Who Hunts Deer With Slugs?

I use my old Ithaca Deerslayer in 20 Gauge with rifled barrel and 2X4 Redfield extended eye relief scope - I use the ols BRI Sabots that I think ?winchester? now makes. Mine wont shoot the copper Remingtons; they keyhole horribly.

I think the wife has a hard enough life without me trying to shoot at her. :)

For deer, I haven't yet, but I may. What are the no-rifle states besides Ohio & Iowa?

12ga. H+R ultra slug hunter with a bushnell trophy 3x9 scope.I use 2 3/4in lightfield hybred exp's and that teddy is as accurate as most rifles.deadly too 125+ yards..

The southern zone here in Clintonia mandates slugs in some of the counties, but some have come around to the realization that rifles are acceptable for deer hunting. I use my beloved A5 and Federal F127 RS slugs. I'm going to buy a couple boxes of Brennekes this year and see how they shoot just because Goose Hill puts them on sale around deer season. My springoff is going to try out a borrowed 1100 this weekend to see what brand it prefers before we stock up.

In the part of MN where I deer hunt, slugs are mandatory (roughly the lower SW 1/2 of the state. More generally, the non-forested, farming part).

I use a 12 gauge synthetic Beretta AL390 with a Hastings fully rifled slug barrel. I have a Leupold/Gilmore red dot sight, and a two point quick sling. It's nice handling; very fast to shoulder, acquire and shoot.

I shoot Federal 2 3/4" sabot slugs. I've never used 3" shells, as 2 3/4" shells seem to work just fine, and 3" shells just make more noise and recoil.

At 50 yards, it easily shoots 3" groups from a sitting position with a sling. I've never shot paper with it from any further than 50 yards.

I've been using this set up for about 9-10 years. I've taken probably 12 deer with it, ranging from maybe 90 yards to maybe as few as 20. A few have been knocked off their feet, onto their backs, legs kicking. Most have been DRT. Never had to track any more than 40 yards.

I have a Rem 1100 12 gauge that I use to hunt with. I had a cheap red dot on it, then switched to a leupold. Sold the Leupold and bought a Bushnell red dot and it broke on me the first time I shot the gun. Now I use my Thompson 50 cal. ML. I was shooting great groups with the new Hornaday slugs. Touching 3 shots at 100 yards

I use a Beretta AL3901 12 ga 28 in. smoothbore with rifled slugs and just a bead.

Last year I shot a deer (not my dear) through the heart at 75yds and it didnt make it 10 yds before dropping.

Slugs deal massive damage to fleash and bone.

New Jersey Shotgun Only

Here in New Jerky we are allowed shotgun only for deer during regular firearms season with a choice of buck or slugs. I went deer hunting for the first time last year (saw no game and hence had no shot) and bought a Remington 870 Express Synthetic Magnum with the rifled barrel with rifle sights. After experimenting with several different slugs, I went with the Remington Buckhammer 1 oz. 2-3/4" shells.

Maybe this year I'll get something with a little more experience, more opportunities to get afield and a few guys from work and the gun club taking me out to different locations.

I switch back and forth between shotgun and rifle while hunting in NY. I grew up where most counties were shotgun only, but recently some have opened up to allow rifles as well. For deer I use a Rem 870 SP, 23" rifled barrel, and Leupold VX-I 2-7X33mm scope. With Lightfield sabots it is deadly accurate and I reguarly get 1 1/2" 3-shot groups at 50-75yds with it. I've shot around 15 deer with shotguns in my life. My wife used my 870 last year to shoot her first deer ever. Made a great 100yd shot on a doe, dropping it where it stood. I used my 870 the year before that to shoot my largest buck yet, a nice 8pt dropped in his tracks as he walked 30yds away. With shotguns I have shot deer from 15-140yds. I practice with my shotgun every year out to 150yds before season starts.

I use an 870 with a smoothbore 18in barrel. I put remington sluggers through it. I only take that if I am hunting where I would inly have to take a 50 yard shot or less. For those longer shots I pack my .50 omega

I use a Remington 11-87 SP w/ cantilevered scope mount and a Leupold vxii 2-7. I use 3" Federal Premium or 3" Winchester Supreme sabots. My farthest kill was at 150 yards in 1999. Seems to work very well and the semi-auto does suck up alot of the recoil. For the most part, if it is in the crosshairs it is dead.

The lower half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula is a shotgun only area. My brother uses a Rem. 870 with a cantileavered (sp) scope mount. Don't know what kind of scope he's got on it.
But the slug guns and accessories of today are just a world of difference better than the stuff of 40 years ago when I hunted down there :D

Once the deer season closes here in Florida we are restricted to shotguns on state lands for the small game season.

And in Florida wild hogs are part of the fare during small game season.

My wife has a NEF 20ga single shot with a rifled barrel and a Red Dot that she uses. With the Hornady sabots, a 260 grain polymer tiped bullet that looks like their very reliable 240 grain .44 XTP with a red tip, it will shoot 2 inches easy at 50 yards.

Seems to be a little more powerful than a .44 mag out of a rifle. Works wonders on hogs.

Hear in the anti-hunting state of illinois rifles are not allowed. So I find that my 12 ga. Browning A5 with a deer barrel works very well. It is a smoothed bore so I use a rifled belloit slug. It is very acurrate from 50 to 75 yards and if you aim a little high you can be accurate at a 100 yards. It has iron sights.

I just got a smoothbore slug barrel for my 870 this past year. Haven't taken a deer with it yet. I've shot Remington Sluggers, Federal and Breneke Slugs. All perform reasonably well with the Breneke's turning in the best group so far at a hair under four inches at 100yds with open sights. I don't have a scope on it. At smoothbore slug ranges I don't personally see the point, but to each his own. I suppose if I had a rifled barrel and flat shooting slugs for 150-200 yd use it I would go that route. At those ranges I'll take my .30-06 though. :)

A USAF buddy of mine has 20 acres in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. We get together at his place nearly every year to hunt does for fun and meat. I've had great luck with his Mossberg and rifled barrel. But 12 ga recoil is not fun!

Hornady sabots are quite accurate and deadly at 100 yards or so.
