Who here drinks?

Polynikes it is for that reason (public witch hunting) that we need to be aware of the consequences that can come as a result of using a firearm for self defense. I take a couple of different blood pressure medications. Either one can cause physical and mental impairment in rare cases. I have been taking both for several years without that happening. For a prosecutor to try to use that to bring my ability to make a rational decision into question would very likely lack credibility. For the same witch hunting prosecutor to bring the use of alcohol into the discussion is a very different thing IMO.

people have legal precriptions of narcotics too whether zanax, klonopin, and/or valiums as examples that hit the same part of the brain as alcohol(pretty much alcohol in a pill) or painkillers like hydrocodone, vikadon, percs for their back as other examples

Last time I brought beer to our range we ended up shooting at the full beer cans with my 7mm mag to watch them vaporize.
I know many consider this alcohol abuse but it sure was fun.

Do you all worry about guns in your house when you are drinking? Your closet shotgun or nightstand revolver? DO you lock them up before a drink?

DO you make sure you don't have car keys in your pocket before you take that first sip?

ABSOLUTES are great for one size fits all 12 step programs, but that is about it.

You don't have to restrict yourself to narcotics or even to prescription drugs to find medications that affect reaction time and cognition. Antihistamines that are common in over-the-counter medications for colds, allergies, and sleep aids (many don't recognize that the sleep aid component of many "PM" products is diphenhydramine, AKA Benadryl) have such effects. OTC decongestants can affect mental aptitude. The list gets pretty long, actually.

When I was in the Cav and we were up at the border camp in Germany, we were allowed 2 beers a night. The Army considered that a safe number of drinks for a trooper to have when operating tanks, APC's and various weapons systems. I feel pretty good about having a glass of beer with my schnitzel while carrying.

I'm a bit of a social drinker and furthermore, I use to live in a off campus faternity house. (read: party central)

I had a ritual that I would do every thursday and friday night.

I would shower, brush my teeth, put on my jeans, but before I finished dressing, I would systematically unload every gun(only kept two loaded EDC piece and HD shotgun) and install trigger locks on every gun beforing stowing them back in thier locking closet.

Can't stand beer, so that limits my social life.

I just don't like the feeling alcohol gives me. One drink and the room starts moving. I couldn't imagine having to make a life/death decision when even mildly intoxicated.

chris thats like me w/tobacco. I smoked for ten yrs(quit for 11 but I smoked for two mths last yr when I relapsed on cigars). long story short dang cigarette knocked me out of commission every time I smoked one(literally). My body was rejecting the poison; I don't have the time and patience to get accustomed to it anymore(been quit a yr again).

Haven't read the whole thread, but in Michigan the legal limit for driving is .08 and for carrying a gun is .02. As such I drink only while at home, usually only a beer, especially with pizza. If I have to rush out of the house at that point, I must disarm. Ridiculous. Driving a car and carrying a gun should have the same legal limit.

That's usually a good thing! It keeps the riff-raff at a distance, lol. I am not a drinker par se but I usually have a few mixed drinks around the holiday season, one at a time. I'm a real light weight. One drink will get me buzzed and two will make me quiet and the third will put me to bed. Pretty much the same with beer also.

We're coming into beer-tip season. Many times during the holidays people invite me to have a beer with them, and it's usually top shelf. I say I'd love to but can't drink and drive so may I take it home with me and drink it there? It's kind of rude to turn down someones hospitality. They stack up in the fridge cuz I hardly ever want a beer. But then I have a beer to offer guests when they come. :-)

One friend comes to visit always has a 12 pk of Heinekin. He likes it that I don't drink them and he gets them all.

Can't stand beer, so that limits my social life...

I don't know; doesn't limit mine. I decided I didn't like beer in my early twenties, over 30 years ago. I have yet to go to a Super Bowl party or something similar where anyone cared that I made damn sure there was diet "X" in the cooler for me.

Like I said earlier, I won't eat olives either. I think they taste terrible. But I go through several pounds of tofu per month, and I don't judge folks who won't touch it harshly.

More olives for you if you like them; more tofu for me if you don't like it!

I figure anyone who doesn't like my personal preferences doesn't have to live in my skin.

olives can be rough. instead of dodging the green one...try eating a piece of pizza when you are hungry that has some smaller pieces of black olives on it knowing it is healthy for you(and you can take some off by hand if it is too much).

or you could be like my wife:D, if she doesn't eat something then she is never gonna eat it. period.

mrbatchelor, try marinating your olives in some quality gin, that seems to help quite a bit.

It's 4 pm on a Saturday here, and I've been running around and doing chores all day. Now the car keys are hung up and when I go downstairs to grab the .22 I need to clean I'm going to grab a cold beer as well. It will take awhile as .22 ammo is pretty dirty and I like to do a thorough job, so it will likely take more than one beer to finish the job.

Very strange. I thought we drank so the room would start moving. A few quotes I've used over the years:

"I pity people who don't drink, when they wake up in the morning that's the best they will feel all day!"

"There's nothing like looking at a half a bottle of liquor and thinking, that's not enough..."

"I'm like a chocoholic, but for booze!"

:D

Well tonight was a good example, I pushed for the restaurant and not a bar. We had a good time, didn't drink, heard some rowdy people at the bar getting into a heated argument and into each others face. Glad I wasn't there armed or unarmed. Figure if I was armed and intervened (had the argument escalated) I'd have to worry about being at the bar CCing, and if I wasn't armed that would li it my options.

"There's nothing like looking at a half a bottle of liquor and thinking, that's not enough..."

Ahh, yes... I remember those days when, no matter how much booze I had in the house, it was never enough. One drink was too many, and a thousand wasn't enough.

Glad to be free of that. Life is much better now, and I am much safer for other people to be around, especially where guns are concerned ;)
