With ammo price and availability, the versatility of shooting the mildest of 38`s to the fullhouse 357 load... My pick 357.

I noticed you left out the number one selling caliber in the US and World. I like the 357 mag myself but the only caliber that is reconnized as the all around is the 22LR. It out sells everything else about 1000 to 1.

Great survival round will kill anything from a squarel to small wolf. Can be shot all day long without having to take a second mortgage on the house, is easy to carry (lots of rounds, try that with 357) and has sold more firearms (including handguns) that any other caliber with the possible exception of the 9mm.

AE50. You can do anything with it that can be done with a handgun. Me? I don't want the thing!

But I don't want the most "versatile" handgun either. I chose my tools by what I really want each one to do, not by how broadly they can be used.

I would have to say .44 mag, really mild loads to really really hot loads in many different weight and bullet types can be used to fill a huge variety of roles. The .357 mag wouldnt be a horrible choice either.

.357

I only need to reload one caliber and can have ammo that will work in my 15oz 5 shot pocket revolver, 25oz 5 shot belt revolver, 4" 6 shot woods revolver, and 18.5" levergun (out of which it will match 30-30 energy levels and get into the low end of .35 Remington). I can do 148gr wadcutter loads that use a miserly 3 grains or so of powder, or 200gr bullets with 13 grains of powder. The .44 is versatile too but requires twice as much lead and powder. The .357 does it all well and really economizes on lead and powder. It's become my absolutely favorite round.
