which pistol for hd/nightstand duty?

My home defense/night table guns are all Commander size 45ACP 1911's. They are also my carry guns along with a Ruger LW 1911 9mm and a 9mm Shield.

How about a CZ75B with a 15 round magazine. Round chambered but uncocked because of double action. Or any good semi-auto, Ruger or other, with same features.

I use my CZ 75B, or MK III Browning Hi Power. I have 16 round Mec Gar mags for my 75B and 15 round Mec Gar mags for my BHP.

Thanks for the thread grantman. Funny how I do somethings without much forethought, only to learn later it makes me look smarter than I am.
So my P30 has been my nightstand gun. Now I know why, larger capacitiy mag, ability to mount a light, DA/SA action. Shield 9 is my CCW....yes this I put forethought in daily, whether or how to carry. Oh, yea, that is a Mossberg 500 with the 24 in slug-barrel in the corner by the bookshelf.

I vote for the VP9. No other comments on your spending. But I will try to be smart this weekend and shop for a light to mount. :D

Why not do it right with a pistol grip short barrel shotgun? The odds you'll need it are very slim and if an intruder does arrive the shotgun will certainly do the job.

The wife and I just recently decided to arm ourselves because of many changes and reasons.

We were uncertain as to what to get or what we needed so I'd asked this question on a boating forum that I'd been a member of for many years and was given many suggestions and recommendations. From shotguns to semi-auto rifles to the 410 gauge revolvers.

I was originally looking at a Beretta Cheetah because of the higher capacity and smaller caliber as our house is closely located between two other homes. Many suggested that the 380 was too small and ineffective.

I finally came upon a nice used Taurus PT92C at a very reasonable cost.

The wife and I have discussed this subject of home defense and have concluded it this way.

1st line of defense is locked doors and motion lights outside. 2nd line is big noisy dog that alerts to unusual noises. 3rd is a cell phone next to bed. 4th is the firearm.

Should an intruder get past the lights and big dog then we need to decide whether to flight and escape or to barricade in the bedroom armed with gun and cell phone.

Anyways, that is our defense plan.

My CZ 75BD is on duty strapped to my bed post where I can reach it while laying down. No kids in the house, and it is covered by the bed sheets during the day.

Ideally, I’d use my suppressed XD45 with the STS dot sight.

But I really can’t be bothered to take it out of the safe every night, so I use my EDC, usually an XDs ,45.

I use a Colt 1991A1 (ORM) with some light customization, i.e., aluminum trigger, steel mainspring housing, fitted Wilson bushing, flat bottom firing pin retainer and wood grips.

You just need the right safe for that "Don't Wake The Baby Gun". :)

Nightstand duty

On my side I keep an XD40 Service Model with an old M3 Streamlight attached. My wife likes her old P85 in the top nightstand drawer. I keep trying to get her to upgrade but she is very familiar with the controls and handles it well, a good combination.

Regarding the use of a suppressor on a home defense pistol, I think I'd rather be deafened by the report of a 9mm fired indoors (I'm already halfway there :o) than have to explain to a jury of non-peers as to why I used a gun with a hit-man's "silencer" attached to it to fell an intruder. It may not be fair but that's the way it sometimes is.

You explain that you wanted to be able to hear police and medical response arriving after the shooting. I get what you're saying but if everything we do is based on the court of public opinion than we likely wouldn't even own a gun. Me I keep a spare pair of electronic muffs next to the bed. If I get to them great, if not they're not hindering me in any way.

Grantman, I don't know where you're from, but if you are in a clime that experiences harsh weather conditions that cause blackouts - maybe for days - you want to make sure you've got a reliable source of light that goes along with that gun. And, guess what?, burglars and home invasion guys like to cut phone and power lines.
