. Fell to the ground like someone cut off their legs.
Please inform me as to the rationale behind this slug only philosophy.
I know that a slug can be devastating, but at shots out to 100-150 yards
shot placement and accuracy go a long ways to a humane death also
Thanks for any info you can give me

The main reason shotguns are the only allowed firearm here is because the distance the bullet travels. Usually, rifle bullets travel much further than a slug from a shotgun so it is a safety thing.

Being from the United States of America, and being from a state that has a rifle and shotgun only zone (I am from MI but live in WA now) I can tell you that the deer in the shotgun zone are much larger than the deer in the rifle area. It would seem that a shotgun typicaly (not always) requires more hunting before a large buck is taken. A deer at 200 yards is safe from a shotgun hunter, with a rifle it is meat in the fridge and a large rack on the wall.

The ratios are better in the shotgun zone and larger bucks are to be had. There just also happens to be more people in the shotgun zone and even in the rural areas, you are not far from people. So safety is also a consideration.

First deer hunt at age 40

A friend of mine is taking me out for my very first deer hunt this week.
We live in west central Indiana. I have a Mossberg 500 12ga, 28" smooth bore built in medium choke. No sights except the ball on the top of the muzzle, and no scope. My friend told me I could use his scoped Mossy 12 with slug barrel, but I want to kill a deer with MY gun. Is it realistic to think I can kill a deer with MY shotty? What kind of rifled slugs should I get ? My gun is chambered 2 3/4 or 3, my friend said I should use 3" magnums.
Any advice?
Also...is it a good or bad idea to bring along a side arm on the hunt?

Scary,
Verify that it is legal in your state to shoot slugs out of a gun not having either rifle sights or a scope. Here in Nazi Jerky it is not legal, or at least it wasn't years ago, when I took the safety course.

Sure you can shoot Fosters in it; probably best if you do. Try the WW 15 pack at Wally world. They also sell 10 packs of Federal F127RS. Those are what my SG prefers. Good luck. CB.

Here in Northern Virginia, the rules depend upon the county or locality. I used to hunt deer on Quantico Marine Corps base, which, being in Prince William county, called for shotgun slugs. At Ft. A.P. Hill (Caroline county, I believe) you can use slugs, but not rifles.
I've hunted at an Izaak Walton League chapter in Stafford, where I live, and their rule is slugs can be used only when hunting from a stand higher than 6 feet off the ground - buckshot for ground hunters. Stafford county allows rifles - the Izaak Walton chapter does not. I believe it's out of consideration for their neighbors. They have quite a few housing developements that have sprung up around their facility.
This year I am getting back out in the field after a nine-year absence. I'll be hunting in Fauquier county and Rappahannock county. In these locales, I can use my new Tikka T3 in .308 Win. :D

This year I have had great success using 20 guage Encore with Hornady SST slugs. Took a buck from 144 yards and a doe from 111 yards with this set-up. Both were dead long before they hit the ground. I am now very loyal to the SSTs.
