Which revolver would you choose.....

K frame S&W with fixed sights...barrel length and caliber according to the job, but I'm most fond of the .38 Special out of a three-inch heavy barrel.

+1

Oh and for the record when this thread pops up again in 2007 - my answer will still be the same.
;)

Only one...

....hmmmm. Only one. That's tough.

I think it must be a 6.5" S&W Model 29, with the hottest .44's I could lay hands on.
It would be a bit heavy and difficult (not impossible) to conceal, but it would be thoroughly capably of handling most any situation I may run into. Couple of good speedloaders would be nice, too. I'm thinking shoulder holser with speedloaders on the off side? (that's how I carry my 8.5" Model 29 now).

Bacon... awesome photo of a cool gun, dude. You are rockin'!

My answer is a tough one.. depends on whether I'd have to carry it concealed or not. If home or RV defense, I'd have to say a 4" L- or N-frame, either a 581/586/681/686 or a 4" 25 or 29.

If concealed, probably a 640-1, 65 with 3" barrel, or GP-100 w/3" barrel.

This should be in the Autoloaders Forum to find out what Revolver they would carry,

Most of us here in Revolver World would already choose a revolver over a "BOTTOM FEEDIN' BRASS PUKER"

I gotta go with what would be my first choice
S&W 13 3" loaded with 158 LSWCGC or if I can get the mold a 165 LRNFPGC either one pushed right around 1100fps + or - 100fps.

If I could not have this one it would be my 4" tapered barrel Mod 65
Next will be my 9/642 with 125 golddots

Then I would go to my franken 1911.
That is with what I have.
If I lived in a dream world it would still be my 13 followed by my 65 followed by a [DREAMWORLD]313 or 365, a fantasy Scandium fixed sight K frame with a 3" mid weight barrel black anodized frame/blue steel cylinder and barrel for the 313 and matte/brushed frame/SS cylinder and barrel[/DREAMWORLD].
I would follow it with a 9/642 then a Caspian Titanium framed Commander, followed by a real USGI Colt 1911A1

Within the parameters of the original question - -

Which revolver would you choose..... as your primary defense gun if you couldn't have your favorite autoloader.
To me, "Primary defense" means concealed carry. Some wonderful revolvers are mentioned above, but many are a touch large for out-of-sight packing day in and day out.

Probably the best compromise wheel gun I own is a Model 65 S&W three-inch. Compact and light enough for regular holster carry, albeit requiring a cover garment, it is adequately powerful, and mine has an excellent DA trigger. I normally carry it loaded with four .38 SWCHP+P loads, followed by two full house magnums.

Best,
Johnny

I have to agree with Bacon. Sticking a .44 caliber hole on an L-frame was a great idea. Too bad they dropped the model, but I got my two. If only they'd made 'em in BLUE......

I've gotta agree with Bacon. The 696 fills the bill pretty well.
I don't disagree, but who can afford one. I just checked Auction Arms. They have two up for bid. Neither is meeting the reserve, and the buy price is now at $949.00 for NIB, and $699.00 for LNIB.

Shoot, I just bought this M29-2 for $525.00 and it's a keeper...

For all purpose, 3 1/2 inch S&W model 27, next to that a 2 3/4 inch Ruger Security Six. BTW Bacon, a local Shop has three more Smith revolvers almost identiacal to that only one is .41 mag and the other is .45acp for $625 each.

To my way of thinking, the term "primary defensive gun" would be a rifle or shotgun (AR-15 or Rem. 1100), but if, as someone else has commented, it means a CCW revolver, my first choice would be my S&W 640-1 in 357 Mag. For a gun that I didn't have to carry much, perhaps sitting on the nightstand or in the jockey-box of the car or tank-bag of the motorcycle, I'd choose the 8-shot 627PC. If I were going to be traveling/hiking/camping in Grizzly country, the 4" S&W 500 would be 1st choice.

Ruger blackhawk 45 convertible 5.5 inch barrel. Lots of ammo choices and the ability to hunt anything in the lower 48. If a SA isn't allowed a 4 or 6 inch S&W 29.

I've been bottom feeding for over 10 years. Recently caught the wheel gun bug.

My first revolver... right after a range session...

But certainly not my last. That 3" model 65 looks mighty tasty
